The sea captain also died before Mary was born. Some records show that he died so long before Mary was born that he might not have been her father.
Mary's grandmother lived in England. She had expected great things of Mary's older brother. When he died, she was very sad. Mary's mother was afraid that her mother-in-law would not help to support her or leave any inheritance to a girl. So when Mary was born,
