    Chapter 1

March 11, 2014, Roger, a twenty one year old man who grew up in the country, was packing his truck with his things to return home for his spring break from his third year at college. Tina, his twenty one year old girlfriend, was an attractive woman who was in her third year attending the same college as Roger. Unlike Roger, she was a city girl who grew up with a wealthy family and never wanted for anything. They were the unusual couple on campus, with very different upbringing.

Do you really want to go and meet my mom? Roger asked as he loaded some of Tina’s bags into the back of the truck.

Yes, of course I do, I want to get to know your mom. I only wish I could have met your dad. Tina replied.

He was a good man, he taught me how to live off the land, and he always had us boys out shooting, his philosophy was that he thought we needed to know how to survive in case there was a nuclear war. Roger said as he chuckled.

He wanted to make sure that his boys could make it on their own if they had too. I think that was very fore-sighted.

Yeah well, everyone in town thought that he was the crazy prepper guy!

Crazy prepper guy, what do you mean?

He was always saving everything and stockpiling food and ammo, just in case the big bombs dropped.

I don’t think that we can be too prepared, that was probably smart on his part.

Yeah, well mom didn’t like it that he spent so much money on stupid things like that. She figured if there ever was a nuclear war we would all be dead anyway so it was a waste of time and money.

He was his own man, and he didn’t care what others thought. I like that in a person, someone who can be who he is and not worry about what others thought.

Well, everyone thought that he was crazy.

I think you are a very different from other men, that is why I fell in love with you. You didn’t care that my family has money, you wanted me for who I am and you didn’t care about the money.

I love you because you are you and you don’t think your better than everyone else because of the money.

See Roger, we are perfect for each other.

I think so too, do you have everything?

    Yes.

Alright jump in so we can get going. Roger said as he opened the truck door for Tina.

Thank you, see you are such a gentleman.

I know! Roger replied as he goosed Tina as she climbed into the truck.

They then left the campus and headed to Roger’s mom’s house, where he grew up, a couple hours away. As they headed to the house, they talked about everything, and Tina was asking many more questions about his family, and they were just having a good drive, when they heard news stories on the radio about the conflict going on between Syria and Israel, and that tensions were building between Japan and China over a couple deserted islands off their coasts.

I think that the Israelies are right in bombing the groups bringing weapons through Syria. Tina remarked.

I don’t really care about what they are doing over seas. We have nothing to do with it, and when you get down to it, it don’t matter what us citizens say anyways, the dumb-ass President thinks he is our dictator and he will do whatever he wants. Roger replied.

Well right is right and wrong is wrong, the Hezbollah shoot missiles into Israel and then when Israel shoots back they just want to whine about being picked on. I think someone should shut them up. They pick a fight then when they gets their asses handed to them and all they can do is cry to the world.

Sounds like a lot of people in this country, bunch of cry baby dumb-asses! Roger quipped.

Like that chubby little penguin that rules North Korea, he is just like a fat baby that is throwing a fit so that someone in this world will pay some attention to him. He threatens us with nuclear missiles, but if it really came to blows, he would only last one round then he and his whole country would be nothing but a memory. Tina added.

Alright, we are almost there, you sure you want to meet my mom?

Would you stop it! Tina said as she lightly slapped Roger across the arm.

Tina watched as they pulled off the blacktop road onto a dirt road. They drove down this long dirt road that twisted and turned through the timber. Tina looked around but all she could see was all of the bushes and trees that lined both sides of the road, and they were so thick that ahead of them the road just seemed to disappear into the trees with no ending.

You really do live out in the sticks! Tina said.

I told you I was raised in the country. Roger replied.

I know, but I guess I was expecting to see like corn fields and a tractor sitting in the yard. You know the normal picture you get when you think about country living.

Yeah, well we don’t have any tractors, when my dad was alive he was a pig farmer.

I remember you telling me that, I don’t know, I just have that image of tractors when I think of farming.

Yeah, I grew up smelling the hogs. But dad died and we sold off the pigs. Dad made sure that he had plenty of life insurance so mom would never need to work when he died.

Sounds like your father was a very intelligent man who loved his wife and wanted to make sure that his family would be well off when he died.

He was a good man. Roger said with a soft voice.

Tina looked around, as the dirt road lead to a dirt drive way, then Roger pulled up the drive, and she could see coming into view a quaint little ranch style house, sitting out in an open meadow amongst all of the trees. She could see the house, and several out buildings around the perimeter of the meadow.

Oh this is a beautiful place Roger! Tina told Roger as she reached over and cradled his arm.

    It’s home! Roger responded.

They pulled into the drive and Roger helped Tina get their things out of the back of the truck, and as they walked up to the front of the house, Roger’s mom, Dianne, stepped out of the house and greeted them.

Oh it’s good to see my boy home! Dianne said as she walked up to him and squeezed his face and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

    Hi mom.

And this must be Tina, Roger has told me so much about you. It is wonderful to finally be able to meet the woman who could win my boys’ heart. Dianne said as she reached over and gave Tina a big hug and kiss on the cheek.

It is my pleasure to finally be able to meet you, I have wanted to meet you for some time now, and it is great to finally have the chance to come here with Roger and be able to spend time with you. Tina told her.

Oh honey you are always welcome here, our home is your home, you come here as often as you like, you have an open invitation.

Thank you so much! Tina replied with a big smile.

Alright mom, it was a long drive can we just get inside, I need to raid the refrigerator.

Oh no you don’t boy, you will wait until supper, I don’t want you to ruin your appetite. Besides the chicken is almost done, I hope you like fried chicken dear. Dianne said as she turned to Tina.

I have never had home fried chicken, the only fried chicken I have ever had was at restaurants.

Oh honey, that is not good for you, but don’t you worry I have plenty so you will be able to fill your stomach. Dianne said as she followed them into the house.

Roger got his things and settled back into his old bedroom, and knowing his mom would never approve of them staying in the same room unmarried, Tina got settled into Roger’s brothers’ old room.

After getting settled in, they all three sat at the kitchen table and enjoyed a good home cooked meal of fried chicken and home mashed potatoes and butter. They all had an enjoyable supper, and they had good conversation as Tina and Dianne got to know each other better, and of course there were the stories told by Dianne about Roger that got him to blush several times.

After supper, Roger headed out to fix the back yard gate that had broken while Tina stayed inside to help Dianne with the supper dishes and clean up. They talked more and got to know more about each other, and Dianne was sure to tell her all of the secrets about Roger.

While Roger was out in the yard fixing the fence, his attention was diverted when he saw the flash of headlights coming up the drive. He went over to meet whomever it was that was pulling up. When he got to the drive he could see that it was the truck of his long time friend, and neighbor Cody.

Oh man ain’t it good to see you! How long are you back for? Cody asked as he jumped out of his truck and ran over to give Roger a hug.

We are back home here for a week, it is our break. Roger told him.

We, what is this we stuff? Who is we? Cody asked.

    Me and Tina. Roger said.

Tina? Oh you mean that fantasy girl of yours, the one you say is your girlfriend, but you never seem to be able to bring her home. Cody said as he laughed and joked with Roger.

Yeah, but this time she was able to come home with me, she is inside now helping mom with the supper dishes.

For real? You mean you actually brought some girl home to this place way out here in the sticks!

This is my home, why would I not bring some girl here to meet my mom?

Well I just figured you went and got all city-fied and you would not want to come back to the country.

Nah, this is home and always will be no matter where I end up living. Roger said to help ease Cody’s feelings about him leaving.

Well are we going to go hang with the guys or what? Cody asked as he was ready to do do some beer drinking.

No, I just want to hang out here tonight, you know, sit around on the porch and just relax.

What has that girl gone and done to you? Cody asked with disappointment.

It’s not her, I just want to relax for a night. Roger replied.

Well alright, I just happen to have a couple cases of beer in the back of the truck!

Alright well, let’s crack a few open, come on over and sit on the porch for a bit. Roger said as he motioned for Cody to head on over to the porch.

Cody grabbed a twelve pack from the back of his truck, and went to sit down on the porch and drink a few with Roger. As they were sitting down to have a few, Tina stepped out onto the porch to see what was going on and who may have pulled into the drive.

Well hello there ma’am! Cody said as he stood up to greet her.

Hello, you must be Cody? Tina inquired.

Yes, how do you know me?

Roger has told me a lot about you, and you look just as he described.

I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

Roger has nothing but good things to say about you, it is obvious from how he talks about you that you are his best friend.

Yes, I am the best friend anyone could have. Cody joked as he slapped Roger on the back."

Cody this is Tina, Tina this is Cody. Roger said trying to be polite.

It is very nice to finally meet you.

Why thank you, and you are just as beautiful as Roger said you are.

    Awe, thank you.

Here have a beer. Cody said as he handed Tina a beer from his cooler.

    Thanks.

Don’t let him fool you, his is one of the most ornery guys in the county. Dianne said as she stepped out onto the porch to join everyone.

Good evening ma’am. Cody said as he stood up and tipped his hat to Dianne.

    "Hello Cody, how are
