    The ‘Practical Dreamer’ Declaration

    DEDICATION

This book is dedicated on the one hand to my parents. Dad, despite the death of your father while you were at the tender age of nine, you induced a dream and have achieved great feats in your lifetime. Mum, you stood by Dad through your invaluable support as dad reached out to touch many lives. As a result of all that you have done for me, I am able to dream and achieve.

On the other hand, I also dedicate this book to the millions of practical dreamers who will undertake works of exploit. What should you do if you see your dream begin to fail? Reach out for one more dream!

    FOREWORD

I have a lot of admiration for young people who dream and then dare to take the action to turn their dreams into reality. Kola Olutimehin is one of those practical dreamers, who has made his own dreams a reality. He shares some of the principles with us in the pages of this book, in a practical yet entertaining way.

As a young man, I had dreams of my own, many of which have been realised, although not always in the way I could have predicted. Looking back, it seems that some of the most valuable lessons I instinctively imbibed have been touched on in this book. It took me years to step out in faith, holding on to my vision for a pharmaceutical chain, and from there into various business ventures. This sort of book would have been an invaluable resource and an encouragement to me, had it been published in my day.

When I first started reading this book, I wondered what this young man could have to say to an elderly man of nearly eighty years of age. Kola is a gifted narrator and writes with passion about his own vision, all the while encouraging the reader to discover and express their own passion. I was delighted to find that there is still a lot to learn and that even at my age, I am still expected to have dreams and passions, and act on them. Proverbs 29: 18 says,

Without a vision the people perish.

This book is both a motivational resource, stimulating in itself, and also immensely practical, giving many references worth following up. There are many nuggets of wisdom and quotable quotes. One of my favourites was this –

Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.

I have been touched by the accounts of the author’s relatively short but eventful life. He has described difficulties and challenges, not always painting a rosy picture, but encouraging the reader to deal with their fears, develop boldness, and work on self-discipline and enduring faith amongst other things.

Finally, Kola not only has the desire to be personally successful, he also wants to make a positive impact on others outside his immediate circle, and that is to be highly commended. In his vision for his hometown of Ondo for example, he paints a wonderful picture of a prosperous town where there is light and water, and where the well-educated citizens enjoy a high standard of living. Dreams like this continue to motivate me, and it is a vision I hope many more of our fellow Africans would share. We all need to play our part in moving the nation and continent forward. I believe great legacies come not from amassing personal wealth, but in creating living memorials that impact on the lives of ordinary people.

    Kola has quoted a Chinese proverb in his book;

A journey of a thousand miles starts with the first step.

I would encourage you to begin your journey by taking time to read through this book and dream. The wisdom contained within it will be life-enhancing.

    Chief Olu Akinkugbe C.O.N.

    INTRODUCTION

Everyone desires to succeed but most people never realize success and allow it to elude them throughout their lives. Why are some people successful and others not? This is a question that some of the best minds in the world have pursued.

Napoleon Hill grew up in a rural mountain area of South-West Virginia which had little contact with the outside world. Hill’s background was surrounded by poverty and ignorance. Hill spent a lifetime to discover and record his findings as to why some people are successful and others are not.

Now Kola Olutimehin has written Dream and Achieve to help you discover your purpose in life. Self motivated people know that definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement.

Read Dream and Achieve, then go back and read it again and study each suggestion as to how each one can be a part in your future. A self help book like Dream and Achieve is to be read on a regular basis until the information becomes part of your subconscious mind.

As you read Dream and Achieve remember the statement of a famous man who said,

You must have castles in the air before you can have castles on the ground.

Realize this statement means the dream first, then a plan — action and reality. But first you must use your mind to vision the outcome before you start on your journey.

As you read Dream and Achieve, discover your purpose, achieve your dreams, and recall what the author Ben Sweetland wrote that,

Success is a journey and not a destination.

What you become as a person while on the road to success is much more important than the goal you desire.

If you have any doubts that every human was meant to be successful, read verse 29:11 from Jeremiah where the Lord said,

For I know all the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are the plans for good and not for evil, to give you a hope and a future.

I wish you the very best as you set out on your success journey.

PREFACE – ANY DREAM WILL DO

I had scheduled to travel from London to Leeds on September 1, 2004, on a personal business assignment. However, during the night, I had a premonition that I was likely to lose my life on the trip! Coincidentally, my wife had a dream during the same night, of me losing my life on the proposed trip. When I woke up, I spoke to God about it in prayer, asking Him to protect me on my journey. I set out from home at about 5:30am in order to beat the early morning motorway traffic, and made my way towards the M25 so I could join the M11.

Due to the forewarning that I had had during the night, I was engaged in a meditation and conscious conversation with my Creator, discussing some of the things that I believed I would achieve in my lifetime. Prior to this, I had learnt and always taught that people should write their autobiography as a ninety-year old person, by imagination, describing the things ‘they had achieved’ in their lifetime, hence I was reviewing some of these in my mind.

I remembered crossing the Dartford toll and paying the toll fee, as well as being held up by some early morning traffic. I recall that I had parked on the hard shoulder (by the side of the road) along the way to check my road map to ensure that I was travelling in the right direction. The next event I remembered was looking up into the face of a paramedic (ambulance staff) attendant, who told me that I had had an accident, and he was trying to get me out of the vehicle. After this, my next
