Chapter One

I have been alive for more than a millennia. I was ‘born’ as a demon of human destruction, one of many. I can create and control fire with a mere twitch of my fingers. Or my eyes. Or my nose.

Frequently the chaos I cause destroys something in nature, too, and I hate that. For every living thing I ruin- aside from humans, of course- I try to give something back, by planting a tree, or immediately growing a garden, or whatever.

I hate humans. In all my years, I have never lusted after a human female. I may have found them attractive, but never enough to dip my wick in one. The female demons I know are plenty for me to handle, and they don’t get all emotional and needy when you leave five minutes after coming.

And yet…

Now, this is gonna make me sound like a total pussy, but there are times when I’m alone- and by alone, I mean in my own little corner of Hell, where no one can go without my invitation. Literally, Hell- and I wish that I could fall in love. My best friend Thanatos, a life demon- meaning he’ll spare you from death if you make him a promise or grant him a favor- he recently fell in love. With a human woman. Ugh!

But I think he had the right of it. Believe it or not, female demons are the colder of the species. Not that they don’t occasionally fall in love, typically with a persistent male demon, almost never with humans. But a male demon is far more likely to do so than a female. I have other friends that have fallen, as well, although none with a human.

I just didn’t get Thanatos’ obsession with his woman. I think part of it was because I was a demon of human destruction, and therefore had a natural aversion to them. Why would I like something I’m meant to destroy? It didn’t seem plausible.

But that was before I met Kitt. Hell, I hadn’t even met her yet when I felt the first stirring of lust for her. I’d only spotted her across the restaurant, arriving with Thanatos’ woman, Kaylin, for our blind date/ group dinner.

I took one look at her medium-length chestnut hair, twisted back and up into a clip with that little spray of hair at the top, and her moss green eyes, and my mouth fell open. And I hadn’t even reached her body yet. Of course, it was just as delectable as her face. Her breasts were perfect, a little more than a handful, her waist was trim but not thin, and the legs I could see beneath her dark teal green dress- which, admittedly, made her eyes even more of a lush color- were toned, as if she worked out, but wasn’t a runner. Her height- about 5’7"- put her at a perfect height for cuddling or screwing, both of which I was tempted to try with her.

That stirring of lust lit like dry tinder.

It took me a full ten seconds to realize I was staring at her, which pissed me off. So I fixed my face into a more serious look as the women joined us. We were introduced by Thanatos- Kitt Lawrence, Andreus Fotia, blah, blah, blah- and we shook hands. I’d been warned by Tos before then to hide my demon powers more than I usually did, just in case.

I expected it to be boring, being at a meal with my best friend yet unable to talk like we normally might have because of the human females. But Tos and Kaylin were in their own little world for the most part, though Kaylin frequently gave Kitt and I hopeful glances. I wasn’t sure why. She didn’t even like me. We barely tolerated each other, and only for Thanatos. Yet, suddenly, I was good enough for her best friend.

That left Kitt and me mostly to ourselves. Again, I didn’t expect to enjoy her company, but I did. She had a naturally inquisitive mind, which was a good thing, I supposed, since she was a Private Investigator. She asked me all kinds of questions, had a seemingly bottomless well of them. I wanted to be annoyed, but couldn’t seem to pull it off. Instead, I answered the ones I could- more patiently than I’d known I was capable of- and steered her to herself on the ones that I couldn’t.

With little to no effort, I had her phone number, and with even less, she had mine. That was a trick I still haven’t figured out. She seemed very interested in me, and though I wanted to deny it, I was more than a little interested in her. Honestly, I have no defense for myself. It simply happened, that easily. For some reason, I felt no ill will toward her, as I did most humans.

When our meal was complete, and we’d dragged it out as long as we all dared, I offered her a ride home. I used the excuse that I was doing it for Thanatos, so he could ride home with Kaylin and they could knock boots, which I’m sure is exactly what happened. Naturally, she accepted- I wouldn’t have offered if I thought she would refuse- and we headed toward my SUV, her arm tucked through mine. I saw her glance back and give Kaylin a huge grin, and I wondered briefly how far I could get with her tonight.

She didn’t seem easy- I would have respected her less if she did- but who knew with human women just how fast they’d spread their legs for a guy who looked like I did? That’s not arrogance- though I possess far more than my fair share. I am simply a good-looking creature. With angular manly features, mid-back length blond hair, and nearly-yellow green eyes, most females- human and demon alike- look more than once at me. Add to that a body I keep bulkily sculpted- because I prefer being brawny to lanky- and chicks practically fall at my feet.

I opened her door for her, enjoying the way she smelled like Calla lilies and freshly cleaned sheets, smiling benignly as she climbed in, her face slightly flushed from the treatment. With a final wave to Tos and Kaylin, I turned onto Lincoln Avenue.

She guided me with words out of Steamboat Springs, toward Oak Creek. She talked the whole time, slipping her directions into the conversation so that I nearly missed them once or twice. That was a bit infuriating. But I bit my tongue, listening intently as she told me about a case she was working on without actually telling me anything.

Halfway to Oak Creek, I was instructed to turn onto a long gravel driveway that led back to one of the many farms in the Yampa Valley. I pulled to a stop near her front door, checking automatically for the quickest exit.

This is your house? I asked, leaning forward to look out the windshield at the sprawling ranch house and the surrounding outbuildings.

She smiled. Yes. My parents gave it to me when they decided to move closer to Denver.

Hmm. I nodded in interest, though at that point I couldn’t have cared less about her parents or what they’d given her. It’s nice. Got any animals?

No. My parents used to have a whole bunch. But I rent out the stable and pastures to my neighbors with cattle. I’ve considered selling portions of it, but can’t quite make myself do it, you know?

I didn’t. I barely had any idea of what she spoke. But I nodded anyway. Yeah. I can imagine it would be hard to part with any piece of this place. I almost vomited, my voice was so understanding. I had no idea what the hell was going on with me. While I wanted her- another anomaly- it wasn’t as if there was a shortage of demon companions I could have had that night. Kitt should have been nothing to me.

Yet I found my eyes floating toward her, and when I saw her sweet smile, I knew I’d said the right thing. She was pleased that I had understood her plight, and had sympathized. Like I cared.

Except I did. I stared at her for a long time, as she stared
