Deadly Echoes - Nancy MehlI have been enjoying Nancy's Finding Sanctuary Series more than I did her Road to Freedom, and when I was given the chance to read Deadly Echoes, I was happy to do so. In Gathering Shadows, the first of the Finding Sanctuary series we met Wynter. In this new book we see her occasionally and find that she is still in the town. This story alludes to The reason why Wynter is in the community, and if you have not read the first one, you will be curious enough to pick it up later. It is not necessary to have read that one to enjoy this book. The story has a nice pace to it, and I found myself reading it to find out what happens next. For those readers who do not share my love of Suspense novels, this is not the adrenaline junkie type of suspense, but it has enough to keep you reading.In Finding Sanctuary, I did not find the undercurrent of the differences in religious customs to be as noticeable, though you can find them if that is what you are looking for.I will be looking for the next novel written by Nancy with anticipation.Thank you to Fred and Cheri at The Book Club Network, Nancy Mehl and BethanyHouse for the opportunity to read this novel. Rating: 5I've read several of Nancy Mehl's books and while Deadly Echoes is not a favorite, it is definitely a winner. This contemporary suspense set in a conservative Mennonite community is believable to those who understand the conservative lives of those who live there. Sharing a small town, Mennonite and non-Mennonite folks have found a way of life that is quite, caring, and grounded in a faith-based lifestyle.However, as with many good things and locales, the bubble bursts and evil creeps in. In the first book of the series, Gathering Shadows, the mother and father of Deadly Echoes female protagonist are killed in this little town of Sanctuary. Years later, another burst bubble in their quiet existence happens when one of the two little girls, now grown, who survived the Gathering Shadows murder is herself killed.Echoing similarities the two devastating events define Sarah's life. She seems to be as troubled as Biblical Job in that she loses those she loves to tragedy. Sometimes the gentle, probing conversations get tiresome to the reader (me), but they are leading toward solutions and dropping tidbits of information that help in the resolution of this terror-filled story. A good clean read. One you wouldn't be afraid to hand a teen or your grand mother to read.DISCLOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishing to facilitate this review. Two sisters survive the unimaginable. Left with more questions than answers the girls are shipped off to withstand the foster care system. Separated and raised separately to adulthood, they become reunited once again. Only to be torn apart by history repeating itself. Dark secrets, violence, dirty cops, and murder are only the beginning.I had to turn the lights on. I am mot sure what my mind set was at the time I had gotten in my favorite chair and opened this book….I was experiencing some anxiety. Nancy Mehl paints an extraordinary tale. Her characters are so real to life they could be your friends and neighbors. Fantastic twists and turns throughout this made an amazing read. If you want suspense and intrigue…this is for you. 4/5
Rating: 4The tight-knit, conservative community of Sanctuary, Missouri is just the place for Sarah Miller. With a childhood filled with tragedy, loss and upheaval, Sarah has found peace and security. But in Nancy Mehl’s second book in the Finding Sanctuary series, Deadly Echoes, the larger world intrudes and presents dangers that Sarah is not ready for.Nancy Mehl has become a favorite of mine. Her romantic suspense keeps faith at its center. I like that she creates communities in which faith in Christ is important and His love is lived out. Characters are not perfect — just like in real life — but are certainly real and relatable. In Deadly Echoes, Mehl keeps the reader on her toes with the twists and turns of past and present murder cases. Sarah is an interesting character — private and a bit aloof, she endeavors to keep her heart from more hurt. But when she opens her home to her ten year old niece, Cicely, she must confront old wounds and lies to reach true healing. Mehl creates a great cast of major and supporting characters. The town and lives of the people of Sanctuary really come to life. And if you like page-turning suspense and a puzzling mystery, Deadly Echoes is a great pick for you.In Deadly Echoes, Mehl explores what it means to be a unique creation in God. Sarah’s past has created deep insecurities that only God can resolve. Mehl does a great job in showing how careless words can wound and haunt for years to come.Deadly Echoes is book 2 in this series, but can be read as a standalone. I haven’t read book 1, Gathering Shadows, but I certainly intend to so I can revisit Sanctuary.Recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to Bethany for a review copy. Rating: 4Nail Biting Suspense!This is by far one of the best suspense books I have read this year. Every time I read a book by this author I always say, this is her best one yet. Once again I have to make this statement, this is definitely her best book yet.If you are looking for a nail biting, heart pumping, edge of your seat story this is the one for you. There are twists and turns in this book that you won’t see coming. Just when you think you have everything figured out, a new twist is thrown your way.I found myself thinking about this story even when I was in bed trying to sleep. My creative mind would play every scenario possible. I couldn’t get this book out of my head.Author Nancy Mehl was able to make the characters real to me. The characters in this book fit each personality created for them. I grew quite fond of several of them. Innocent little Cicely captured my heart. I wanted to wrap her in my arms and protect her. To make it all better.I have read many books by this author and have thoroughly enjoyed each one of them. I am looking forward to reading book 3 in this series. Rating: 5Welcome back to Sanctuary Missouri, a peaceful Mennonite town, or at least it is supposed to be. We welcome back old friends and meet some new ones, and of course our peace is soon to be broken.The story opens with Sarah Miller, the town’s schoolteacher being told that her sister has been murdered, and she is the guardian of her ten-year-old niece. This is where the real mystery begins. Yes she has just been reunited with her sister, and now that has been lost, and the eerie circumstance is about to reopen old wounds.The local sheriff is there for Sarah and Janet has always taken her under her wing, and is there for her now. She must get control of herself and travel to Kansas City to make arrangements and get her niece.As the facts start to unfold you won’t know whom to trust, just when I made up my mine, to go one way, another thing happened. Why? You are going to be surprised by the answers here, and who in the end does survive. The violence, and the unnecessary pain that the evil causes will devastate you, but through it all you find God’s hand working for those who love him.You will not be disappointed in this read, there is action around almost every corner, and you will be hoping for an end, and soon! I can’t wait for another book in this series, except I can’t seem to put them down until I’ve gotten to the end, and then I want more.I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.

I loved the sense of community that Nancy Mehl creates in her stories. I loved Janet, Paul and Cicely. They mad the story line. I think that Sarah started out weak. It was great to see the character grow. I was hooked from the start. The murder of Hannah and how this murder was linked to the girls past. There were some surprises that I did not see coming and that made this story unique. I liked that most of all. It was a dawning of realizing and tying together the letter that Hannah sent Sarah and the unraveling of this mystery. Thanks Nancy Mehl for another great suspense novel.I would like to thank NetGalley and Bethany House for allowing me to read and review this book in return for a free copy and I was never asked to write a favorable review by anyone.
Rating: 5What a satisfying story Nancy Mehl has penned in Deadly Echoes, book 2 of the Finding Sanctuary series! The book stands well by itself; I haven't read book 1, but had no trouble following the plot line and characters. Mehl uses ordinary, every day characters in her suspense novels, making them appealing and believable. I loved the emotions evoked by different characters. One of the main themes, that God has made us EACH in His image, and we don't need to compare ourselves to others, is very timely for me.Sarah, a young teacher, finds herself the guardian of her young niece after Sarah's sister is murdered. While Sarah sees similarities between her sister's death and that of their parents' almost 20 years ago, she has trouble convincing the Kansas City police department to view the cases as related. Can Paul, a local officer, help her sort through the puzzle, or would safety lie in leaving the past behind?Favorite quote: '"This was just a building...nothing more than a shell. What you loved in this house is still inside you. Your mother isn't here," I said, pointing at the ruined structure."She's in here." I put my hand over my heart. "And here."
