Introduction
I am a lucky man. As an interior designer it’s been my pleasure to meet many wonderful people; my clients. My role has often been that of teacher, providing these clients with the basic tools of interior design while helping to instill in them a sense of confidence in their own taste. Hopefully this ebook will give you, whether you are moving into a new residence or redecorating your present one, some small bits of information to assist you along your way. Perhaps it will pique your interest in interior design. Perhaps it will lead you to more scholarly works on the subject. Perhaps it will shut your computer down completely. Who knew?
In any case, interior design is a delightful process full of beauty and grace.
As I said, I’m a lucky man.

Unfortunately, you are not a well person. You suffer from a chronic, progressive illness undiagnosed by the psychological profession. The disease is insidious. It envelopes the afflicted in a web of confusion, doubt and despair often leading to emotional and, quite possibly, financial ruin. You are a DECORATIVELY CHALLENGED INDIVIDUAL, incapable of making even the slightest design decision regarding your homes’ interior without failing miserably. It’s been like this for years, hasn’t it? Its okay you can talk to me. You’ve done everything. Bought all the right magazines, spent untold hours pouring over wallpaper books, squinted at fabrics until your are blind, searched endlessly for the perfect end table. But it’s no use. Even though you try to hide it, try not to think about it. You know. This is nothing to feel ashamed about. There are many like sufferers all over the country. People who dread the thought of visitors rolling on the floor of their home, laughing and pointing. People who live in seeming time capsules exactly reproducing long dead fashions from 1967. People whose pets make better design decisions…

Having come to terms with your affliction, let’s examine its root causes.
Ever wondered why your neighbor’s house looks like it belongs on the cover of Architectural Digest while yours looks like a National Geographic photo essay on the Slums of Bangkok?
It’s because your neighbor possesses something
