About this audiobook

When an Old Order Amish woman takes a job at a small-town pharmacy struggling to survive in a world of "big box" stores, her motive is to help her Plain community. But the advent of the holiday season brings an unusual mystery to the surface--and possibly love. Twenty-four-year-old Holly Zook lives a unique life for a young Amish woman. Years ago, her bishop allowed her to continue her education and become the lead technician for Greene's Pharmacy, an old-timey drugstore that looks out for the Amish community--a group largely without secure healthcare plans. She knows she can't marry and hold onto her professional job. She's Amish, and she can only have one or the other, so she spurns love and works toward addressing treatable diseases--like the one that claimed her father's life. As long as Holly continues to avoid Joshua Smucker, the one man who draws her like a warm hearth in winter, she should be fine. When something unexpected threatens Greene's Pharmacy, Holly and Joshua must work together to unravel what's happened and find the "missing" patient before the Board of Pharmacy shuts them down. As the snows of December arrive, with Christmas in the air, will Holly succumb to the generous spirit of the season?

What an incredibly good storyline, put together with such thought!

"The Christmas Remedy" relates the story of a very unconventional Amish woman who seeks a career outside of being a wife and mother. Both Holly and her sister Ivy are independent-minded women! Holly believes that her life's mission is to minister to the Amish people as a health care provider, working as a pharmacy tech in a small town pharmacy. A conflict occurs when the pharmacy owner Lyle has a stroke and his son Brandon arrives to help manage the pharmacy. Brandon's life takes a sudden new direction as he experiences small town life and caring for others.Another primary thread in this novel involves the growing relationship between Holly and an Amish farmer. They work together to solve problems related to the pharmacy, and then encounter new facets to their own personalities.I liked the portrayal of Holly as a strong and independent woman who seeks to break away from traditional Amish female roles. She does this with the knowledge and permission of her bishop. The characters are well-drawn and the plot moves forward at a pace that keeps the reader engaged. The ending wraps things up nicely, while portraying the personal growth experienced by all the main characters. The Christmas setting is incidental to the main action of the story. The Christian aspect is present but not overt or preachy.Readers who enjoy unconventional people who work to take care of each other will enjoy this different take on Amish romance.I received this book from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.

This Amish fiction book was a bit different from normal. This one showed that not all Amish are as strict as others. I was happy to see this. I love all the characters in the story and love the whole story idea. I could not put this book down. I loved the romance and the problems that Holly had to overcome. I received a copy of this book from Waterbrook and Multnomah for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Not your typical young Amish woman, Holly feels a calling to help her Amish community with their health needs. She was given permission to get her GED in order to take nursing classes to be an LPN. She works in the town’s pharmacy and has no plans to marry. But no matter how well-planned a life is, something is bound to happen to upset those plans. In this case, it is a young Amish man named Josh. Still, Holly will not give up her dream, even if it means giving up Josh. This co-authored book is an interesting departure from a typical Amish story in that Holly has more than an eighth-grade education and her district allowed her to have that and more. How it all comes about and how the young couple work out their differences, as well as plot involving the problems the pharmacy faces, make for an entertaining and delightful Christmas tale.

Heartwarming might be an overused word in describing books, but it is spot on in its description of The Christmas Remedy by the writing duo of Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall. I’ve already read a number of Christmas-themed novellas this year, but I have to say this one is my favorite so far. Filled with lovable characters and set in a charming town, The Christmas Remedy shares a message of community and family that is just right for holiday reading. Recommended.Holly Noelle is an unusual Amish woman. Determined to make a difference in her community, she pushes what is expected for women. But Holly is never rebellious or disrespectful in bringing some modern ways into her Plain community. As a pharmacy tech she is in the unique position to make healthcare a top priority for her friends and family. Joining in her plans is her boss Lyle Greene, pharmacist and owner of the local drugstore. A crisis occurs, though, to derail and perhaps undo all of Holly’s work. The characters are front and center in The Christmas Remedy. I loved that both Amish and English rang true. The setting of the little town of Raysburg, Pennsylvania and the surrounding countryside is far from the bustle and busyness of the big city, but is perfect for a story that centers on the importance of relationship. Romance is part of several characters’ stories and develops naturally and sweetly. And there’s a bit of a mystery for the characters and the reader to unravel. Characters also discover God’s plans for their lives, even as it leads in surprising directions. All in all I loved The Christmas Remedy. A quick read, it was perfect for snuggling up with in front of the fireplace.Recommended.Audience: adults.(Thanks to the authors for a complimentary copy. All opinions expressed are mine alone.)

A different Amish story, and a young woman who lives her faith, but willing to forego love and family to help her fellow man. While she is willing to sacrifice all, someone has the opposite in mind and is sabotaging the local pharmacy, but who and why? This story is a great collaboration between these two authors, and when the last page is turned, I still wanted more, and my mind was putting conclusions to maybe other romances.I loved how so many pulled together to find out answers to what happened, and if they will be able to save the much-needed pharmacy, or if the owner will have to retire due to health reasons. So many questions, but yes there are answers here, and a sweet enjoyable read.I received this book through the Publisher Waterbrook, and was not required to give a positive review.

The Christmas Remedy by Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall is An Amish Christmas Romance. Holly Noelle Zook has an unusual profession for an Amish woman. She is a pharmacy technician at Greene’s Pharmacy in Raysburg, Pennsylvania and studying for admission to nursing school. Holly wants to bring better health care to the people in her community. She wants to make sure they have access to medication and doctors. Holly is determined that what happened to her father ten years ago will not happen to anyone else. Holly is aware that to achieve her goals she must sacrifice having a husband and children since Amish woman quit working once they get married. Holly returns to Greene’s one morning after her deliveries to find Joshua Smucker standing outside. She enjoyed socials and other youth events with him for six months until he began to get serious. Holly is attracted to him, but she will not give up her goals. Inside the pharmacy, they find Lyle Greene on the ground after suffering a stroke. Lyle’s son, Brandon, who is close to becoming a licensed pharmacist, moves home to help care for his father until he is back on his feet again. Lyle and Brandon do not have the best relationship, and Brandon does not plan on working at Greene’s after graduation. He wants to work at a large chain pharmacy where he can earn more money. Then the pharmacy board inspector pays a visit bringing a serious matter to their attention. Holly and Joshua with help from Brandon and Graham have six weeks to resolve the problem. If they do not succeed, the community could lose Greene’s Pharmacy forever. The Christmas Remedy is a unique Amish story. Holly Zook is a spunky, intelligent and determined woman with one goal in mind. She is a progressive thinker for a baptized Amish woman. Holly is willing to give up a future with Joshua to achieve it. But is there another way? Brandon is estranged from his father, and he plans on working at a large chain pharmacy to earn a bigger paycheck. Time at Greene’s Pharmacy and in Raysburg gives Brandon a different perspective. I found The Christmas Remedy to be well-written with with a lovely small town. The thoughtful characters suited the story. The author explained Holly and Brandon’s motivations, and we see how circumstances as well as time can alter their viewpoint. I like the mystery that is included. It adds more interest and depth to The Christmas Remedy. Readers get to see how the Amish view healthcare and how they manage without insurance. I have insurance and can still barely afford to visit a doctor with the high co-pays. Many Amish prefer herbal remedies over modern medicine. Holly wants to educate the Amish on their options and know when to visit a doctor. Preventative care is important to staying healthy and finding a serious illness in time. Readers also get to learn more about pharmacy operations. They are governed by rules and regulations just like any business except they have more oversight and reporting (the laws vary from state to state as well). There is Christmas tidings and romance as well in The Christmas Remedy. I hope we see more Amish books like The Christmas Remedy with females in unique professions. Cindy Woodsmall and Erin Woodsmall created an intriguing Amish novel in The Christmas Remedy.

The Christmas Remedy by Cindy Woodsmall, and her daughter-in-law, Erin Woodsmall, is an exceptional Amish story. Greene’s Pharmacy, in the heart of Amish communities, is the focus of their story. Englishers (non-Amish) who own Greene’s Pharmacy, understand and help work around the Amish people’s reluctance to use prescription medicine.Holly Zook convinces her bishop to allow her to complete school past the 8th grade and work toward a pharmacist degree, to help her community, with the understanding she quit work when she marries.Joshua Smucker, an Amish man from a neighbor community, is drawn to Holly. However, she keeps him at arm’s distance as she wants to keep her job.I enjoyed the story for many reasons. I learned a lot about how pharmacies function, the rules they must follow and consequences for non-adherence, and I rediscovered the magic of chickens that lay a variety of different colored eggs. The people were authentic, and their stories plausible. Though the strictness of the Amish is sometimes hard to understand, I appreciate their adherence to their beliefs. It makes their willingness to deviate in compelling cases more admirable.Although a novella, the story encompasses plenty of territory- suspense, complicity, romance and philanthropy. The Christmas Remedy is a heartwarming story, with lots of winter and Christmas imagery providing an enjoyable way to spend time curled up with a blanket or afghan, something hot to drink (like Dr Pepper with a small splash of lemon juice!) and a few hours to absorb the charm of Christmas.I received the book from the authors and WaterBrook Multnomah. However, I was under no obligation to post a review. #PRHpartner
