Let's Get Organized! - Cathy C. Schrack
Introduction
Have you ever really looked at all the clutter around you? Chances are, if you are like most people, you just let your eyes skim right over all those messy piles of junk you have put off dealing with. Clutter happens because you have not yet developed the habit of organizing. It’s as simple as that. So the solution, just as simply, is to create a new habit.
Habits, like rules, were meant to be broken. They are very easily changed, but it takes some motivation on your part and quite a bit of conscious decision-making. A habit also usually requires several days in a row of acting in the different way before it will go into effect and become a habit.
The experts agree, across the board, that the number of days is 21, three weeks. So if you want to change your habits, you have to act the way you want the change to be during every day for three whole weeks. At that point, the behavior becomes a habit and you will no longer have to consciously make it manifest in your life; it will be there working by itself.
Why bother, you say? Deep down, you know you’d love your home, your office and your life, a lot more if they were clutter-free and well-organized. If only some friendly genie would come along and clean everything up, things would be so nice.
It’s your life, though, and your home or office. Take a look in the list below at the benefits you will derive from getting it in order. Then decide if you want to become your own friendly genie.
THE BENEFITS OF GETTING ORGANIZED
Save money!
Once you are organized, you will find that you are able to save money because of your new choice of lifestyle. How many times have you had to go buy an item you needed, even though you knew it was right there in your house... somewhere? When you know where everything is, that will never happen again.
What about all those extra trips to the grocery store you and your family are always making, just because nobody planned ahead? If you have one place for your grocery list, and the items you need are put on that list only, then you will very seldom have to make an extra trip to the store. You will waste less food, too.
While you are at it, why not make a place for coupons and special offers and keep them close to the grocery list? You can see how that will save you money!
Save time!
Every single project you choose to do can be accomplished faster and more efficiently when you’re organized. With the ability to find the items and information you need, whatever you want to do will be easier. Your thinking won’t be interrupted by constantly looking for something, and you will be able to approach your project with a clear, unencumbered head.
Obviously, the project will come out better in the end, and the whole process will flow easier. In fact, your entire life will have better flow and more balance, just because you have a place for everything, and you keep everything in its place!
Role model for your kids!
How did you get in this mess in the first place? You are not organized because you never learned the habit of organizing. When you do yourself the favor of changing your ways by developing the habit of organizing, you show your kids how to do it and help them to develop the habit early on, when it really counts.
Imagine how much constant frustration they can avoid when they grow up, just by adopting the anti-clutter habit! And if you decide to embark on this quest to an organized way of life, then give some serious consideration to involving the whole family in the process.
Impress your clients!
Nothing says I know what I’m doing
like a clean desk and uncluttered office. When your clients see a glowing, empty surface or only one file on your desk, they will be automatically impressed and instantly reassured. And they should be! It’s a graphic illustration of the state of your mind. Can you find whatever you need quickly in your office? If you can’t, your client may feel he is not in the right hands.
In business, as at home, it behooves you to organize and maintain a protocol of ongoing organization. Improving your business habits in this way will improve your business itself, by streamlining your work and impressing your clients.
Be safer!
Even if you live alone, you must admit—if only to yourself—that a well-organized place free of clutter is a safer
