About this audiobook

Internationally bestselling author Mhairi McFarlane delivers a funny, romantic, heartfelt novel perfect for fans of Josie Silver or Sally Thorne, and anyone who loves Bridget Jones!

You always remember your first love... don’t you?

If there’s anything worse than being fired from the lousiest restaurant in town, it’s coming home early to find your boyfriend in bed with someone else. Reeling from the humiliation of a double dumping in one day, Georgina takes the next job that comes her way—bartender in a newly opened pub. There’s only one problem: it’s run by the guy she fell in love with years ago. And—make that two problems—he doesn’t remember her. At all. But she has fabulous friends and her signature hot pink fur coat... what more could a girl really need?

Lucas McCarthy has not only grown into a broodingly handsome man, but he’s also turned into an actual grown-up, with a thriving business and a dog along the way. Crossing paths with him again throws Georgina’s rocky present into sharp relief—and brings a secret from her past bubbling to the surface. Only she knows what happened twelve years ago, and why she’s allowed the memories to chase her ever since. But maybe it’s not too late for the truth... or a second chance with the one that got away?

Cute story and characters, if a little expected at times.

There are so many good reviews about this book... and it's not bad, but there is something missing. He & She are both over 30 but they act like 17... It wasn't as good as If I never met you.

    A Top 2020 Read

Holy Cow!! This author writes some of the best heroines. Granted, I've only read two of McFarlane's books and the heroines were wholly different, but also equally strong and amazing. I loved their voices, their authenticity, and their resolve.

Georgina was a powerhouse of a character. Her self-awareness and self-respect continued to grow, even when undermined by her family, an unethical boss, and a narcissistic ex. All of that occurring, while also navigating past hurts and misunderstandings when her first love unexpectedly reenters her life.

While this was more women’s fiction, the story also had a sweet second-chance romance with little flashbacks of a blossoming romance and its demise. Ultimately this was about Georgina admitting the truth of the past, the effects on her present, and reclaiming her future. It had a powerful and brutally honest ending and I've never related to a heroine more. It broke my heart in it's authenticity. Like the author's previous book, she also focuses on the heroine's strong and supportive friend base that help to shape Georgina's multi-layered character.

I loved this whole book, but the last 5 chapters were stunning! They brought tears to my eyes, made me laugh out loud, and idiotically smile in equal measure. Mhairi McFarlane has officially made my list of top favorite authors.

A very sweet story of self-discovery and dealing with the past to create a better future. Often hard to follow dialect and British terminology though.

Super predictable but fairly enjoyable. It is not really a romance but a sort of coming of age story/ accepting yourself story. I could have gone without the last chapter, fairy tale romance ending that wasn’t necessary. Some good parts about misogynistic behavior.

Mhairi is one of my favorite authors of the moment. Her books are so relatably funny. Her quick witted one liners have me laughing hysterically all throughout this books. Also her complete relatability between her 30 something characters. I loved this book. Her characters, the story line, the ending. Georgina is the heroine of her own story. She didn’t need a man to swoop in and rescue her. She did that on her own. Once again Mhairi nails it. Now headed to go find another one of her books or enjoy.

Perfect combination of funny, witty, and romantic coupled w/ more serious themes.

That being said, while this is a romantic novel, it’s steamy, not flagrantly sexual. In fact, I might rephrase what I previously said, and say instead that this is a substantial novel whose many themes explore romance, but centers a woman in her early thirties trying to figure herself out.

    Very pleasing and would recommend!

Mhairi McFarlane has become one of my favorite authors. Her books are packaged as simple, frothy almost "beachy" reads, but they pack a punch. They're typically cast with characters that call to mind the friends group in Notting Hill, or even Bridget Jones, and they are absolutely fun to read (and superbly narrated!). But McFarlane always takes on deeper subject matter really deftly and without making it heavy. Twice now, in this book and "Just Last Night", she's slipped in these poignant scenes that are key to the character's arc and so relatable, I've been in tears because they have felt like my own arc. She's caught me off guard with the heft of the emotion, but she doesn't dwell on it. I think it would be easy to write her off as a genre writer but her writing is more elevated than that. Plus, there is really just something about a British narrator that I find so pleasing! I'll read all of McFarlane's books! Well done!

This book took me on such an unexpected emotional joyride. Definitely listen to this if you are into well-crafted characters, a strong but vulnerable heroine, character growth, and lots of wholesome masculinity in the male lead. I wholeheartedly recommend it!!

Bought this because it had a dog in its cover and I thought it maybe a cute love story. Alas, it wasn't a love story. There was a touch of romance but it more about self acceptance and the like. Its cute but its not something I would rave about.

This was such a wonderful story! It has the perfect balance of dark and light themes, and honestly made me laugh on many occasions. It's such a great story of growth and shines light on harsher subjects that many women face.

Though the idea that two people, once crazy about each other in high school would actually believe the other had completely forgotten them in just 12 years was far fetched, the rest of the story was very good. I couldn’t wait to drive somewhere so I could listen to more. Nice ending, overall good book.

Omg. Everything about this book is perfect! I admit I would have wanted more Lucas and Georgina *steamy* moments and live throughout their relationship, but that’s because their love story is so heartbreakingly sweet!
I grew up to love Georgina so much!! Her journey of self growing and self love and facing her past.
Bravo, Mhairi! You gain a faithful reader forever

Honestly, I was hooked from the start as we tagged along with Esme through shades of the past, only to land in a present that was nothing short of newsworthy...only in the worst ways possible (think AWFUL job ended on their terms PLUS a scuzbag boyfriend caught in the act...eww). Let's face it, she's had a time of it, and while she openly accepts the blame big girl style for her part in things, the majority truly was anything but her fault...not that her FAMILY could have recognized that fact...gheesh! My heart ached for her with the lack of support she received for practically anything, but swelled in delight as she tackled life one crazy obstacle at a time in her own way, with her own fashion sense, and with heart. It was a terrible blow when the beau from yesteryear didn't seem to acknowledge their past in any way (WTH?!), when the more recent former beau wouldn't TAKE A HINT (and a hike), and life seemed intent on giving her more lemons than anyone would wish to make lemonade with, but SHE NEVER GAVE UP...which made her revelations during the Share Your Shame contest THAT much more freeing.

So, if you're looking for the possibility of a romance, a female lead with more strength than she knows, a male lead that doesn't know the power he truly holds, and a whole lot of ups, downs, and in-betweens with shock, humor, heart, and a hug worthy pupper...this one is TOTALLY for you!

This was not the romance I was expecting. There were quite a few issues, one of which was the writing. Another was the casual use of slurs, like g**sy. I hated the main character, too. She was supposed to be a 30 year old woman but she acted like a teenager.

My eyes are gritty, having read this in that marathon manner. And perhaps also cried a bit. Oddly, this pairing smacked so much of the book I just read with central themes around the hero (who is in all sense, extremely minor) to the heroine's choice in how she sees the world. If I have one minor criticism to lodge at this book, it would be this: too much. Georgina's drama from day to day felt endless, and not the mundane kind of drama with an edge of absurd that I feel McFarlane does well. There's a lot going on here. And honestly, this may be why it's not a 5 for me. I could've used a few fewer issues or situations, even though I know that's all very 'Georgina' in the end. And I know she worked in a bar so these things might happen more often or some such. Unfortunately, I have a major criticism too.The prologue also left no question in my mind for the most part about what happened next. There were plenty of hints to support it, and in fact, the way it's processed is highly effective and relatable. For me the prologue was exceedingly effective at setting up the characters' bones. I was as much in love with that intense 'early work' as our herione.((view spoiler) much of my internal dialogue of him whispered "coward," through the adult scenes, relying on crisis, alcohol, and slips to reveal his vulnerability, feelings, and critically (view spoiler). This ultimately works, because Georgina's coming into her power as a self-assured 30-something, but it failed a little for me as an ideal partner for her. So while Georgina's reminding herself and us she doesn't know Lucas, I'm responding "you don't, and he's a dick," and where I know this has worked for me a dozen other times in books - and favorites - Lucas's failure to ever resolve his cowardice until the final scenes (which ok, I read 13 times, because wow-although I could've done w/o the peanut gallery bathos) and really only show up in a time of crisis or a slip from influence of alcohol spoke of a deeper cruelty than I would wish on someone. It went on far too long, to the point that it had me shredded more than any reveal or his feeling therein because she continued to long for him based on his momentary heroics and slow warming. She didn't deserve it; I'm far too forgiving to think that even if he was under the impression he was after 12 years passing it's excusable to hurt someone else in the name of protecting your teenage ego. And, whew, honestly, I didn't know how much this irked me until I sat down to write about his character. But deep breath, because this book's HEA didn't seem the ultimate goal (I might've liked it better without), and the ultimate goal was far more satisfying. Georgina's rise to live her truth and her own life was a compelling, heartbreaking, and often funny journey. Her family's perceptions around her and the dynamics were extremely well drawn as were the depictions of grief. Georgina's the friend we all want to have or be; her voice strikes a familiar chord through her many experiences and she's a joy to read. (less) [edit]13Apr

Georgina is having a bad day, but things look up when she gets another job at the new pub/restaurant in town. Things go downhill again when she finds out that one of the owners is Lucas, her high school flame/nemesis. Though the beginning isn't exactly funny, hang in there because it gets better as Georgina and Lucas navigate a peace between them into a slow-burning romance. Ms. McFarlane is a master of interspersing comedic moments with serious scenes. I liked how Georgina grew as a person and Lucas is the perfect brooding hero. There's some angst but it's all good. I really loved this story and recommend it if you're looking for a good contemporary romance.

Georgina is such a lovable character that I didn't want the story to end. She is struggling through life - crummy job, crummy boyfriend, strained relationships with family. And then fate reunites her with the man she fell in love with in high school. But the catalyst for change is NOT falling in love - it is Georgina finally exercising her writing talents that have been languishing and getting really honest with herself (and a little bit with those around her). Each time I thought someone was going to come in and rescue Georgina, she rescues herself and is stronger for it. Loved the whole story arc.
