One Afternoon at the Cousins’ House

It was now the summer before second grade. I had already left first grade behind me. We dropped in at the cousins’ house one day, just for a quick visit. We piled out of the car and went inside. Something was going on in there. All of the adults and most of the kids were down the hall in front of the bathroom door. They were fiddling around with the doorknob, and they didn’t seem to be able to get in. It seems that my cousin Earl, only three years old, had somehow locked himself in there.

How did he lock the door? my mother asked.

We have no idea, Aunt Lorna said, laughing. Lorna was my mom’s sister.

He’s got the key in there with him, said Uncle Harry. Harry was Lorna’s husband.

It’s an old skeleton key, Lorna said, and it’s the only one we have.

This scared me. What was a skeleton key? I tried to picture it in my mind, but nothing seemed to make sense. I imagined a skeleton walking down a darkened hallway, key in hand, happy and willing to open the bathroom door. Then I pictured a key made of skeleton bones, with the fingers of its hand reaching out to unlatch the lock. Whatever a skeleton key was, it kind of gave me the chills, and I tried not to think about it. I went outside and played with my cousins for awhile. The sun was shining but dark clouds were beginning to gather. They didn’t bother us. We went out to the barn and played cowboys and Indians, and we were having a good time.

David? David! My mom was yelling at me so I ran back towards the house.

David, we need your help, mom said. We need you to help get Earl out of the bathroom.

How can I help? I asked. I was a little bit nervous. I wanted nothing to do with any old skeleton key.

There’s a window above the bathtub, Uncle Harry said, and we want you to crawl in there. You’re small enough to get through the window, but you’re big enough to open the lock. Do you think you can help? Harry asked. He smiled and I nodded. We went around to the back of the house where I saw that they already had the window pushed open, and there was a stepladder pushed up against it. I climbed to the top of the ladder and poked my head through. Earl was sitting on the floor in the middle of the bathroom. He seemed as happy as a lark.

Hi David, he said. He seemed excited to see me. I looked around, wondering how I could get in there without falling headfirst into the bathtub.

David, come back out here, Uncle Harry said. I backed out, wondering what he wanted.

Give me your hands, he said. We’ll poke you in there feet first. I’ll ease you down as far as I can reach, and then drop you into the tub. It will be just a short drop. Do you think you can do that? I nodded. I seemed to have little choice in the matter.

He popped me through the window and slowly lowered me down. Outside the window, thunder boomed.

Even though I knew he was going to drop me, I still landed hard. I hit my head on the side of the tub and it hurt. Earl laughed. I sat in the tub and rubbed my head, and then I climbed out and plucked the key from Earl’s hand. It was a pretty ordinary key really, and I still had no idea why it was called a skeleton key. I opened the door and, much to my surprise, everyone ignored me. They just
