Seventeen Years Ago
Dried leaves crunched and twigs snapped under Dakota Harper’s six-year-old feet. She ran the wrong way through the woods, the house no longer visible through the trees.
Deep orange beams of fading sunlight reached through the naked branches as they drowned in the oncoming darkness.
The moon, already high in the darkening sky, was a thick yellow crescent laughing at the dying sun.
Dakota’s breath burned her dry throat. Behind her, she heard Mommy calling for her, but just barely. The wind was so strong and the tall, almost leafless trees creaked and groaned as they swayed.
And her attention was mostly on Robin. He was there, leading her deeper into the woods, the sunlight becoming fainter, bathing everything in an eerie red-orange glow.
Dakota felt like she had never seen him so clearly before. Was he her imaginary friend or was he really there, really telling her to follow him to meet his friends?
The cold November air reddened her cheeks and made her fingers hurt. Her feet were cold and the strong wind didn’t seem slowed at all by her light jacket.
She should be home, at the dinner table with Mommy and Daddy. But Robin had told her of his friends, the Fairies, and said she could meet them. He said they liked to play Make Believe like they did.
He said they were dying to meet her.
