    Achiever Fever - David Cartwright

How many times have you heard someone say, I should have done that or I wish I hadn’t made that mistake? We all have regrets in life, but it’s usually up to us to minimize future disappointments and maximize our potential by taking control of our thoughts, plans, and actions in order to get what we want. You can do it when you get down to it!

You should never get tired of striving to make your life better. Getting and staying involved in a continuous process of improvement is like keeping fuel in your tank of dreams; it will stimulate your mind and body’s engine to achieve what you want most out of life.

Along the way, you’ll experience the good and the bad; it’s how you decide to act and react to those experiences that will be instrumental in determining your level of success.

I was fortunate to grow up in a combination of city, rural and small town communities in the Great State of Tennessee, in and around Memphis. The state is considered to be one of the most scenic in the U.S. with its mix of beautiful meadows, trees, lakes, rivers, and parks to enjoy while getting in touch with nature. The state’s colorful history, musical heritage and friendly people influenced me to appreciate a good story, a lively tune and a happy smile; I think you’ll enjoy a healthy dose of them all as you read on.

Living within and around a small town community close to larger cities gave me a balanced perspective on all of the things that life has to offer. Interacting with others in those environments helped me develop communication skills and street smarts that benefit me wherever I go.

I took advantage of every opportunity that I could to learn, explore, experience, play and travel while growing up and as an adult. There is always something to see and do, if you just open your mind up to the possibilities. Every community has its good points and bad; wherever you find yourself at this moment, be willing to look for the good and enjoy it, while you deal with the not so good. If you think you’re in a hopeless place or situation, think again—you have the power to change your circumstances, as long as you have a breath to breathe.

    Chapter 1

    What Motivates You and Me?

Necessity is the Mother of Invention.

    Author Unknown

What is one of the greatest feelings in the world a person can encounter? The feeling of achievement! When you achieve a goal, nobody can take that experience from you. You may lose a job, a piece of property, money or a relationship, but no one can take away the achievement; it’s always in your memory. When you create/accomplish something such as cooking a new dish, finishing a project, landing a job, inventing a new gadget, developing a business, building a fortune, or anything else, your sense of self confidence will mature. Once you achieve something, no one can tell you it can’t be done.

When we see someone else achieve anything significant, many times, we ask ourselves, How did they do that? If others accomplish something that we’re interested in such as making a good grade on an exam, securing a good job, or finding a great place to live, we want to know how. Sometimes, the reasons are visible or obvious; at other times, we have to wonder and may even ask a person how they did what they did.

When someone’s asked, Why are we doing it this way? the frequent answer will be because that’s the way we’ve been doing it. That response doesn’t really give the details of why something is done; it’s just an easy way to brush someone off just to keep the ball rolling. However, it may not be rolling in the right direction. If you’re the type of person who wants to make a situation better or think that there may be room for improvement, you’ll probably ask more questions, gather additional information and make suggestions that could help.

The more inquisitive you are, the more you learn.

What Motivates Us to Do What We Do?

Are you ready to improve your life through the process of a few changes? The way you live, work and play as a lifestyle makes a difference when it comes to being more successful. We’re going to explore some of the reasons why you do what you do and some ways you can make changes for the better. If you’re not currently satisfied with all areas of your life, then you’re reading the right book.

Do you really care why people do what they do? If you want to get ahead in life, it will pay for you to ask why. The sooner you figure out what motivates people, the sooner you can look at yourself and begin laying out plans for what you want. Studying others is a great place to start in determining what you’re willing to sacrifice in achieving your goals.

When we really think about it, there’s usually a reason for everything. We can study and analyze an action, situation or behavior to realize what’s behind it. Some people are more perceptive than others; they’re able to see things that may not be readily apparent upon first glance. The more perceptive individual has a tendency to question motives for other people’s actions before taking action themselves. This technique of listening before you leap can be a valuable tool to use in avoiding mistakes. You can train yourself over time to question your own mind and others before moving ahead to your intended goals, thereby tuning up your perception.

Observe how some children constantly ask their parents Why do we have to do this? or Why are we doing that? If you’re a parent or plan to be one someday, and want to raise successful, well-balanced children, try to answer their questions as much as possible, without getting irritated. Each time you do, you’re helping them build up their minds to handle life. It’s better to give them details behind your answers, if you can, than to tell them, because I said so, that’s why.

Most people get frustrated when you don’t explain yourself or you give them a verbal brush off. These frustrations can lead to resentment, a lack of cooperation and less desirable outcomes. Use question and answer exchanges as learning tools for all concerned.

In team settings, you and your family, friends or co-workers can brainstorm, figure things out and be better prepared to take the right actions necessary to achieve your goals and objectives. Working with others toward common goals can be very motivating. Let’s take a look at some theories and facts about what motivates people to do what they do.

Maslow Was His Name and Needs Were His Game

Abraham Maslow, creator of The Hierarchy of Needs in 1943, studied high achieving individuals and came up with a group of needs from his research that stretched from satisfying the basics of the human condition to self actualization. His theory of psychology used the terms Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and Love, Esteem, and Self Actualization needs to describe the pattern that human motivations generally move through. To self-actualize, an individual must satisfy the basic needs of securing food, clothing and shelter, then move on toward higher levels of fulfillment, beyond what the average person usually gains. The average man or woman seems to be so busy living paycheck to paycheck and recovering from their mistakes, that they don’t position themselves to have the freedom necessary to pursue bigger and better things. Maslow theorized that you must take care of the basics first to move ahead in life, then expand your being through emotional growth and achievement. Achiever Fever recognizes some of Maslow’s philosophy as a base of what motivates people to face and meet the demands of today’s world.

It wasn’t until I attended college and took a psychology course that I learned of Maslow’s research. I believe his theories should be taught to students at a much earlier age to enhance their understanding of themselves and others. If you plan on going to college, I highly recommend taking a couple of psychology courses; you’ll be able to use the more in depth knowledge of human behavior extensively, as you deal with others.

Achievement requires a wide range of actions and talents that must be acquired or developed. The basic needs for food, clothing and shelter may be easily satisfied in the good times. When times get tough, like they are today, it will take a little more knowledge, effort and skill to get the job done.

Economists say that full employment is reached when 95% of the eligible population is working. With unemployment rates at historically high levels at the time this book was written (between eight and nine percent), it’s now more important than ever to get back to the basics and make sure they’re covered. Companies, governmental agencies and other organizations are cutting back on everything. Look at the pressure being put on the safety net programs such as unemployment benefits, welfare, food stamps, pension plans, 401K plans and Social Security benefits.

Realize that you might have to do things a little differently than you did in the past to have a better future.

Once you have the basic necessities covered, you can move up the scale toward satisfying the other aspects of your life, but let’s focus a little more on the basics for now. It seems like a good time in history to make moves toward more self-sufficiency and less government support as we try to recover from the imbalances in our world. What can you do to improve your chances of maintaining a level of long term stability?

Start by thinking flexibility: the more flexible you are, the easier you’ll adapt to changing circumstances.

Let’s say you have an apartment of your own and you lose your job. What are your options? Are you going to be flexible and take an available job that you’re probably overqualified for, at lower pay, or will you try and hold out for a better job while your bills pile up and your credit rating goes down? It usually takes about one or two months of missing payments before unpaid bills can affect your credit report. Think survival first, then you can strive for something better! Do what it takes, even if it’s moving in with family or getting a roommate. Don’t let stubbornness take you down. It doesn’t have to go that far if you pay attention and stay a few steps ahead.

Maslow found that satisfying the basic needs came first. He further developed his hierarchy by adding social and emotional needs. The need for love, respect and belonging has to be satisfied for long term stability in all humans; he theorized that if those needs went unfulfilled, taking care of the basic needs would be more difficult. What can you do to realize the satisfaction of your needs at all levels and achieve more balance?

Balance is one of the primary goals you strive for while juggling the many aspects of life. Support from family, friends and co-workers is vital to achieving the satisfaction of the basic, social and emotional level of needs. What do babies look for when they watch their parents? A smile or small talk from Mom and Dad confirms they are the protectors, supporting and loving their baby in its seemingly helpless state. After the baby is fed, it still desires to know and feel love and security. Eventually, the child grows to develop a mind able to understand language and voice its desires for further support.

In a normal loving environment, there’s a balanced give-and-take relationship between the parents and child. The child will get reinforced love and moral support which in turn will be returned to the parents in the form of visible affections. Don’t we all like hugs and kisses if we can get them?

Remember the Caveman Days—Back to Basics

Life in the caveman days was as basic as it gets. The needs were simple—find food to eat, locate a safe place to get out of the rain and meet someone for company. Things haven’t really changed that much, now have they? An empty stomach, extreme weather conditions and loneliness have always been great motivators for taking action. When the typical caveman and cave woman were able to meet their basic needs, there was time and opportunity to explore new ways of improving life and having a little fun too.

As the cavemen learned how to live off the land and reproduce, they developed more abilities and responsibilities to take care of their family and operate with other cavemen in groups. Societies developed where families were able to interact with other families and enjoy the power in numbers. Once the basic needs of the day were satisfied, there was time to play. The cavemen developed games, music and other forms of entertainment to pass the time. Some cavemen were more successful than others; back then, just as it is today, the strong survived and the strongest thrived.

How were some cavemen able to live better than others? They must have applied some of the basics of achievement—start from where you are, develop a plan, take action, learn from your mistakes and continue doing what works. By continuing this process and looking for more opportunities, they were able to beat the odds, survive the elements and thrive. Using successful experiences as a gauge of what might work for the future is a smart way to get ahead.

When a caveman learned he could be more successful with the help of others, he used that knowledge to pick and choose who could help him. At the same time, the cave woman was looking around and learning the same things. She had a brain capable of recognizing what was good and what was bad and she did her best to maximize her chances for a good life. She was motivated to look for a good caveman who could provide for her needs just like he was looking for a good cave woman to help him.

    Understand the Balance of Power

The balance of power in relationships was in full effect between the male and female species in the caveman days, just as it is today. People need each other to get through the challenges of life. You may be able to operate by yourself on a limited basis, but sooner or later, you’ll need the help of others if you want to thrive. The more you can satisfy someone else’s needs, the more they’ll be willing to satisfy yours. Once you take care of your personal needs, you’ll have more to give to others and your efforts will be rewarded.

You must give in order to get ahead; give more often than you take. Most people want to reverse this more proven path and receive before they give. That philosophy is usually counterproductive. Although it’s not realistic to expect to come out on top every time, by recognizing and practicing the trends to success, not failure, you’ll win much more than you’ll lose.

Pull from your motivation to succeed and prepare yourself to achieve more. Understand that the power to satisfy your needs is derived by having something of value that you can use or trade for something else. Having more assets, money, or other support than you require gives you a chance to build up a reserve and have it available when you need it. You have to get past the basics to get ahead in life. Set your sights on developing abundance so you can fulfill your dreams and have enough left over to help others too.

From Here Until Eternity—There’s No Romance Without Finance

Before money was invented as a source of exchange for items of value, people traded their goods and services. In the early days, the caveman brought home the meat, while the woman took care of their children and the area in and around the cave. If they both did their jobs well, they stayed together and enjoyed each other’s company. They were able to have children, help them grow into adults and help each other combat the dangers of life. As long as each one did his/her part, everything was fine. However, if one or the other got lazy in fulfilling his/her duties, or refused to do what they were supposed to do, trouble was bound to develop.

You can imagine what happened if the caveman came home with some meat to cook and his woman had let the fire go out. The caveman might have taken a club to his woman and roughed her up. She in turn might have picked up a rock and put a bump on his head. Whatever way they showed their disapproval for not being satisfied, it was probably not a pleasant situation.

If the caveman went out looking for food and was not able to provide what the family needed on a regular basis, the woman would most likely look to replace him with another stronger, smarter, more capable caveman. She might try to use her leverage and withhold something of herself to motivate the caveman to do better. She might give the caveman a chance to improve, but if he failed to do so in a timely manner, her survival instincts would kick in and she might go shopping for a replacement!!!

In today’s environment, money is a major motivator. We use it as the universal tool to satisfy our needs. Without money, we’re out of business. If we come up short, operating too long with more expenses than income, we’re headed for trouble with ourselves, and in relationships with others. This lack of money (finance) will cause all kinds of problems that start off small, then compound into a domino effect. One thing leads to another, and very soon your whole life can be in a tailspin, headed toward disaster. You can avoid these problems if you take a little time to understand the basics of finance.

Live Below Your Means—Do You Know What I Mean?

We know that It takes money to make it Honey. The sooner we learn to live with that fact constantly in mind, the quicker we’ll achieve our goals. How can you increase your chances for success? Live below your means! Why do you think
