Foreword
As a Vicar, and not a very good one, what I most like to see is this: When a church member sees a need, thinks and prays about how he or she can help, and then proposes the solution and offers their energies to help others achieve it. This is, to me, one of the surest signs of the handiwork of the Holy Spirit. And this is how this book came about. Barney has drawn together the thoughts and experiences of many St Martin’s and St Thomas’s Church members to form a down to earth, real and practical devotional aid for lent.
I commend it to you as yours. Its strength and power comes from the fact that you and your brothers and sisters wrote it. It springs from your area, your experience, and your issues. I hope and trust that it will help you to a greater contact with the Holy Bible and a deeper devotion to God. If you use it each day it will be like a shared pilgrimage, a journey of faith together, it will be something we can think about, talk about and pray about together. Even if you can’t get to a home group, or even a service sometimes, you will be sharing with the fellowship.
So make this your Lenten fast; to spend time alone (with your friends) with God. Don’t rush it, don’t neglect it, but enjoy it - like a spring in the desert.
Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools.
They go from strength to strength,
till each appears before God in Zion.
Psalm 84:5-7

The Daily Reflections
An opening prayer to use before each reading:
Lord God,
Open my ears to hear your word,
Open my heart to respond to your call,
Open my mind that I may remember your teaching,
And guide me always closer to your path.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Matthew 16:24
Then Jesus said to his disciples, Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

Day 1 | Ash Wednesday
Lent starts with Ash Wednesday and many churches have a service where members receive ash in the shape of a cross and the minister says, Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ.
This is usually quite a moving experience with a deep challenge. It is putting our earthly life into a perspective without any reference to our eternal life. We prepare for heaven here. We get ready for all the joy of the party with a bit of hard work beforehand. We understand that, that’s how it is with any party.
But we can so easily misunderstand it, because the hard work is not earning our place at the table, nor is it proving we are worthy, or that we really want it or deserve it. We can’t earn it. That is the point of the cross. Jesus has done it all. He was obedient. He was sinless. He suffered, and he died, to make a way to heaven for us all. He is the Way. We are dust, he is the Saviour.
If we were lost on a foggy mountainside and the rescue
