    Foreword

Welcome to the wonderful world of bioidentical hormones. We are truly blessed to live in the information era created by the Internet, a time where endless information is literally available at your fingertips. This amazing technology presents an incredible opportunity for empowering open-minded people to the possibilities for optimizing their health: gone is the paternalistic medical model where you depend solely on your physician or other healthcare providers to provide you the information they believe you need and then allowing them to make your healthcare decisions for you; arrived is today’s model that allows you to seek your own information and work in collaboration with your healthcare providers to obtain the excellent health and quality of life you deserve.

However, with this freedom comes the need for caution and responsibility. The Internet and self-publishing industries create opportunities for charlatans to enrich themselves at your expense. They parade as self-anointed experts, but spout false doctrine. We urge you to exercise great care when seeking and obtaining hormone-related health and other medical information because misinformation is everywhere: on the Internet, television, radio, and other advertising mediums.

The goal of this book is to provide you a simple and easy to understand guide to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, the medical conditions for which they are used, and they ways they can be used to help you achieve your health and wellness goals. Meet The Clockers Part 1: Charles

Charles Clocker is a 44 year-old male salesman at Acme Agricultural Supply in a small town in rural Indiana. He and his wife, Cindy Clocker, have been married for twenty-two years and have two children, an aging hunting dog named Rascal, and ten years remaining on the mortgage of their suburban home.

However, while all may appear rosy on the outside, things are not as they seem. Sadly, the Clocker’s dog, Rascal, is depressed. Why? Because her lord and master—the aforementioned Mr. Clocker—has seemingly forgotten her. He no longer takes her on the daily walks they once enjoyed and he has skipped the last two hunting seasons, choosing instead to sit on the couch and watch football games while drinking a slowly escalating amount of beer. Rascal is deep in the throes of despair because her reasons for rising from her LL Bean doggy bed every day are gone. Why is this? She racks her canine brain, but cannot think of what she did to cause her best friend, Charles, to abandon her.

The answer, dear Rascal, is hormones—specifically lack thereof—and you can rest assured it has nothing to do with you. Charles is suffering from hormone imbalance and it is not only affecting Rascal’s life; it is having serious effects on the rest of the family—potentially serious effects that could destroy the Clocker family.

Fortunately, Rascal isn’t the only member of the Clocker family to have noticed Charles’ behavior changes. Three months ago, after Charles’ wife, Cindy Clocker, held a clandestine evening meeting in the garage with the Clocker children, the decision was made to confront Charles and get to the bottom of the situation. The following discussion occurred the next morning at the breakfast table.

Cindy (Cheerily.): Good morning, dear. How are you feeling this morning? I made your favorite: bacon, eggs and toast with freshly squeezed orange juice.

Charles (Appearing grumpy and distracted): Mmmm. Thanks.

Chester (12 year-old son): "Any big plans at work today, Dad? Making any big presentations? Hey—two Fridays from now is Show Off Your Parent Day at school. I want to bring you. Can you come?"

Charles (Mumbling, avoiding eye contact with son and rest of family.): I don’t know, C. I’ve got lots going on at work right now. Why don’t you take your mom? She’s much more interesting than me. I’m just another salesman; there’s nothing special about me.

Charlotte (10 year-old daughter, emotional and barely restraining tears): Daddy, you know that’s not true! Why would you say such a thing? You and what you do are very interesting and important. I think it’s mean that you won’t let Chester show you off! I—

Cindy cuts off the now sobbing Charlotte: Charles. (No response, so raises voice). Charles! Please look at me!

    Charles raises his head wearily.

Cindy: Charles, the children and I are worried about you. Something’s not right, and we need to figure out what it is. I hope this doesn’t upset you, but I made an appointment for you with Dr. Anderson at 10:00 this morning. I called your work and told them you were sick and wouldn’t be coming in today.

    Charles (Plaintive): But—

Cindy (Caring, but assertive): "No ‘buts’, Charles. Whatever this is, it has gone on long enough!
