The 101 Best Christmas Songs - Steve Akley

    Preface

Starting approximately November 1 every year, Christmas music begins to appear in our lives. On the radio, in the grocery store, and on TV commercials, we start to hear those familiar tunes. The songs themselves can often bring their own unique set of memories. Whether it’s a favorite childhood activity, like baking cookies while Mom plays her stack of holiday favorites, or perhaps the memories of a scene from a holiday movie where a song sets the stage for Christmas cheer, these songs can represent powerful imagery.

There are several factors which make Christmas music so unique. It’s timeless. If you play the popular songs or top hits from any given year, they literally become time stamped. It doesn’t diminish the relevance or how great an individual song is, but there is a feel to music by the decades. That point is clear whether you are speaking of the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70’s, 80s, 90s or 00s. This doesn’t happen with Christmas music. The perfect song, by the perfect artist, sounds as fresh and new as anyone trying to recreate it decades later. There are no oldies with Christmas music.

Another great differentiator between Christmas songs and other types of music is the impact it has on an individual’s demeanor. While there may be factors which counteract this phenomenon, for the most part, Christmas music brings about a good mood in individuals. A dance song may elicit a call to get up and move. A ballad may make you feel all squishy inside about a love interest. A Christmas song just puts you in a happy mood. How many times have you been out Christmas shopping, stretching your credit limit to the max but have been as happy as could be as you were singing along in your head with a Christmas tune playing at the mall? That’s pretty powerful.

The final component to consider about Christmas music is simply that it’s magic. Christmas is a special time of the year where we spend time with loved ones, reflect on those we’ve lost in our lives and do good things for our friends, family and in many cases total strangers. Christmas music is very much a part of these activities. If you don’t believe me, think about this: for all of the compelling reasoning I’ve made about how special Christmas music is, put on a Christmas song in July. It just
