    Introduction …

    All of life’s experiences have an effect on our spiritual growth. We reap what we sow.

    My belief is that we are all connected through Universal energy. Reiki taps into this Universal energy; it flows through us all.

    I have always believed in the healing power of touch. Reiki helps bring my spiritual beliefs into a more tangible form.

    Reiki energy can be used for hands-on healing or healing at a distance. Most Reiki healers claim that to be a channel for Reiki a person must undergo attunement by a Reiki Master. Other schools of thought believe everyone has the natural ability to utilise Reiki to some degree without having to undertake instruction or initiation.

    There are healers who may have been performing Reiki for years without knowledge of how their healing-hands work. Learning about Reiki might help these people to increase their knowledge about the body and the chakras and how to channel Reiki more effectively. In other words, Reiki provides a practical explanation for their innate skills. Even so, the only way for natural healers to get recognised certification of their abilities is through a ‘qualified master’ who will insist that attunement is essential. This is a part of the Reiki syllabus and a one to be respected. Even so it is my belief that it should also be respected that some highly spiritual people can perform Reiki without attunement.

    In teaching Reiki to others my intention is to instruct in the traditional and non-traditional forms of Reiki with emphasis on the individual’s preferences and experiences. I will provide the basics, you must make the choices. My advice is: when in doubt, follow your heart and your conscience.

    This book endeavours to cover all questions you are likely to ask about Reiki.

    What is Reiki?

    Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is an ancient healing art which involves the laying-on of hands. It is a form of spiritual healing that helps to balance the mental, emotional, spiritual and physical energies within us all. It should not be looked on as a substitute for traditional medical care; Reiki will help improve recovery by directing healing energy to where it is needed. Reiki helps to harmonise body, mind and spirit.

    The word Reiki is derived from two Japanese words: rei meaning Universal Spirit and ki meaning life force energy.  In Reiki, hands are the channels for energy (ki) guided by the Universal Spirit (Rei). Ki or Chi is also a term used by Chinese mystics for the underlying force of universal energies? Mystics of all cultures speak of the physical universe being made of an underlying form of energy which is subject to or affected by thought.

    Reiki is a flexible, ever-evolving form of healing, relaxation and personal development. Practicing Reiki helps bring about harmony in the body, leading to a deep sense of relaxation. As well as having this wonderfully calming effect on the healee, the person giving a Reiki treatment also receives the healing effect of the Universal energy that flows through them.

    This is said to be an intelligent energy in that it seems to know where to go for healing to take place and what is needed. It never does any harm. The energy does not come from the Reiki practitioner. The practitioner is a channel for the healing energy.

    Some benefits of Reiki include:

    * pain relief

    * a balancing of physical/mental/emotional and spiritual energies

    * enhanced personal awareness; Reiki increases inner peace and mental clarity/emotional stability

    * improved creativity

    * suppressed feelings are released

    * a reduction of stress and tension

    * aids positive thinking

    Reiki can therefore be used for many reasons including
