Introduction

Use this book as a guide to finding your way through the maze of the world of music licensing. We’ll detail how we got into this business and how to think about your music career, and give you practical tips on finding success. Each section is arranged to build your knowledge base as you move though the chapters, so it’s best to read through once, then feel free to skip through different sections later when you need specific information.

Some links are provided throughout the text that will take you to important resources that can help you learn more. The appendix provides a directory of labels, publishers, performing-rights organizations, and more industry contacts to get you started.

Licensing your music for film, television, advertising, games and more can help you build a fan base, enhance your income, and open new doors to bring your art to the world. When you’re ready, you’ll need to know where to turn to get your music heard. In fact, we also offer one-on-one consulting (see the Resources section for details).

Getting started

It’s one thing to dream of working in the music and entertainment industry, but it’s quite another to acquire skills, assess your talents, make personal contacts and put together a strategy for success. From determination and perseverance to creativity and delivering the goods, all the parts combine to carve a path that will work best for you. Our goal is to help shortcut that process.

Who we are and why we created Musync?

Seb Jarakian supervises all final track selections at Musync. His job is the key secret to the synchronization process.

When a client comes to him, he uses all his experience and knowledge of all music genres, including acoustic, new wave, electro, industrial, classical, hip-hop, folk, ska, shoegaze, dubstep, big-band jazz, trance, electronic and more.

He also uses his understanding of the entire giant catalog of music at Musync, all of which allow him the ability to find just the right song for a TV series, a simple background piece for a catastrophic bar fight, or maybe a silly little percussion piece for a TV spot.

One of the reasons musicians fail to popularize their work is that they approach the wrong people with the wrong music. Their excitement and their naiveté blunts their ability to identify the right market for their music. Seb reviews hundreds of music tracks every week so
