Aaron Pery

As most authors might claim, I was always been a natural storyteller and voracious book reader. Somehow, I also knew that some day I would sit down and write a book, which I did quite recently. When I finally sat in front of my computer monitor to do just that, the words literally came pouring out. Before very long, I had written many books in various genres. At first, my prolific writing was mainly for the pleasure and self-entertainment involved, until I discocered Smashwords and ebooks, and here I am, a published author with a long list of books to my credit. And many more to come.

    I, Vampire

    Chapter One

I've been bitten!!! Crazy as it must sound, I was bitten by a vampire two weeks ago and now the fact that I'm in the process of turning into one is starting to manifest itself both internally and outwardly, which is absolutely ridiculous yet it's happening to me.

My name is Arthur Sawyer, an about to be medically discharged Marine lieutenant colonel who had the misfortune to step on a landmine four months ago, which blew my left leg off almost to my knee. The surgery to clean and prepare the stump for a prosthesis was quite successful since the surgeon was able to save the knee so that I would be able to appear and function nearly normal once fitted with the artificial lower leg. I resented their decision to be discharged since I thought that I could easily returned to active duty once I got used to function normally, even in combat, with my artificial leg. But the powers to be thought otherwise and insisted discharging me with a full disability pension.

The result of their decision was that although my physical therapy was quite successful and I had no problem functioning almost normally, my mental state deteriorated daily. I had gone to the US Naval Academy in Annapolis twenty years ago, at age fifteen, and chose to become a Marine rather than a Navy officer upon graduating and have been serving mostly in combat ever since. So what in hell am I going to do as a damn civilian, I kept asking myself.

I was so depressed that despite being counseled by various experts in the field of rehabilitating injured soldiers, my condition worsened daily. Then, trying to help my state of mind, my childhood best friend Ralph challenged me to a game of tennis on the court of the Marina Club after I bragged to him that lousy leg and all, I could still whip his ass. Which I happily accepted even though I knew the reason behind his invitation, and then managed to win two out of three matches, which uplifted my spirits considerably and I literally strutted to the lockers to take a well deserved shower.

When I came out of the shower hobbling toward my locker and holding my artificial leg, I was confronted by a strange sight as I reached the open area section, of two highly muscular men entangled as though in great passion. I knew that Ralph was openly gay since our early childhood, and neither of us minded the fact, so my first reaction to seeing him in the arms of the other naked man didn't surprise me since it was still quite early in the day and the club was nearly deserted. I almost chuckled to myself as I was about to turn away from the scene since I didn't want to ruin Ralph's encounter with such a masculine looking male specimen.

But then my years of combat experience kicked in and my hackles rose when I realized that there was something very wrong with the scene. Then I saw the blood on Ralph's chest and realized that, crazy as it might seem, the other man was not kissing his neck but biting him, and I rushed over as quickly as I could to help Ralph. The other man was so intent on sucking Ralph's blood that he didn't hear me until I put my hand on his shoulder, intending to yank him away.

To my utter surprise, rather than trying to escape, the man whose face was covered with Ralph's blood let him drop to the ground and snarled as he attacked me, making us both fall due to my imbalance on one leg. Then, the son of a bitch clamped his mouth to my neck and bit me, and I could feel my blood starting to flow as he sucked it into his throat, which hurt so much that I let out a yell. But rather than let him suck the life out of me, I tightened my grip on the artificial leg and hit him on the head with all my might. My strike was so strong that half his head came off and the contents of his skull spilled all over my face just as I fainted.

I woke up in a hospital bed, feeling drained mentally and emotionally, and tried to sit up with a start when I remembered what had happened but a hand on my chest prevented me from doing so and pushed me back to the pillow.

Don't try to sit up, Mr. Sawyer, because you'd lost a lot of blood by the time you were discovered and the paramedics were called in. Luckily, that crazy lunatic didn't manage sever your carotid artery so all they needed to do is stopped the bleeding.

I looked up and saw a young man looking at me with concern, and saw that the name on his tag said Dr. Saunders. Ralph? I asked, though I knew it was useless.

Sorry, Mr. Sawyer, but your friend died of loss of blood.

You mean to say that he was drained out of it by the fiend who had tried to the same thing to me, like he was some sort of vampire?

We don't know that. Another voice said from behind the doctor, who helped me up to a sitting position and I saw a well-built man in his early thirties who wore a slightly rumpled suit. My name is Detective Howard of the San Diego Police, and I'd been assigned to this case.

I don't know if Mr. Sawyer is strong enough yet to be questioned, Detective. Dr. Saunders said.

Nonsense, Doctor. He looks okay to me after resting for twenty-four hours and, besides, Colonel Sawyer is a Marine like me and we're used to being injured and surviving it quite well.

You're an ex-Marine as well, Detective?

There's no such thing as an ex-marine, Doctor, only an old Marine.

I chuckled when I heard him spout the old adage. Very true, Detective. So how can I help you?

By telling me what had actually happened in the locker, Sir.

After giving him all the details, I asked. Was the thing that killed Ralph and almost succeeded to do the same to me, a vampire?

There's no such thing as a vampire, Colonel, only some crazy people who saw too many movies and TV shows about such things and decided to act the part.

I could've sworn it wasn't an act, but never mind that. Who was that man?

Unfortunately you'd busted his face to smithereens so we can't enter his picture in the computer for facial recognition, and his fingerprints weren't matched when we entered them into the Afis, the national Automated Fingerprint Identification program, which doesn't means anything, only that he may have never committed a crime before. Still, we're quite puzzled by how he'd managed to reach and enter the club naked without anyone noticing this six-two extremely well-built man.

Maybe he flew in from wherever he came from.

Come on, Colonel, you know that we can only deal with realities and men don't fly. Anyway, I'd like you to stick around in case something new comes up.

I ain't going anywhere, Detective, at least for a while yet until the Marines decide what to do with this cripple.

Cripple my ass, Sir. Not the way you'd bashed the son of a bitches' head.

Thank you detective. And you have my BOQ address at Pendleton so you can contact me anytime.

    Aye, aye, Sir, will do.

They kept me in the hospital for another night, to increase my strength after losing so much blood, Dr. Saunders said, which I had to believe him because they kept feeding me high protein foods every hour and made me take a bunch of iron pills, so I lay back and let them. My stay in the hospital this time was quite pleasant except for the visit from Ralph's parents which, though they treated me well and warmly, made me feel guilty for surviving the attack while he didn't. Then I was visited by Ralph's lover, who held my hand and kept crying and moaning about the loss of his partner of ten years, which made me cringe even as I patted his shoulder constantly and acknowledged his terrible loss.

The stress of their visit was was alleviated quickly when Uncle Seth, the only living relative I had left in the world came in
