    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    PREFACE

Shortly after I created my first writing help website back in 2001 I discovered that one of the most requested topics for which visitors to my site were seeking information and assistance was on the subject of how to write a recommendation letter. To tell the truth, at the time, I wasn’t sure exactly what people were referring to when they used that recommendation letter term. That’s because my experience up until then had shown me that there were a number of different types of so-called recommendation letters, each one used for a very different purpose. So, I wasn’t sure which one(s) they were looking for.

As a result, I made it my business back then to spend the next few months researching the entire subject of recommendation letters, in the broadest sense. As suspected, my research revealed that there were indeed a number of different purpose-specific letters that could be broadly grouped into the category of recommendation letters. Probably the most well known of these are letters of recommendation for admission to college or university programs, both at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

Nevertheless, my detailed research also revealed that, in addition to the college admission related letters, there are a number of other recommendation-type letters that are completely unrelated to college and university admission. Even today, more than half of the millions of recommendation letter visitors to my various writing help websites are seeking help with recommendation letters that are NOT related to college or university admission.

In fact, of the half dozen types of recommendation letters that I discovered people search for, the most sought after is information on how to write character reference letters. My research also revealed that there were only one or two books available on the subject of how to write recommendation letters, and both of those were totally focused on letters related to college or university admission. So there was definitely an information gap.

That’s what inspired me to write what has become my perennial best selling how-to book since 2002: Instant Recommendation Letter Kit – How To Write Winning Letters of Recommendation. Since that original version, I have produced three Revised Editions of that book; in 2005, 2008 and 2012. The primary feature that makes that book unique is that it addresses ALL types of recommendation letters, not just those for college admission. Another unique feature is that it also provides users with almost 80 fully-formatted real-life templates of actual letters of recommendation for the various situations that require such letters. (Buyers of that book also get access to the letter templates in a downloadable MS-Word file that they can work with). As far as I know, Instant Recommendation Letter Kit continues to be the number one resource on planet Earth that offers tips, advice, information and fully formatted real-life templates for the writing of ALL types of recommendation and reference letters.

Unfortunately, due to the layout and presentation limitations of e-books such as this one, that need to be formatted specifically for reading on hand-held e-book readers such as amazon.com’s Kindle and the like, it is impossible for me to include fully-formatted real-life templates, such as I have with the above-mentioned book.

However, what I have done with this e-book that you are reading right now is almost as good! I have taken all of the how-to tips, tricks, info and advice from my original best-seller Instant Recommendation Letter Kit, and I have included all of that info here. In addition, wherever possible, I have included in-context hyperlinks that will take you to actual real-life samples of those letters on the World Wide Web. The full URLs have been provided so that if you are reading this e-book while connected online you will be able to link directly to the various templates. Or, if you are reading this while not connected to the Internet, you still have the entire URL listed here so that you can enter it into your Web browser via your keyboard later on, whenever you have online access. In addition, I have revised and updated the content throughout this e-book to make it as current as possible.

Similar to its hard copy forerunner, I expect that this digital e-book, How To Write Recommendation Letters, will soon become the number one e-resource for writing ALL types of recommendation letters on planet Earth. Please feel free to e-mail me with any comments or questions at shaun@writinghelptools.com.

    INTRODUCTION

    eBook Edition Notes

As mentioned in the Preface, the content of this e-book is based on my longtime best seller, Instant Recommendation Letter Kit that was first published as both an e-book and a paperback back in 2002; followed by revised editions in 2005, 2008 and 2012. The core content of this e-book that you are now reading is based on that last edition.

Sales of both the book and e-book have been excellent since their initial release. In fact, that title quickly became my best selling how-to book, and remains so until today. Again, as far as I know, it is still the ONLY book/e-book in existence that deals with writing ALL types of recommendation letters.

A few websites do offer specialized types of recommendation letters. However, these are essentially of the one size fits all copy-and-paste variety. No other book/e-book that I know of deals with them ALL: job/employment, college/university admission, character reference, community service, and performance evaluation.

All of the earlier versions contained the same core how-to content; the major
