About this audiobook

"Few audiobooks warrant turning off all distractions, closing one's eyes, and simply listening to the story unfold. Narrator Caitlin Davies creates just that experience as she passionately guides listeners through this gripping story of ambition, love, and desire." — AudioFile Magazine

Tricia Levenseller, author of Daughter of the Pirate King, is back with an epic YA tale of ambition and love in The Shadows Between Us

“They’ve never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will.”

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

A Macmillan Audio production from Feiwel & Friends

“Tricia Levenseller’s latest, The Shadows Between Us, is a decadent and wickedly addictive fantasy, full of schemes and court intrigue, and delightful descriptions of food, which I am always a fan of.” —Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series

Story line was good but felt like it had been done many times before. There was nothing really exciting or any plot twists that you couldn’t see coming. The writing in places often seemed clumsy.

I’d call this book quite vanilla. You read the book description and that’s basically the whole book, except it’s a 9hr read. I mean I ‘liked it’ because I only have a few boxes to check off in the types of books I enjoy, but anyone who really values plot isn’t going to like this much, because it wasn’t well executed, and the ending was soooo sloppily thrown together.

I loved the concept, but the mechanics of court life is something I've seen time and time again, and have grown bored of. On one hand, I enjoyed the King and the main character, but I kind of wish the book had taken a darker turn and followed through with its own premise. The audiobook narrator suited the voice of the main character.

The writing is bad. It feels like it was written by a middle school girl trying to prove how badass they are and failing miserably. I had high hopes when this was marketed as a Slytherin book, but now I realize how insulting that statement is to all Slytherins. Just save yourself the trouble and read something else.

Couldn't get on with the audiobook narrator at all - way too dramatic and it honestly made me cringe to listen to her. I'd recommend reading it physically if you do pick it up.

Enjoyed reading it but the ending’s a bit of a letdown though. I also was able to guess the big reveal.

The heroine is such a breath of fresh air! Finally, a female who knows what she wants and takes it! We need more stories like these!

It is not a common novel, i really enjoyed listening to this audiobook. It is really interesting and entertaining. I wish I could give it a three and a half because I wish the author had developed the characters more introspectively speaking and Alessandra was repetitive . Would recommend if you want a cool simple read.

Great book, nice to read something that had so much depth, rich world building, interesting characters, and unique plot.

While the girl gets her man at the end, it wasn't a completely predictable journey and the tropes weren't over used.

I actually enjoyed the book quite a bit. It was fun to listen to but I had a few problems with it. The logic of some things wasn't really good, like for example how the murder of her first lover was handled and also what the plot twist was and how that was handled. I was also disappointed that this only had those fade to black scenes when it came to the spicy parts. All in all I think that the 3 star rating is a fair one from me.

This was a trashy YA book! I enjoyed every minute of it. I can totally see the slytherin romance in here. However, there is a lot of character growth. I believe people who like character development will really enjoy the character development in this book. I normally don’t give books a 5 star rating, so that’s a testament to how much I really enjoyed this book.

I'm kinda mad at myself that I liked this as much as I did. It's not great writing. But it kept me listening with the perfect amount of ridiculous escapism and a (huge) sprinkle of trashy. It had me rolling my eyes and saying "wtf" but it kept me entertained and I'm thinking I'll check out her other books now.

Although it was a bit of a slow burn, it was well worth it. I loved this book and the character development, and the story line. Alessandra and Kallias are perfect for each other, you can see it clear as day that they are meant for each other. The voice actress was perfect for this book, she did an excellent job at voicing different people. And I love how this is only one book that was perfectly tied together in the end, sometimes I prefer stories like this as they’re easier to read.

I really liked the plot and the story, the writer built a fascinating fantasy world. The relationship was believable and beautiful and the messages of the book are amazing, it does not matter if we are women or men we have the ability to achieve whatever we want if we believe in ourselves. Highly recommend !

This was so amazing!!! Alessandra is so unapologetically herself and I loved every second of it! Not to mention that she is wicked-minded, ambitious, but also kind, fierce, and clever! Kallias, the Shadow King was charming, determined, power-hungry, but was sweet, admits his mistakes, and he showed to be a soft-boy with a haunting past! He was just so loving! I will recommend this one always while it does lack a bit of world-building it was fast-paced and entertaining!

Something about this has something for everyone, love, danger, redemption. The anti hero role has never tasted so sweet on the lips of readers as we mumbled words as we read (or mumbled things to ourselves in shock as the plot twist makes our ears fall off).

Everyone is so caught up in world building they forget about the story and it shows, this book on the other hand is perfect. The world building is minimal, you know what you need to understand what’s going on but it lets you focus on the beauty of the words about the character interactions and how they grow and change.

The relationship isn’t perfect but something about this one has so many deeper symbolism then most people can see off the surface on the first read, it’s definitely worth a second to understand and pull from.

Overall a perfect read. I hope we get a second one.

The book was fantastic but I could not handle the narrator’s performance. And it skipped half way through one chapter to half way through the next. I ended up reading the physical book and it was much more enjoyable. The book was 5 stars.

OMG... what a ride this book was.. Alessandra was the Epic Heroine ... not your typical one... a lady confident in herself, in her sex, she knows what she wants and is not afraid to play dirty to get it but still sticks to her believes ... She is what queens are made off.
HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who wants to read about a lady in her pursue of power and love.

Alessandra plots to wed the Shadow King then kill him to be the only ruler. Only one thing she didn’t plan on and that was to fall in love with him. Lots of mystery and intrigue in the book will keep you guessing what will happen.

A fun, standalone fantasy that stands out from the others with a main character that will impress you in more ways than one and with a thrilling plot twist. A character driven story at a fun pace with a compelling cast. Great for fanstasy beginners for its simple magic system (there's only one power and one person wielding that power) and for more seasoned fantasy lovers alike for its political intrigue. A remarkable fantasy romance for the fact that it is slow-burn and there's a fun element of our main characters not looking for romance at all. I absolutely loved our main character, the love interest was interesting (which is something many fantasy's lack in my opinion) and believable and the other characters are well-developed too. If you enjoy character-driven stories, this is a great story for you! A well-thought out standalone that will keep you guessing till the very last pages.
