Disclaimer for kids and parents: While Reiki is a wonderful addition to any spiritual path, and can bring a lot of calm, relief from pain, and healing, this book isn’t and shouldn’t be taken as medical advice. Reiki works best as a supplement to whatever measures you’re taking for your own health, and not as a replacement for them. Do all the things you need to stay healthy; including following a healthy diet; exercising regularly; performing your everyday hygiene routine; checking in with doctors, dentists, and psychologists; taking any medication as directed; and following any medical advice you’re given by trained medical professionals. No alternative health method can replace these things – not even Reiki. Use common sense.

Chapter 1: Introduction and history
Reiki (pronounced RAY-key) is a kind of invisible energy. Its name means ghost energy
in Japanese, which might seem kind of silly, but this just means that it’s invisible and mysterious. Its name doesn’t translate well, so we don’t even try, and call it Reiki!
Some people say that Reiki
means universal life energy.
It doesn’t quite mean that – and English-speaking people probably started saying it means this because the real meaning, ghost energy,
sounds like a strange thing. Yet, universal life energy
is a really good description, in plain English, of what Reiki is.
You may know something about some theories that say that there’s energy all around us. Here we don’t mean energy like electricity or light or heat, but a more subtle, hidden kind of energy, that’s kind of like life itself. If you’ve seen the Star Wars movies, you can think of it as being kind of like the Force. This energy is a kind that we can’t measure with scientific instruments (yet). It moves like water in eddies and flows. It’s possible for there to be a whole lot in one place, or not enough in one place. It moves around on its own, but we can also move it ourselves, if we focus and use certain techniques.
Everything has this energy in it, but sometimes you might have more of it than at other times. When you are full of energy, you might feel rested, happy, calm, creative, healthy, confident, and any of a number of other good
things. If you’re low on energy, you might feel grouchy, sick, tired (even if you’ve slept well), sad, hungry (even if you’ve eaten), anxious, in pain, or any of a number of other bad
things. People absorb energy all day long without thinking about it, just by being part of the world. We use it to power our bodies and heal ourselves and stay alive. We return what we haven’t used, or what we’ve transformed, into the world.
In a perfect life where everything was wonderful, you’d be completely full of energy all of the time; you would be happy, healthy, rested, and calm. But that’s just not the case. Germs pick away at our immune system and stress our bodies out, lowering our energy. You might skin your knee, so your body has to deal with the stress of repairing skin and dealing with the pain signals our brains are getting from our nerves. You might get a bad grade at school, which makes you sad or nervous. You might have a fight with a friend. You might skip a meal. Being full of energy won’t stop any of these things from happening. If you are full of energy, you will still make mistakes and have accidents, and you will probably even feel bad or sad sometimes. Because being full of energy feels so good, it makes us strong enough and happy enough to deal with problems as they come up. So it’s better to be full of energy so you can face the world and feel as well as you can!
You can think of Reiki as being a particular kind of this life energy that’s all around us. Energy in general can be used for anything, so it’s not good or bad. But Reiki is one of the gentlest, most loving, most healing kinds of energy around, and it exists entirely for healing and for promoting peace and calm. It’s nearly impossible to hurt somebody with it, even if you try. Because it’s so safe and helpful, and because people offer step-by-step instruction in it, working with Reiki is a great introduction to working with energy in general.
Reiki is all around you, and once you know how to work with it, it moves through you. It comes down through the top of your head, through an invisible place called your crown chakra. We’ll talk more about your chakras in the appendix, where we go over the Reiki hand positions. You don’t even have to think about this process; it just happens when you know how to work with Reiki. It moves out through your hands, although you can also move it with your eyes and your breath.
You may have heard of laying on of hands,
like in the Bible, or in some other stories. That’s where you put your hands on someone and concentrate, and that way you heal someone from an injury or an illness. Some people say that it’s a kind of miracle, it is definitely a powerful, wonderful thing. Most Reiki practitioners would disagree with you, and say that healing somebody with your hands alone is actually not hard at all or miraculous. Instead, it’s an everyday thing! This is because Reiki is a kind of laying on of hands.
