      FOREWORD

      First of all I would like to thank you for having purchased this book and I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. It is part of an e-book series that covers all cars produced by Daimler-Benz during the 1950s and 1960s.

      The early 1950s were still a time of shortcomings. Electricity, coal and raw materials could still not be supplied as regular as needed. But compared to 1947, the launch of the first Mercedes after the war, it was a vastly different scenario. The Marshall Plan (officially called the European Recovery Program or ERP) and in Germany the currency reform had a huge impact on the restructuring efforts and the general morale of the people. Although in the early 1950s most of the physical manufacturing capability was still not yet rebuilt, the technological capability and skill of the worker and engineer was intact.

      Launching in quick succession within a single year the 220, the 300 and 300S was an enormous achievement just six years after the war. Hermann Ahrens, who had designed such masterpieces as the 540K, was in the early years after the war in charge of body styling at Daimler-Benz and as money was still tight, he was forced to live with a design that satisfied the more traditional thinking Mercedes customers, but was fairly outdated when compared with modern ponton designs, which were already available at other European car manufacturers such as Borgward or Rover. Although the 220 is seen today by many as just a warmed-up version of the 170S with a bigger, more modern engine, it was an important model for Daimler-Benz. It secured the niche for executive cars below the luxurious 300 Adenauer and paved the way for the successful 220 ponton models.

      Fully revised with more technical photos added, this guide explains in detail the W187’s chassis number and data card and gives an outlook at how the data card evolved towards the early 1960s. Another chapter covers the different paint and interior color options.

      Developing a new six-cylinder executive sedan

      CBS introduced the first color television broadcast with Arthur Godfrey and Ed Sullivan and Remington unveiled the first commercial digital computer, called the UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer), whose first customer was of all possible options the Census Bureau. Lockheed was awaiting customers for the exciting all new Super Constellation and the US Air Force placed its first order with Boeing for the B-52, an 8 jet-engines powered cargo plane, which was so advanced in its design and capabilities that it is still in use 60 years later.

      Later that year the Broadway play Gigi opened, staring a little known young actress Audrey Hepburn playing the lead character. And an actress with the same last name joined Humphrey Bogart to perform in the
