About this audiobook

"[Narrator Daniel Henning] fully commits to this tale, providing a nearly breathless and deliciously evil-sounding narration while also developing unique voices and presenting surprisingly layered characters." — AudioFile Magazine

“A black tide of perversity, violence, and lush writing. I loved it.” —Joe Hill

Debut author Jennifer Giesbrecht paints a darkly compelling fantasy of revenge in The Monster of Elendhaven, a dark fantasy about murder, a monster, and the magician who loves both.

The city of Elendhaven sulks on the edge of the ocean. Wracked by plague, abandoned by the South, stripped of industry and left to die. But not everything dies so easily. A thing without a name stalks the city, a thing shaped like a man, with a dark heart and long pale fingers yearning to wrap around throats. A monster who cannot die. His frail master sends him out on errands, twisting him with magic, crafting a plan too cruel to name, while the monster’s heart grows fonder and colder and more cunning.

These monsters of Elendhaven will have their revenge on everyone who wronged the city, even if they have to burn the world to do it.

This book. Wow. I don't even know what to say about it exactly. It's dark, it's haunting, it's atmospheric. But it's also very, real, and raw, witty and snarky. The characters are complex and they're far from having the perfect moral compass, but that's what makes the whole story so interesting for me. We see them get consumed by revenge, sadness, lust, greed. The romance in this book is nothing I epected. It was humorous and tender, but also violent and melancholic. And before I forget, the prose is so damn beautiful?!?!? For a book with such a grim setting/plot, the author still managed to weave prose that is both equally disturbing and breathtaking (I don't know if that made sense, but that's what I thought. And I loved it! ?)

And!!! The audiobook narrator is amazing! They nailed it!

Fair warning to others: this book is gory and bloody. It has multiple graphic depictions of murders, and deaths, and wounds. If you're squeamish or it's not your cup of tea, this may not be the book for you.

I loved the world building I loved the relationship between Johann and Florian. A good and proper way to write a gay relationship without it feeling like it's shoehorned in or like it's suddenly to only noteworthy knowledge about both Johann and Florian. It felt super natural and it wasn't made a huge deal, it was written like one would write a straight relationship in books that aren't romance focused.
I disliked the ending, though. To me it didn't really make sense also wished for a different ending. I would have given 5 stars otherwise.

The world is much more compelling than the story itself. The relationship between the two main characters seemed sudden. I definitely feel like the world is built but the story doesn't pull me in as much as I had hoped. If someone told me this story took place in the Dishonored video game universe I would believe them.

What a haunting and bitter tale of the different forms monsters can take and seeing two of them see each other in more ways than one. I only wish it was longer, but to be honest the story is complete as it is.
