About this audiobook

Twenty years past, in 1757, a young Redcoat, Reginald Aubrey stole a newborn boy-the lighter -- skinned of Oneida twins -- during the devastating fall of Fort William Henry and raised him as his own. No one connected to Reginald escaped unscathed from this crime. Not his adopted daughter Anna. Not Stone Thrower, the Native American father determined to get his son back. Not Two Hawks, William's twin brother separated since birth, living in the shadow of his absence and hoping to build a future with Anna. Nor Lydia, who longs for Reginald to be free from his self-imposed emotional prison and embrace God's forgiveness -- and her love.

Now William, whose identity has been shattered after discovering the truth of his birth, hides in the ranks of an increasingly aggressive British army. The Redcoats prepare to attack frontier New York and the Continentals, aided by Oneida warriors including Two Hawks, rally to defend it.

As the Revolutionary War penetrates the Mohawk Valley, two families separated by culture, united by love and faith, must find a way to reclaim the son marching toward them in the ranks of their enemies.

Author Lori Benton continues her thrilling and inspiring historical fiction series, “The Pathfinders” with Book 2, “A Flight of Arrows”. Set in the turbulent 1700’s of the American Frontier, history is brought to life with vivid detail and memorable characterizations. The first book in the series, “The Woods Edge” told the story of a fateful decision by a grief-stricken father to replace his dead child with one stolen from another family. Twenty years later, the world-changing events of the Revolutionary War have begun to take their toll, and the boy stolen from his Oneida heritage is now a young man. The truth of his legacy is profound, and he is torn in many directions. He is a man of two cultures—can he find his own true place? Can hope and healing be found amidst the tumult of war and uncertain times? Lori Benton writes beautifully told tales blending historical truth with unforgettable characterizations. What began with a stolen biracial baby and the rumble of impending revolution in The Wood’s Edge becomes a mix of reconciliation and all-out war in A Flight of Arrows by author Lori Benton. As battle lines are drawn and crossed, there’s aligning, clashing, and fighting among and between cultures, white and Native American. But love, grace, courage, and forgiveness also make their marks in this sequel. The author shapes key aspects of the returning characters’ collective journey in a style that’s beautiful and heartrending, bringing everything that they feel to life. And the use of Scripture here is brilliant: deft, spot-on, positively poetic. The read is dense, detailed, and contemplative, which I appreciate, since much of the story’s weight is found in the characters’ hearts and minds. Yet, like the preceding novel, a lot of this story seems to be “waiting,” positioning and repositioning, waiting for “something” coming. So with the exception of a few events that gripped me in Part One, I didn’t fully get into the novel until around the second half. Also, as there was much to resolve by the end, it almost felt like the book had too many endings, or perhaps too many concluding speeches. I think a story can only remain in its bittersweet closing stages for so long before it runs the risk of feeling a little too sentimental. Now, one does have to read the first book in The Pathfinders series to understand this one and to thoroughly realize its significance. It’s well worth the time, given the depth, poignancy, and redemption in this historical saga.__________________Blogging for Books provided me with a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review.

Title: A Flight of Arrows (The Pathfinders #2)Author: Lori BentonPages: 390Year: 2016Publisher: WaterBrook PressMy rating is 5 stars. This second book in the series begins right where book one, The Wood’s Edge, ends. I recommend reading book one first so you can get to know the characters, setting, storyline and time period. After learning his entire life has been a lie, William Aubrey leaves his home and family, feeling betrayed, angry and hurt to join the British forces to fight against the colonists in what will become the Revolutionary War. He joins the same division that will be attacking his own Native American family as well as the family whom raised him. What will he do now? He can’t desert as he has given his oath, right? Two Hawks and Anna are still in love, but face many obstacles. Lydia still loves Reginald, but has been shut out of his heart. Reginald has shut everyone out, except maybe his daughter Anna. He has received forgiveness from Stone Thrower and Good Voice over his actions twenty years ago, but he won’t let himself receive God’s forgiveness. There are many other happenings in this interesting tale, but they are best enjoyed when read for yourselves! The Native American family in this story heard the word of God from a missionary and took it to heart. The manner in which they act and react when faced with continued disappointment in the search for their missing son that has been going on for almost twenty years as well as their interactions with others shows their willingness to extend mercy, grace, forgiveness and one even makes the ultimate sacrifice. What great examples! The characters of Lydia and eventually Anna also demonstrate these traits, although readers will see Anna struggle with hurt, pride, rebellion and more. Readers will see the emotional struggles between various relationships all while the rebel Americans face invasion by the British, who are threatening their way of life as well as their very lives. The research and talent of the author really showed as that really brought the story and characters to life for me. I found reading about this time in American history interesting, and the story kept my attention from beginning until end. Kudos to you for a great story, Lori!Disclosure of Material Connection: I received one or more of the products or services mentioned above for free in the hope that I would mention it on my blog. Combining sweet romance with well-researched history and an honest depiction of the horrors of war, Lori Benton’s Flight of Arrows follows the trials and tribulations of tribespeople and townspeople, citizens and soldiers both American and British, as the Revolutionary War pillages and raids through fortresses, towns and villages. There’s a classic “two brothers on opposite sides” twist, enhanced by the fact that one brother has been raised white while the other grew up among his Native American family and clan... which gives rise to new questions of course: Can a man leave clan to love a clan-less, white woman? Is it easier to forgive crimes against yourself than those against your brother? Still worse, is it easier to forgive others or yourself? And can betrayal ever lead to love?Lyrical language, vivid descriptions, and great characters make this an absorbing tale, even if you haven’t read the author’s earlier novel, The Wood’s Edge. Christian faith threads into the story, unobtrusively, yet filled with symbolism and power. With no easy answers, the author finds solutions and relationships that work, forgiveness that hurts and heals, and surprising power, even in war’s darkest hours.Flight of Arrows is a beautiful novel of broken characters finding themselves, faith, love and hope in a broken world. It raises thought-provoking questions in a pleasingly unobtrusive way, never interfering with the storytelling, but leaving the reader to ponder at story’s end. I really enjoyed this book.Disclosure: Blogging for Books provided this book to me for free in exchange for an honest review.
