About this ebook

The Mayan Astrology Handbook starts by describing the 20 Mayan astrology signs or day signs. This correlates to the sun signs in Western astrology. Then the book talks about the numbers that are part of the system. These correspond to the influence of the moon in Western astrology. The next influence is the ruler of the Mayan week into which you were born. This can be compared to the rising sign. I give a short description of all 260 day signs that includes a bit about famous people born into each sign. Then comes the concept of the directions. Each day sign is ruled by a direction: North, South, East, or West. The nature of the directions cause harmonious or challenging interaction with each day sign and create a compatibility factor of this system.
The book also offers a three step method for attuning to the Mayan astrology system. You can go from learning your day sign and number to following along with the direction and energy of each day to doing ceremony to welcome in each Mayan week. The ceremony is done by the Maya in their villages every 13 days. You can choose the level of participation that is best for you.

    About the Author

    Introduction

    Contents

The purpose of this book is to give you a tool for living in the transformative energies that are now impacting our world. The Maya, who have populated Central America for thousands of years, created a way to harmonize with the cycles of time through their system of astrology. Mayan astrology is based on their grasp of the nature of the light energy that comes from the center of our galaxy. We call this giant pinwheel of stars and light the Milky Way, but to the Maya it is the source of all creation called the Hu Nab Ku.

The intention of Mayan astrology is to assist you in understanding the influence of this light energy upon you and upon each day. With these insights, you can easily harmonize with galactic light energy. This synchronization will enable you to successfully ride the waves of galactic energy that are continually striking our planet instead of being pulled under by these formidable currents of energy as they impact and transform our world.

Even though the Maya were a primitive culture in many ways, their location on Earth gave them access to knowledge of the planets and the galaxy that they diligently recorded as cycles of time.

The transformation of our financial, social and political structures is showing us that the cycle of time we are presently in is a time of transition to hopefully a more harmonious world. The events in our present times mirror the inner and outer evolution of our species and our environment. Those of us seeking to successfully maneuver through these times are looking for other options that can be found in the knowledge and practices that have been used by native cultures for millenniums. We are now realizing that what we need to survive and thrive in the new frequencies of our planet can be found in ancient teachings. When we are able to experience and attune with this astrological system, we can successfully navigate the challenging times that are upon us.

I was exposed to Mayan calendar astrology in 1998. I came upon this knowledge by being in a relationship with deceased Mayan calendar scholar Ian Xel Lungold. We came together at a very potent time, according to many Mayan calendar scholars. Our connection gave me the foundation for comprehension of this astrological system. Now I have been guided to share what I learned.

I studied Gregorian or Western astrology, based on our Gregorian calendar, long before I came in contact with Mayan astrology. I have found that one can be aware of the influence of the planets in our solar system that is delineated by Western astrology and you can also be aware the influence of the light energy from the center of the Milky Way that is explained by Mayan astrology. You can understand and work with both influences to the best of your ability.

Transits are a big influence in Western astrology. They can be used successfully if a person is aware of them and consciously desires to utilize them. The Mayan system works with who you are and the here and now, with the day today. The Mayan system is something Eckhart Tolle, author of The Power of Now, could appreciate. The astrology of the Maya is concerned with the light energy of the present day. Mayan astrology focuses on the galactic influence that was impacting planet Earth the day you were born and how the energy of your personal Mayan astrology sign combines with the current day. This information can come in handy if you choose to become aware of the influences of galactic light.

In the Mayan astrology system, each one of the 20 astrology signs has supportive, empowering, challenging and surprise days that cycle continuously. Knowing how the energy of each day interacts with your astrology sign can assist you to be more productive at your job or career and have smoother interactions with coworkers and family. It can help you plan a trip or meeting that will have the positive, productive outcome that you desire. The ways that you can benefit from being aware of the influences of galactic energy upon you are countless.

There is also an influence in Mayan astrology that is like a short transit in Western astrology, the thirteen day Mayan week. The essence of the Mayan week you were born in also flavors your basic nature. Understanding the impact of each new Mayan week can help you to use that week effectively. I will explain the influence of the Mayan week, how it affects your day sign or basic personality and how to use the influence of each week to your best advantage.

I have created a three part system that will help you to attune to the Tzolkin or Mayan sacred calendar at whatever level of participation is right for you.

When you are in harmony with the flow of this energy, you will instinctually know how to navigate through all the changes in your life. Being in harmony with the flow of energy that is emitted from the center of the Milky Way, you will naturally be in the right place at the right time. This alignment will assist in weathering physical, financial, emotional or spiritual storms that might come your way due to the elevation of the consciousness of our planet and solar system.

    Preface

    Contents

I feel it is important to share with you that this book is written from the perspective of an astrologer. I will be the first to admit that I do not have the connection to the Maya of today that many other writers on the subject do. I present this book as a system of astrology. The Mayan Astrology Handbook relates all of the basics of this astrological system.

My goal in writing this book has been to define the basics of this system as it may have been used at the time of ancient Mesoamerica. In doing a vast amount of research, I have found that even the Maya of today have made changes in this system. I feel that this discrepancy has developed due to the isolation that the Mayan civilization has experienced over the millenniums. Over time the tribes from different regions changed many aspects of the Tzolkin calendar. The names of the day signs, the count of the calendar (which day it is according to different tribes) have all been subject to a lot of different definitions. The ancient Maya had many calendars. The one with the end date of 12/21/2012 is called the Long Count calendar. It documents a 25,000 year cycle. I have also found that the contemporary Maya have blended these calendars. The Kiché Maya have blended the solar calendar with the Tzolkin and have Monkey as their first day sign instead of Crocodile.

In Western astrology, the majority of astrologers agree about the traits of a Taurus or a Libra. In the world of Mayan astrology, there is no such agreement. Each tribe and their day keepers and elders have different opinions of the nature of each sign. What I have done is to define the personality of each day sign so that the personality and basic nature are easy to understand. I have combined research, particularly that done by astrologer Bruce Scofield and the experience of contact with the Maya of today from Ian Xel Lungold. I have combined these two sources of information to make a system of Mayan astrology that is easy to incorporate into daily life. In working with many people, I have come to see that the definitions of the personalities of the day signs are very accurate. I have also found the compatibility factors between day signs to be very precise.

My perspective on my rendition of the astrological system of the Maya is that it now is a complete cycle of experience. There are cycles of every four days and every thirteen days. This book shows how the directions of the sacred calendar, the Tzolkin, interact with each other. These cycles are smaller divisions of the many cycles that make up the Mayan concepts of time and rebirth.

With this in mind, it is my hope that the reader will have a connection to Mayan astrology that they can use in their daily life.

The Tzolkin and How It Works

    Contents

The Tzolkin that is still used by the Maya of today was adapted by the Maya from the same basic astrological calendar of the Olmec, Toltec and Aztec cultures. The large astrology stone the Aztecs made, that is found everywhere in Mexico, has the same basic astrology signs as the Mayan astrology calendar. Only the names of the astrology signs and some of the meanings were changed by the Maya. The Tzolkin is still used today by the Maya in their villages of Southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. The Mayans use this calendar to be aware of influences in their daily life and to know when to do ceremonies and other important activities. The personality of each child is clear to the Maya according to the day that they are born. Their system of astrology helps them decide who will have what role in the life of the village culture.

The Tzolkin is a perpetual calendar. It continues to recycle every 260 days, or 9 months. Ian would bring up the fact those 260 days or nine months is the gestation time of the human embryo. Many Mayan scholars have related that 20 is the number of fingers and toes on each person and that there are 13 major joints in the body. The Maya saw their astrology as a reflection of the human body. The combination of the 20 day signs and the 13 days of each Mayan week combine to create 260 unique day sign/number personality combinations.

Part of your Mayan astrology sign includes a number from one to thirteen. This is a significant influence that should be considered when you are learning about your Mayan astrology nature. The number adds to the personalization of your Mayan astrology sign. The combination of the day sign and the number blend together. The day sign and number equate to the sun and moon influences in Western astrology.

The essence of each of the 260 day sign/number combinations is also influenced by the Mayan week into which each day sign is born. The ruler of the Mayan week, that starts the week with number one, acts like a subtle watercolor wash over your personality. You are impacted by the influence of the week of your Mayan birthday as well as your day sign and number.

For instance, if your Mayan birthday is 4 Jaguar, you will also be influenced by the Monkey day sign since you are born in a Monkey week. That may translate into an interesting duality for the 4 Jaguar person. The basic nature of the Jaguar is to stay out of the limelight. The 4 number makes the Jaguar want to stay within whatever they consider to be their foundation or home. The Monkey influence many create a desire within the 4 Jaguar person to come out of his lair a bit. This stimulation may bring the 4 Jaguar person out of his cave so that they will enjoy being the center of attention or where the action is. The 4 Jaguar person may embody other traits of the Monkey persona and might have a lot of creative talents. Even though this may sound a bit confusing, the Mayan astrology system is very simple and easy to follow. This handbook will give you all the information you need to fully understand yourself in this astrology system as well as how to follow the influence of the present day.

These charts are made available courtesy of www.mayanmajix.com

The first action that you should take is look up your Mayan birthday. You can do that by using the charts included in the book. First you need to look up your year of birth on the year chart.

Then look up your day and month of birth on the Month/Day chart. You will add these two numbers together. If it comes out to less than 260, you can just go to that day on the Tzolkin chart. If the number is more then 260, subtract 260 from the larger number, and that will be your Mayan birthday. If you were born in January or February, like Ian and I were, then you use the year before on the Year chart.

On the chart there are two numbers. The day or Kin number, from 1-260 is there to help you find your location on the chart. My Kin number is 118. Above that is the number from 1-13 which is your number within the Mayan week. Being that I am a One Flint, the number 1 is above the 118. If you look over at the left hand side, that has the names of the day signs, you will see that I am a Flint. This is the method that you use to find your day sign and number.

In what Ian used to call Gregorian astrology, the astrological system of the western world, the astrology signs are named after Greek and Roman gods and goddesses. This was the way that these ancient cultures were able to personify the energies that come from the planets in the solar system. The astrological sign of Aries is named after the Roman god of war and represents Mars, the planet of warrior energy. Venus is named after the Roman goddess of Love. The energies of the planets in our solar system have an influence upon us. Astrology has long been a way to describe the influence that these heavenly bodies have on humanity.

The Maya created their own system based on the effects that the energy from the Hu Nab Ku or center of the Milky Way has on us. The Maya identified these influential energies and gave them names and identities to correspond with their environment and cosmology. The Maya describe these
