    Conclusion

    Introduction

Eczema, also called atopic dermatitis, is probably the most common skin disease. There are several variants to the disease, such as contact dermatitis, caused by contact with an allergen, dyshydrotic eczema, caused by exposure to water and seborrheic dermatitis, caused by oils in the skin. Eczema can affect everyone from babies to old people. Fifteen million people will suffer from eczema at sometime in their lives and ten percent of them are infants or young children.

Eczema is like an allergy; in effect, it is a hypersensitivity reaction to some type of allergen. Some researcher surmise that those who suffer from eczema are missing essential proteins that, when absent, make the skin more sensitive.

Eczema is related to people who have asthma and seasonal allergies. People who get eczema often have a family history of this condition as well as of asthma and seasonal allergies.

Things that relate to getting eczema include the following:

    • Flu

    • Colds

    • Dry winter air

    • Allergies to just about anything

    • Stressful emotions

    • Excessive exposure to water

    • Irritant or chemical exposure

    • Temperature fluctuations

    • Dyes or fragrances to beauty products

What are some common symptoms you might have with eczema? The skin may be dry or bumpy, especially on the backs of the arms and the fronts of the thighs. Blisters can show up that ooze and crust over. There can be itchiness of the skin along with redness or thick areas of the skin after having the condition for a long time.

Eczema involves different body areas. In kids under the age of 2, the rash of eczema is seen on the scalp, the face, the hands and the feet. In older kids and adults, common areas of eczema include the inside aspect of the knees and elbows. Severe outbreaks can involve rashes anyplace on the body.

Doctors can usually tell whether or not you have eczema just by looking at your skin and by asking you about your personal and family history. Sometimes allergy skin testing is necessary to make sure you
