    Editor’s Notes

‘God’s Face In Facebook’ is somewhat, the ‘display’ of a true online chat room. What we could describe, to be more explicit, as a ‘peeking’ into a real private chat room. So, its natural characteristic ought to be preserved, as to reflect the unconventional expressive style, typical to all online private chatting room.

We would like to thank everyone for their support, and particularly Christina for making that story possible.

    A Fascinating True Encounter

    CHAPTER 1

The Clash between a Believer and a Nonbeliever

On a sunny, hazy day of May 2009, like any ordinary day, Joseph is sitting in front of his computer, doing some business-related activities. The serenity surrounding the friendly neighborhood, filled with happily singing birds, is sometimes disturbed by a passing car or the excessive barking of a nearby dog. Days pass by but are not different from each other. Habitually, Joseph likes to enjoy a snack during his midday break, while checking out his email box or surfing the web with the expectation of something new.

However, the daily routine would definitely change when he took the decision to send out a note to a girl he recently came across during a previous web surf. After having looked closer at her pictures posted on Facebook and read over her profile information, Joseph thought of the idea some what amusing. After all, they are both living in the same city and seem to be at less than a dozen miles apart.

At that moment, her Facebook page was displaying the following information about her:

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. You only lose what you cling to, Buddha. ♦ MORALS ARE FOR MEN NOT GODS.

Networks: VCU ♦ Relationship Status: Single ♦ Birthday: May 20 ♦ Current City: Woodbridge, VA ♦ Political Views: Leftist ♦ Religious Views: Agnostic ♦ Lucky Color: Lilac ♦ Personality Strengths: Knowledge, Vibrance ♦ Sense of Humor Style: Slapstick ♦ Adjective to Describe You: Impulsive ♦ Openness: ⁷⁸% ♦ Conscientiousness: ¹⁷% ♦ Extraversion: ²¹% ♦ Agreeableness: ³⁸% ♦ Neuroticism: ⁹⁶%

Further more, a quiz result would reveal that she is a pragmatic person who knows what she wants in life, but who also believes in hard work in order to reach her goal; and so on and so forth…

Here is basically how Joseph initiated the first contact…

    Hey, I like your eyes!

Christina Neal May 27 at 7:30pm

    Thanks!

Joseph Rubbens May 28 at 12:51pm

You look so sweet in your pictures; but, they do also show some troubled saga if I may say so… I wish I could make you smile!

By the way how do you define Agnosticism?

Christina Neal May 28 at 12:59pm

    Thanks for your kind words.

I don’t know, I just don’t like smiling in my pictures that much... And yeah, I think I do have a tendency to really show my emotions on my face.

To answer your question, agnosticism for me is basically not knowing if God(s) exists; the fact of being uncertain. I’m not a hard agnostic I guess. In other words, you can say where they believe it’s impossible to know.

Joseph Rubbens May 28 at 1:06pm

Well, I noticed some strong religious quote and verse on your page; that’s why I wanted to challenge your belief. You do sound very intelligent; but being in denial sometimes makes us suffer. You’re probably some strong Christian descent, referring to your name... As so well stated on your page, everything good in life is about hard work and it is also true for your faith.

What do you mean by it’s impossible to know?

Christina Neal May 28 at 1:15pm

Heh... I’m not in denial; I just lack belief. I think religions are partly just a pipe dream to satisfy people’s need for immortality/justice/purpose, etc. I would say that I am interested in different religions and I do agree that most of them have wonderful values/words of wisdom (which is why I have some religious quotes on my page). But, I don’t believe in the validity of religion itself. For instance, I believe the practicing of the Buddhist way of life would be deeply fulfilling. However, I don’t believe in the mythological aspects of it.

To answer your last question, some Agnostics assume that it is impossible to know whether or not God exists and that there is never going to be sufficient evidence to confirm it.

Joseph Rubbens May 28 at 1:55pm

Woow, I’m starting to love your verve! But, I do also notice some ‘impulsion’ through your response... However you need to remember this, ‘The truth shall set you free’.

People who can not prove the existence of God are those who not only can not define Him, but are instead trying to materialize Him. Life itself is the manifestation of the existence of GOD...

Nobody can see the electricity but we have all witnessed its manifestation. I don’t see much difference between the two concepts. So simple, right?

Christina Neal May 28 at 2:10pm

The problem I have with comparisons like this is that even though we may not see the subject but still can experience its effects, much like gravity, or even abstract concepts like love/hate etc., I still haven’t experienced any revelatory effect of God’s presence; so it makes a moot point in my case...

God is extremely humanized in a lot of religious texts. If we look at the biblical God for instance, He appears to be a warring, tribal God with a lot of negative human characteristics (Anger/Wrath/Jealousy).

I don’t see any evidence of this type of personal God, or any type for that matter, that directly intervenes in human affairs. Look at the state of the world; good things happen, bad things happen and we are left to fiend for ourselves. When does God intervene? When do we see God’s ‘benevolent’ effects? Whether it is in extremely awful situations occurring in Rwanda, Darfur, the Gaza Strip, or Iraq…? Does God intervene when an individual is getting raped/murdered/tortured? Nope! You may say ‘free will’ and as so, that ‘we are the artisan of our own destiny’, which I think is a lousy defense. BUT tell me, if we do have free will and God can’t intervene... then, what direct use does God have in this world?

I don’t see any evidence of a God that interacts in this world, which is the main reason why I’m agnostic.

Joseph Rubbens May 28 at 4:28pm

If you never experienced the ‘benevolent’ effects of God, I’m sorry to tell you that, you probably never experienced LOVE, which is quite impossible...

But you also need to understand the ‘duality of life’; good and bad exist like day and night, as well as the straight line stretching to plus and minus infinity with zero for center. How
