Graduation from New York University led to a career in education. An M.A., supported by graduate work (Hofstra), and a doctoral program (CUNY), concluded my formal education. Old books, museums and musty libraries fascinated me. I wanted to bring my findings to life.I discovered a path to the past through living history. While a 12-year member of the Brigade of the American Revolution (1975-1986), I recreated el Regimiento de la Luisiana, which became a practical basis for writing.During the American Bicentennial, my group demonstrated from Canada to Florida. As reenactment-commander, I accepted the surrender of British colors at San Augustine. During my tenure, I participated in instructional exercises on the life and times of common Revolutionary War soldiers at the U.S. Military Academy. I received the prestigious Sons of the American Revolution medal. Research on the Bourbon Family’s role in the Americas triggered travels in Latin America, and Europe.I joined the Kingdom of Spain’s cultural effort to publicize its role during the American Revolution; participated in PBS and; Hollywood films (Sweet Liberty); and worked successfully for the issuance of a Bernardo de Gálvez Stamp. In Arizona, after horseback riding on the Gila River, where de Gálvez ventured, my ‘sketches’ twisted—nonfiction became historical fiction; then came the Journalist of the Magdalena Series, a saga of a family challenged with political upheavals, a border war, and drug expansion as they pioneer aviation. Why fiction? “Fiction, when presented with well-defined characters and plots, best pulls another time from dormant dusty pages and drawings.”Memberships included: Arizona Author’s, Company of Military Historians, Hispanic Society of America, NRA, Romance Writers of America, and Southwest Valley Writers.Past-time: rainforest travelsAuthors: Jeff Shaara, John Jakes, Thomas Fleming, Gary JenningsNext novel: The Eagles of the Sierra Madre

The cost to be a uniformed soldier—1980

In 1980 dollars, the following were the expenses: el Recluta—recruit $180 (no musket, regimental or bayonet); el Fusilero—infantry $316; el Granadero—grenadier $462; el Piquero—pikeman $127.

Note: a musket & bayonet was less than $200! La Luisiana of the Bicentennial used the 1752 Fusil musket.

    The Military Drill

The manual of arms of the Spanish infantry was derived from Las Ordenanzas de S. M. para el Regimen, Disciplina, Subordinacion, y Servicio de Sus Exercitos. The commands number twenty-seven and are found in Volume I, part IV, Title IX; pages 381-397 and were first published in 1768.⁷⁵ At least one English translation was made in 1977.⁷⁶

    Reenactors’ Note:

A separate bilingual version, which can be used in the field, complete with black and white authentic illustrations, can be obtained from the author. This 4-volume publication marks the 240th anniversary of the military work.

The manual used by the Bicentennial la Luisiana was not purchased as a single work from a bookstore. It was found after a year’s search through four countries. The translation was that of the author, using his knowledge and experience of three other manuals—British, American, and French, as well as considerable consultation with those proficient with the period Germanic military drill movements.

La Luisiana first used the drill in 1979, and then went on to use it continually as a group until 1986. Suggestion: Print out the drill for field work, and refer to it at every occasion, until it becomes automatic. Provide a copy of the simplified pages of the commands, both those in English and Spanish.

    Loading muskets for speed:

The Prussians improved with a speedy and precise loading drill that could fire about twice as fast as those of other armies could. Therefore, the unit should practice a great deal.

    Musicians

La Luisiana used musicians in the usual military fashion of the day. Their uniforms tended to be more decorative than the enlisted men.⁷⁷ The regimental musicians had a uniform with lace trim around the edges of the collar, cuffs, pocket flaps, front of
