Exploring the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal

The South Coast of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa is one of the many scenic coastlines in the world. The area, South of the city of Durban up to Port Edward, situated close to the Wild Coast, is known as the KwaZulu Natal South Coast. This region is the coastal playground of South Africans, and the rest of Africa and for many tourists from all over the world. They all come for the same reasons; the spectacular scenery, the pristine beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean and the near-perfect sunny weather, not forgetting the friendly residents and plentiful accommodation choices.

The South Coast has close to 125 miles of un-spoilt beaches, dotted with majestic rocky outcrops, many rivers and lagoons flanked by lush indigenous forests and most of the time, bathed in perfect sub tropical weather. There are many natural wonders, a fascinating history and an even more fascinating mixture of cultures all blended together to make this coastline one of the most spectacular vacation areas in the world. The South Coast of KwaZulu Natal certainly has a lot going for it.

Many of the towns and village names are derived from Zulu words describing the area. Durban is known as Thekwini, meaning the place where the earth and ocean meet, Amanzimtoti means sweet waters. Inkwazi is an African Fish Eagle. Umtentweni is the Zulu name for the grass that grows in the area.
