Dr. Holly Fourchalk

Dr. Holly Fourchalk practiced as a registered therapist for 20 years. During that time she questioned the fact that the brain requires nutrients to create neurons, neurotransmitters, transport systems, to fuel processes and to eliminate toxins. If one’s brain doesn’t have the sufficient nutrients and capacity to detox, she surmised, then surely that would affect one’s capacity to think, feel and function. Always working with leading edge science, she continued her research of the mind and brain outside of the psychological parameters. When she went on to study Naturopathic Medicine, she found that there were various dysfunctions, disorders and depletions in the body known to cause psychological issues, including depression and anxiety. Transferring from Naturopathic Medicine to Doctor of Natural Medicine, she also finished her Ph.D in Nutrition and a Master’s Degree in Herbal Medicine. She went to India to study Ayurvedic Medicine and followed that with studies in German Homeopathy. She continues to expand her knowledge of ways to help people heal from today’s common ailments that allopathic medicine tends to simply manage. Dr. Holly’s mission is to empower people to reach their full potential in all aspects of health. Her in-depth understanding and training, in so many different modalities of healing, allows her to address the inter-connections between the mind and body allow her to help people in ways that few others can achieve. She is a passionate health researcher and an engaging teacher. Everybody needs a Dr. Holly. Also see Dr. Holly’s other books.

A Short History of Weight Management

As with many issues in life, the perception of the perfect weight has changed tremendously across time and across cultures. Many blame the current media for creating and distorting the perception of health in terms of what the ideal body size and shape should be but it is far more complicated than that.

History shows us how hilarious we are – how political, environmental and economic cultures all have an impact on the general public’s perception of the ideal female body shape. Today we have taken that a step further. We have added in the influence of the media. In addition to increased print, we have television, movies, internet, and more.

However, throughout history any current ideal of what the female body should look like has been difficult to attain. Women are phenomenal. They will sacrifice themselves, i.e., their comfort, their hunger and their health, in attempts to achieve the impossible.

In addition, different cultures throughout history have evolved specific ways of understanding the human experience with respect to what defines a body that is healthy and in balance. Different cultures and different medical beliefs also have different opinions in terms of how and why the body gets out of balance and also how to restore balance.

Who defines balance for your body – the culture, politics, or economics? How does a society determine what is best for all? Who has that power?

To whom do you give that power?

    AYURVEDIC MEDICINE

Ayurvedic philosophy identifies three aspects to any component of life. Believed to be the oldest known medicine, Ayurvedic medicine has a philosophy about life, a strategy to live by and an understanding of the human psychology and physiology. It suggests that there are three major aspects to any component of life. For instance, whether we look at:

    - How you think

    - How you feel

    - How you look

    - How you behave

    - What you desire/avoid

    - What you eat/avoid

Old Ayurvedic scripts even describe the cell, molecule, atom, and electron in terms of the balance between these 3 basic components called : Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

These three components, called doshas, each have a very detailed characterization, but briefly could be described as movement, transformation and structure or Vata, Pitta, Kapha.

The balance of these three doshas is unique to each body and the particular balance in your body will determine for you:

    - The body shape

    - The body functions

    - The metabolism

    - The disease predisposition

Thus the cause of your weight issue is looked at very comprehensively and without criticism or judgment.

    TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICNE

In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) the cause of the weight imbalance is looked at primarily in terms of the acupuncture meridians (which were actually determined first by Ayurvedic medicine).

There are 12 parallel meridians with dynamic connections between them. They are assessed predominantly in terms of cold/congestion or a yin condition; or heat/inflammation or a yang condition; and movement (Qi).

For example, the cause of imbalance might be cold/congestion in the stomach/spleen meridian or poor Qi in the Triple Burner, or too much yang in the kidney meridian. These issues would be treated initially by herbs then later, the acupuncture system was developed which was utilized in conjunction with the herbs.

Dealing with these perspectives to bring the body into balance can be very effective.

However, dealing with alternative perspectives on weight management is going way beyond the scope of this book. Just looking at a variety of variables from a Western perspective is going to be extensive enough.

In fact, even looking at the Western perspective and its development over a prolong period of time is going to be beyond the scope of this book.

So let’s take a quick look at the social changes and medical perspectives that have occurred in Western society over the past few hundred years.

    Prior to the 1900s,
