Greenberg is a product of New York City with an attitude to match. He was a senior official with the U.S. General Services Administration. After retiring, he was eager to write about his exciting and often unusual work experiences. During his career he had hands-on responsibility for some of the largest and most controversial federal construction projects in the country. Some of these projects found their way to national television, including Sixty Minutes and Inside Edition, were widely covered in print media, C-Span, and even made it to the late night comedy of Jay Leno and David Letterman.
Greenberg's involvement with high profile projects brought him into contact with presidents, big city mayors, members of Congress, judges, military leaders and giants of industry as well as community activists, labor unions, militant coalitions and a generous share of urban hustlers, petty thieves and con artists. He has spoken before many government and professional groups and testified before congressional committees. Every investigative body known to the federal government also examined his work. Through it all he demonstrated a unique and successful leadership style and an ever-present sense of humor, which he says is the key to long-term success in any project.
Greenberg looks back at his career and says, “When I came to GSA in 1965 I was a baby-faced recruit who got carded in bars for drinking eligibility. When I retired a lifetime later I still got proofed, but this time it was in the movies for the senior discount.”
He is proud of the fact that he actually retired from his senior executive position whereas many prior incumbents left via transfer, demotion, indictment or their passing.
Alan Greenberg earned BBA and MBA degrees from Baruch College in Manhattan. He was the recipient of numerous awards from GSA and other federal agencies, including a special award for his dedicated staff’s contribution to the post September 11, 2001 recovery efforts in New York City. He has also authored many sports articles and continues to be a regular contributor to The Fischler Report.view less
