About this audiobook

Everyone knows how all those fairy tales go. The princess gets beautiful, nabs her prince, falls instantly in love, lives happily ever after and leaves her evil stepsisters in the dust.

But what happens when you're the ugly stepsister and your obnoxiously perfect-read pretty, smart, and, worst of all, sickeningly nice-stepsister is dating the charming, tall, devastatingly handsome guy you've had a thing for since you were nine years old?

Quirky, artistic and snarky Mattie Lowe does not lead a charmed life. Her mother is constantly belittling her on Skype. Mercedes, the school mean girl, has made it her personal mission to torment Mattie. But worst of all? Her stepsister Ella is the most beautiful, popular girl in school and is dating Mattie's secret longtime crush, Jake Kingston.

Tired of being left out and done with waiting for her own stupid fairy godmother to show up, Mattie decides to change her life. She'll start by running for senior class president against wildly popular Jake.

Ella can keep her Prince Annoying. Mattie's going to rule the school.

And no one, not even a cute and suddenly flirty Jake, is going to stop her.

Author

Sariah Wilson

Bestselling author Sariah Wilson has never jumped out of an airplane or climbed Mount Everest, and she is not a former CIA operative. She has, however, been madly, passionately in love with her soul mate and is a fervent believer in happily ever afters—which is why she writes romances like the End of the Line novels, the Royals of Monterra series, and the #Lovestruck novels. After growing up in Southern California as the oldest of nine (yes, nine) children, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a semi-useless degree in history. She currently lives with the aforementioned soul mate and their four children in Utah, along with three tiger barb fish, a cat named Tiger, and a recently departed hamster who is buried in the backyard (and has nothing at all to do with tigers). A very cute book that left me with warm fuzzy feelings, and made me wish (for the first time since high school) I were the heroine of my favorite teen romance movies.

Even if I am older than the intended audience this retelling of Cinderella was fun to read, engaging and moving at time.

Originally reviewed at Witchmag's Boekenplank*I received a free copy as part of the blog tour in exchange for my honest opinion*This was a very nice and light book that I enjoyed reading. It’s not the usual story where a female protagonist is so shy that she’s only able to glance at her crush from afar, on the contrary! Mattie has no problem to say exactly what she thinks of Jack. Even though she as a hard time breathing and can’t stop staring when he is near, even when he uses his most radiant smile, if she doesn’t want to, or thins he’s doing something he shouldn’t, she says so. And that’s something Jack never has encountered before ^^ And something I really liked a lot ^^This book also features one of the nicest sisters ever. What Ella isn’t willing to do for Mattie! That’s why I wasn’t exactly thrilled at the beginning when Mattie gives her list of Grievances. The things she said… One good conversation with Ella and most of her Grievances would probably have been solved. On the other hand, I have a great sis myself, so I also understood a bit how she felt ;). Still, talking and explaining how you feel is essential in any relationship. Therefore I was glad to read that Mattie finally realizes this too. Ella is a very sweet and über nice gal and that’s just the way she is. It’s not something she’s doing deliberately, it’s in her blood. She’s born with it. And that should not make you keep her at a distance. So I was glad to see that the two sister grew closer and closer ^^Mattie, too is a great character to read about. She’s got lots and lots of great remarks and one liners. And made me giggle quite a lot throughout the book. Her mind is a great place to be ^^ I also admired her for going against Jake instead of just giving in. And she really persevered! There was only one small relapse when she believed the evil words of a jealous viper, which disappointed me a bit. You know that she is a viper and you still believe her? After all this don’t you know better? But oh well, everyone has lessons to learn. And the ending made more than up to it. It was soooooo cute. It made me fall in love with Jake too and wish someone did something like that for me too. *deep sigh*Conclusion3 HEARTS. It was a real entertaining book to read. It was awesome to be in Mattie’s mind with her quote’s and observations. This book made me giggle a lot. I’m also glad that this wasn’t a standard story, where the hero finally notices the heroin and everything goes great from there. Nope, this time the hero has some work to do before he’s allowed to get to the heroin. And I loved it ^^ It also has great bonding between two sisters, which I totally understand, I have a sister like that too. All in all a good and enjoyable read!

A good YA book that's geared more for younger readers. Tilly's insecurities really struck with me though, very well described.

Mattie [Tilly] does have a beautiful, sweet, giving step-sister, Ella. She feels like she lives in her shadow, can never be good enough.Mattie is very much in "love", with Ella's boyfriend Jake. She is hounded by the class bully...a two car named girl, Mercedes Benz. What a stinker that girl is.You will feel like your back in High School, and rooting for the good ones! Mattie is a modern day Goth. Her Mother, whom she does not live with or really see, keeps in touch with her by Skype. You wanted to disconnect her whenever she called!!This is a modern day Cinderella story, and I wish I could look at some before and after pictures. Coming from a privileged background does not mean happiness. Be ready for a really good captivating read.I received this book through The I Am A Reader, Not A Writer Blog Tour, and was not required to give a positive review.

Review:Ella is smart, beautiful, charming and talented with the most gorgeous guy in school as her boyfriend. Mattie on the other hand has the brains and the talent but unlike her well loved stepsister Mattie keeps everyone at an arms distance preferring to blend in rather than stand out. Now a senior and Sick of being an outsider looking in Mattie decides to take the bull by the horns and make her Senior year the best ever with or without Ella's help.I loved Ella and Mattie. Mattie thinks Ella has this perfect life and because of that has this hilarious list of reasons she dislikes her. Mattie's inner dialogue regarding Ella is one of the best parts of the book, so misguided though! It is funny how we perceive without knowing and when Mattie comes to the realization that maybe she was a bit er stubborn and foolish before I felt so proud of her character!. Ella on the other hand just wants to be close to her sister but the wall Mattie has built up has made it impossible for her to do so without feeling like she's intruding in her personal space. Lots of miscommunication between these two but the way it resolves makes me happy. I also really enjoyed Mattie's friend Trent he was super sweet, quirky, bad boy exterior fluffy interior type of guy. Jake might've ruled the school so to speak but I'm all Team Trent!!The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back *swoon* how I love thee. I'm admittedly not a big contemporary reader but the moment I saw this book I knew it would be mine! Fun, flirty and fabulous The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back reminds me so much of all those cheesy high school drama-comedies from the late 90's early 00's. If you've ever seen She's All That this sorta reminded me of the premise except this one is much, much, much more enjoyable and this is coming from a fan! It's super hard not spoiling this book for you. I could gush on and on about it but then you'd have no reason to read it for yourself and trust me when I say you should read this one!Overall, The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back was definitely worth reading. I loved the world, the characters and the writing. As stated above somebody should make a movie out of this. With the books broad appeal it would be a hit not only with Teenagers but Adults as well which is why I will be rating The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back ★★★★★.

Life’s not always fun and games when you’re the ugly stepsister. Mattie Lowe is sick of her perfect, beautiful, and (worst of all) genuinely nice stepsister. Not only is she more popular than Mattie; she’s also dating the boy Mattie’s had a crush on since she was nine years old. Fortunately, Mattie’s not the sort of girl to take things lying down and when she finally talks to her stepsister, it might turn out they have more in common than she thinks.I was a little nervous this book would be too light, too fluffy, or too cliche (the cover is just so pink!) but I want to read more new authors (new to YA in this case) and the book was already starting to get good reviews on goodreads. Well, let me assure you… it deserves them! This book amazed me by avoiding all the pitfalls so many romances with ‘strong heroines” fall into. Mattie isn’t just a strong heroine when the guy she likes isn’t around; she’ll stand up for herself with him as much as anyone else! Mattie was also less cliche and more well developed than a lot of other characters, with unique interests like manga and Jane Austen. The other characters in the book were all clearly based on high school stereotypes, but a lot of the main characters also got more fleshed out than is typical and I thought they felt very real. And there’s no insta-love! She’s known this guy forever and likes him for the kindness she’s observed, as well as his good looks.I think what I liked most about this book is that it reminds me of 10 Things I Hate About You, just for a younger crowd. It’s not quite the same plot, but it shares all the qualities that make me love the movie so much. One we’ve already touched on is the heroine who really doesn’t let anyone push her around. Another is Mattie’s narration – she’s fun, she’s serious, she’s snarky, and she just has a great personality. Also, the love interest isn’t the type of person you’d imagine the main character dating, but they work well when they get to spend more time together. Of course the plot is pretty predictable, the writing is clearly for a younger audience, and I wished the story were longer. But that’s the sort of book it is and it is absolutely the best at being the sort of book it is. I expected this book to be ok at best and instead I was swept off my feet by the wonderful personalities the author created. So when what you’re in the mood for is a fun, light read, I highly recommend that you pick this book up.

It's been quite a while since I've stayed up half the night to finish a book. I did that tonight. The Ugly Stepsister Strikes Back is a fun roller coaster ride. I wanted to hate Ella, I really did. I mean, who likes perfect people? Only other perfect people, right? Well, Ella may be the perfect stepsister, but Mattie is a hoot. I loved her from the first page. Both sisters (stepsisters) have their good and bad points. Ella is petite, blonde, popular and has the schools #1 hot guy as a boyfriend. Mattie is tall, artistic, and willing to fight for a cause. Mattie is jealous of Ella, who wouldn't be? Well, things aren't as they appear. Each is jealous of the other. The two learn to work together to achieve a goal. We do get our fair share of antagonistic characters. Mercedes Bentley....what do you think a girl named after two expensive cars would be like? If you said a witch with a capital "B", you are correct. We all knew someone like Mercedes in school. Mercedes' boyfriend Scott is no prize either. Both characters are easy to dislike. That brings us to Trent and Jake. Trent is a friend of Mattie's. A nice guy who lives in the periphery, easy going, stays out of the limelight. Jake, however, is the star jock of the school. The best looking guy, loved by all. He's Ella's boyfriend and the secret love of Mattie. This book has such amazing character development. We see the characters do a complete 360 during the course of the story. Characters you love from the beginning, or characters who grow on you. And yes, I wanted to hate Ella...Couldn't do it. She really is a great stepsister. There is a lot of tenderness throughout this book. Some strange relationships. The one I found most puzzling is Mattie with her mom...interesting but puzzling. Dad, aka Henry VIIIth, more than makes up for an emotionally bankrupt mother. We see warm, gentle relationships form. Overall, I loved this book. I would recommend it to anyone who would like a quick, fun read. Sariah Wilson, you've done a fabulous job with this book. Please, please...I want to read more. What happens to Mattie, Ella, Jake and Trent? I'm even interested in finding out what happens to Scott and Mercedes. (hint...I'd like to see them knocked down a few pegs). Looking forward to another book.
