Descrizione

A wildly successful innovator to rival Steve Jobs or Elon Musk, Vivian Liao is prone to radical thinking, quick decision-making, and reckless action. On the eve of her greatest achievement, she seeks to outrun people who are trying to steal her success.

In the chilly darkness of a Boston server farm, she sets her ultimate plan into motion. A terrifying instant later, she is catapulted through space and time to a far future where she confronts a destiny stranger and more deadly than she could ever imagine.

The end of time is ruled by an ancient, powerful Empress who blesses or blasts entire planets with a single thought. Rebellion is literally impossible to consider - until Vivian Liao arrives. Trapped between the Pride - a ravening horde of sentient machines - and a fanatical sect of warrior monks who call themselves the Mirrorfaith, Viv must rally a strange group of allies to confront the Empress and find a way back to the world and life she left behind.

It's a good story, but the ending leaves a lot to be desired.
  • (4/5)
Great sci-fi standalone novel featuring a bunch of unlikely heroes reluctantly teaming together to take revenge and save the world.
  • (4/5)
An expansive, galaxy-spanning story, it takes a while to get where it's going. But it's got a great set of protagonists and a whole bunch of epic confrontations. The eventual conclusion is totally satisfying.

Non-stop action, wondrous settings, extraordinary characters, introspective realizations, all wrapped in lively descriptions and snappy dialogue. A story that comes alive in the mind as the galaxy unfolds. Highly recommend an enjoyable, riveting experience!
The audiobook reading by Natalie Naudus was awesome!

I really wish I'd liked this more, but I didn't feel any of it in more than a surface way.

In the middle of her attempt to unseat oppressive governments, billionaire genius playgirl inventor Vivian Liao is taken by a mysterious green woman into the far future, where she immediately plunges deep into galactic politics. Almost every speaking role with a gender is a woman, which is quite interesting (and gives Vivian a number of possible love interests, though she doesn’t play the field). I enjoyed it.

I found this audio book to be nicely narrated. The story was rather rambling and confusing, in my opinion. YMMV.

A pirate that was caught A servant that refused to serveA pilot without wingsA woman without a soulWOW!!! Where do I start? Well, I listened to this using Audible and man oh man was it epic!! The narrator, Natalie Naudus, was ingenious with her portrayals of each character. She was so good that I never had to question who was speaking at any given time and she brought to life every beloved persona with style. This book boasted excellent writing. There were loads of scenarios that were hard to envision though. Deep concepts with sweeping, unfathomable grandeur. How do you picture eating moons and spitting out galaxies? Being so large that whole solar systems are dwarfed? Shifts and metamorphosis in and out of dimensions and through a galactic network, called the Cloud? Where bodies are no longer necessary and the matter of having a soul is directly linked to ones ability to connect with and manipulate the Cloud? The Character Development was beautific, rich. The world Development was immense, extremely confusing at times yet so dynamic I felt like I lived this life in this place with these characters. I know them so well as to be affected by the things that shaped them and terrified and in peril as they were...and they were in CONSTANT peril. There was absolute non stop action and it was unbelievably grand in scope and breadth. What was it all for?? For the liberation of all sentient beings of course. Was it worth it? Well you'll just have to see for yourself but as for my time and devotion? Heck yeah it was worth every nanosecond spent listening to this masterpiece. ~ Enjoy*** I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review ***

It starts strong, I was super excited to read a near future riches to rags to riches story... then time travel and space and magic and it loses me

Max Gladstone ability to describe the immense and awesome works just as well in this space opera as it does in stories of gods and lawyer-wizards. That Viv was the Empress didn't come as a surprise, although the exact details about the simulation did. All in all a very satisfying read.
