    Introduction: Why I love Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire

    She lived a wild life. She broke her vows. She broke the rules. She spent too much money. To the outside world, she seemed all about glamour and selfishness. Yet, she had a profound influence on the world around her. And, in the end, she left a legacy of love and connection among all the children of her household.

    When I first read Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman, Georgiana became the focus of my universe for a time. I would tell my family about the interesting and juicy details of Georgiana’s life.

    While my life and Georgiana’s life are very different, many of the dilemmas which Foreman wrote about resonated for me, anyway. For instance, I empathized with Georgiana’s hopes to become pregnant. And, I admired her determination to live life to the fullest, and make an impact on the world, even while she waited for the happy event. I also enjoyed Foreman’s insights into the complexities of the mother-daughter relationship. Like many mothers, Georgiana’s mother did not always give great advice, and sometimes found it difficult to understand and/or approve of her daughter’s lifestyle.

    I can’t help but think: What if Georgiana’s mother had steered her in a more empowered direction? What if women were allowed to inherit titles and property, so that Georgiana’s husband would have been as happy as she was with the birth of his daughters? What if, when the Whig Party realized that Georgiana was a million times better and more interested in
