About this ebook

There’s no doubt about it, Satan delights in discouraging Christians by causing those in church leadership roles to stumble and fall into the sin of sexual immorality. It’s a sad story that appears all too often in today's newspapers and on the television. Not only does it affect church members, but Satan also uses these events to make unbelievers even more incredulous. They're sure to ask, "How can this Jesus be so special if His own disciples don't follow Him?" Rest assured, when our words and actions don't match, we deal a blow to His kingdom!

In "Hack, The story of a fallen shepherd," author Bob Steinkamp details the fictional journey of Pastor George Willardson, from his position as leader of a successful church to his life as "Hack," a down and out cab driver. This detour in George's walk with God, which began when he started counseling a parishioner with marriage problems, took him from loving husband and father down the pathway of adultery. Hack soon found that his entire life had been turned upside down. And what’s worse, the prospect for Christmas appeared to be one of solitude, separated from his family and his God. Yes, Hack seemed to be a man without hope, facing a bleak future. His foremost thoughts were that things had gone too far, and that his wife and his Lord could never forgive him.

But such was not to be the case. As with another character in a much-loved Christmas story, Hack was not beyond. hope. No, Hack wasn't visited by three ghosts who took him on a tour of past, present, and future, all in one night. Instead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit visited him during the weeks leading up to Christmas. What Hack (George) learned was that, with God, it's never too late to change. And that's the message of the greatest Christmas story ever told, the one set in Bethlehem! God sent us a gift named Jesus so that all could be forgiven. Yes, both prodigals and standers can change their ways and be forgiven. It's never too late to reconcile with God, and for marriages to be restored. And this kind of forgiveness can also lead a church to take back a pastor that temporarily became a lost sheep himself.

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” - Matthew 1:21 (NIV)

    CHAPTER ONE

    JUST CALL ME HACK

Faith Church is yours, Jackson. Pick it up. George Willardson listened to the call being given to another driver and stared at the green light on the front of the radio mounted below his cab's dashboard. The words that he had just heard from the dispatcher echoed in his mind. Even though George was waiting for a call, he was glad that the previous one was not for him.

What would I have done? he asked himself aloud, alone in the darkened cab sitting in the parking lot of a closed shopping center. George glanced at his watch. It was 8:20 PM Sunday evening services must have just ended. He wondered who from Faith Church needed to call a cab, instead of someone driving them home. Would not have happened that way before, George mumbled. Things must have changed drastically around there.

George adjusted the cap on his head and slipped lower in the seat of the idling cab, almost as if he expected that caller from Faith Church to enter his cab at any moment. Wearing a cap was something new to our friend George. He did not know why he had started it when he became a cab driver. Could it be for disguise?

The words of the last dispatch played over and over in George's head. Faith Church is yours, Jackson. Pick it up. A sermon illustration started forming deep within his being, and then he realized that he had no reason to come up with illustrations any longer.

Eighty eight, our favorite watering hole has a drunk run for you. George was thankful that new words from Kenny, the dispatcher for AAA Cab Company, replaced the Faith Church dispatch ringing in his head.

Got it, George shouted back, without ever picking up the microphone. In only three weeks, he had already picked up the traits of a seasoned cab driver, or hack, as some people call the drivers. Carrying home intoxicated people who were being put out of a bar was one task that George disliked. Yet they often tipped well, and George did not have money to pay the rent on his room the following day, so he gladly accepted the drunk call.

A few minutes later, George was in the bar attempting to coax a very intoxicated man out to the cab. In the background Elvis could be heard singing, It will be a blue, blue Christmas without you. The bar stench, combined with the music, nauseated George. He extended a hand hoping to quickly get the customer to the cab. Instead, the intoxicated man shook his hand.

Glad to shake the hand of my new friend, the drunk slurred. Buddy, can I buy you a drink?

One year ago, on this same post-Thanksgiving Sunday night, George was also shaking hands, at approximately the same hour. No, not in a bar, but at the front door of Faith Church where he had been the Pastor. Satan must be laughing. He had taken down another shepherd.

The story of Reverend George Willardson, minister turned hack, is not pretty. In fact, there are
