It just seemed natural for me to give my time and talents as a human being, so I went to school and earned several degrees. However, working here at home was not good enough for this overly ambitious man; I had to do it on a global scale while working for the World Health Organization.Yes, I realized relatively early in my life that, I was a go-getter, eagerly pleasing and aggressively helping all I could. I found this passion for being very satisfying to my soul. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that, I signed up for almost every natural and manmade disaster deployment since 1989. I experienced almost everything medically known to man as I served in over 87 countries. I was an active participant in relief efforts for natural disasters from the 1991 Bangladesh Cyclone, the 2004 Taiwan Tsunami, the 2010 Russian heat wave and of course, the earthquake and tsunami in Haiti, among many others. Specifically, while, in Haiti, I stepped over thousands of dead bodies and dealt with hundreds of cases of cholera and aides on a daily basis, along with many other types of diseases that are still classified today.I pulled people from the mud after earthquakes and handled delicate emotional situations. I saw it all. I felt joy when I brought someone back from the brink of death or disaster, and I felt devastated as I stacked dead bodies faster than I could find a space to place them. One of the rarest opportunities a man could ever hope for was when my team and I were stationed in Zimbabwe Africa. The local tribal Ju-Ju man (Witch Doctor) came down out of the hills and approached me out of over 1500 workers, simply because I was the only one wearing a white uniform, and asked me through a translator if I would be willing to go live with him for two weeks. It was obvious that his curiosity of me got the best of him. After receiving approval from the Medical Director, I went in search of a better understanding in the world of a Ju-Ju man.These and many other experiences are why I fell in love with helping humanity. After achieving multiple Master Degrees, I have decided to publish one of my works entitled “ Improving Emergency and Disaster Personnel: How to identify, hire and train a new breed of elite Emergency and Disaster response personnel to mitigate tomorrow’s watershed of extreme disaster challenges.” My fellow humanitarians, our nation needs us. They need us now, more than ever. It is simply because the world is progressively falling apart. If you come away from reading my work with nothing more than a better understanding of how dangerous disasters can be, we can improve the world. We do this by teaching others what to look for within our communities and local establishments. I am married and have been blessed with 5 beautiful children, and I now work for the Department of Homeland Security as a Project Specialist with FEMA.“Saving a Life will bring meaning to your own.”Mark W.
