David Northrop

David Northrop is a lawyer who started telling stories to his children, mainly to keep them quiet and help them go to sleep.Someone foolishly suggested he should write one down and Gnomes is the result. The Isle of Wight, a small island off England , is partly to blame. David went there on holiday as a child and local legend had it that gnomes lived there. This suggestion has never quite gone away although Gnomes is set in the English countryside

    Chapter 1

The village of Gander lies deep in the countryside, winding down the hill following the S shaped road that used to be an obscure coach route to the coast but is now an obscure B road to the same destination.

At the top of the hill lie the church and graveyard next to Gander Hall, an tall square bleak house with the look of a Victorian workhouse about it. In fact parts of the house are much ,much older but obscured from the outside by the zealous makeover of several centuries ago.

Opposite the Hall is the village green and cricket pitch with houses below which face the road.

In bottom loop of the S sit the Rose and Crown pub, the Olde Smithy and a Tea shop.

There is also the small grocery store, a hairdressers and the Post Office. Further cottages line the road along from the Post Office.

The Rose and Crown used to be a coaching inn and hotel and along with the Tea house still gets some trade from tourists taking the slowest, most scenic route to the coast.

Tom and Molly live in a low slung, used to be white cottage set back from the road and opposite the Rose and Crown. The cottage is long and thin with three bedrooms and the bathroom nestling up in the eaves. Downstairs the house is divided into dining room and sitting room by the stairs with the large flagstone floored kitchen running right across the back of the house. Behind the house is a large rambling garden which runs down the stream and beyond that the woods.

It was one of those storms. The rain was driven in sheets by the wind and the trees whipped from side to side under the deep black clouds. Michael was in his bedroom at the end of the corridor next to Uncle Tom’s and Aunt Molly’s bedroom. He was reading using the china castle with the light inside where the light shone out from slit windows and the portcullis. Tom and Molly knew that he would wait until they tucked him in and turned out the light before switching on the castle and taking a book. They also knew he never read for too long or was tired the following day. Michael listened to the storm whistling around the cottage. From his bedroom
