Foreword
I was 18 years of age in the long hot summer of ‘77 and I’d just acquired my first FAL Disco twin deck with twin speakers and lights. The whole package was £200, a fortune in those days but I thought of it as an investment in my future although I had no idea where that first purchase would take me. I just loved disco music and any thought of being a radio presenter was some way off.
It was three years later before that broadcasting dream came to fruition with a stint at BBC Radio Carlisle, as it was once known. I soon realised that all the hours I had spent behind those sweaty disco desks counted for nothing. In a radio studio, everything was so very different. There was no audience to see; just an empty room, a mic and a few records and I struggled to come up with things to say. This was bad because radio is simply a communications business and to stand a chance in this world, I had to learn how to do this and fast. More than anything, I needed to know how this all worked.
Like all great art a new skill takes time to master but some are also lucky enough to have a great teacher. If you can find one that is kind enough to spend time teaching you then ropes, structures, preparation and planning so much the better. Not everyone had this.
I was lucky in that I had good ‘ears’. The very best radio talent not only know what to do they also know the mechanics of it all. They have spent time listening to themselves but also to others right across the spectrum of radio. I was always fascinated by phraseology and structure, but more than anything I wanted to learn the art of preparation. I soon noticed that those presenters that prepared well, very often performed at a far higher level than their competitors and that is still the same today.
Although individuality is the golden key to success you can do nothing if you don’t know the rules first. Consider it your driving test for radio. If you read this book carefully and take on board it's many valid and careful suggestions from vastly experienced hands, you can pass your basic radio test with ease.
Digest its contents and you will be ready to take radio forward in your own style and in your own way. It is a radio bible of sorts. It is the kind of shortcut I wish I had when I first set off on this journey. Believe me, there is no shortcut to success in a medium where the art of communication is vital. You have to learn the basic skills first and this wonderful book will help you get there and a lot faster than I did. If you mix this information with a love of the medium alongside your own individuality, you won’t go far wrong.

Take the movie business for example. Many will tell you that it exists only to make money. Much to the frustration of passionate movie buffs, fewer and fewer movies, especially in Hollywood, are made today in the name of art
and many more are made
