"In the past, for reasons I try to explain, I've often felt I had to be careful in public, like I was up on a wire without a net. Now I'm letting my guard down." —Hillary Rodham Clinton, from the introduction of What Happened
For the first time, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. Now free from the constraints of running, Hillary takes you inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules. This is her most personal memoir yet.
In these pages, she describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. With humor and candor, she tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. She speaks about the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.
She lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.
The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign and its aftermath—both a deeply intimate account and a cautionary tale for the nation.

Really appreciated hearing Hillary’s take on the 2016 election and her call to hope for the future.

I've really enjoyed listening to this incredibly brilliant woman telling us what losing the election was like and how she dealt with it.

A smart, capable leader. Inspiring to listen as she tells her story. Oh, what a better world (not just country) it would be of it weren’t for the gd electoral college.
Rating: 5Josh Grimes
I love how honest she is about her whole experience. She is so encouraging and this book gives me hope for the future.

This book feels like a cover up and preperation for another Presidential election. She lost because of her failure not by some Maverick. Thus is just shifting her blame from herself to another. Everybody knows that she acted like automaton .which led to her loss

Many hours of Hillary Clinton self flagellating and at not one point apologising for her monumental stuff up. At the beginning uses a quote from Harriet Tubman to make comparison to her drive to pursue power...
Some other examples of dribble, “Millions of people where counting on me and I couldn’t get the job done”. She is so self important it’s painful. Does she reflect meaningfully on the struggles in America, low wages, militant police, vote suppression, right wing extremism? She does not. She does make light of how the Russians are to blame for her election loss.
I have summarised the book to save you time.
Oh woe is me. I’ve worked so extraordinarily hard, sucked the toes of every rich and important person in this country. High fived many black children. Russia stole it from me. Did I mention how incredibly hard I worked. Perseverance, persistence... petulance, me, me me!

During my life, I've always known Hillary Clinton but never knew whether to like her or dislike her. During the 2016, I almost hated her. After listening to this book (I even bought a hard copy at some airport but never got to read it), I can confidently say I admire this person greatly. Please, give this book a hard try and finish it even if you feel like you despise this person. I promise it will help you understand both sides better and will bring some inner peace that is so rare these days.

This is a good friend of People who are not the virtual.

Good to hear Hillary's views about the election and the result that baffled many.

listening to hillary pretend to be some sort of strange mix between mother teresa of calcuta, martin luther king and mahatma gandhi was hilarious, five stars! !!

love it. Think how much better our country would be on the world stage with HRC. If it wasn't for that fool Comey we'd have her.
Rating: 5Lynette
Wow- I can't believe I finished this so fast, as I was not looking forward to rehashing the pain of the 2016 election. We lost the chance to elect an eminently qualified, compassionate and dedicated candidate. HRC did a great job of illustrating the pervasive and insidious sexism embedded in our culture. Voters squandered a national treasure - but we must keep going!
Rating: 5Terry Eckardt
bunch of lies total bull. if you only knew the Clinton's like those of us in the military serving in at the white house. you would be glad we escaped HRC's grasp.
Rating: 1Teresa
Whine, blame, deny, cry. Her failure is everyone else's fault.
Rating: 1Ron Smith
What a joke. Thank God she didn’t win. America would have been lost forever. #Hillary4prison

Imagine you have this really smart friend who won the popular vote. What happened?

Just a more self servicing book about herself.. Didn't like

This book made me mad and then really sad. I can’t believe we could have had someone so competent and stable as our president. But it is definitely a must read. She’s very honest about herself in it. So regardless of what all the haters are saying, she does recognize her faults and doesn’t put the blame on anyone. Anyone who says otherwise clearly did not read this.
Rating: 5Michael Dreelan
She’s a Clinton and a liar. She covered up rape for her slime bag husband and this book is a terrible hypocrisy, and collection of her seething hatred toward all her enemies.

Interesting to listen to Hillary’s side of the election #strongertogether
Rating: 4Chris
More rambling and blaming others by this sociopathic narcissist. The monotonous voice leaves much to be desired. The Clinton crime family needs to either go away or be put away. This book shows just how Hillary Clinton cannot accept blame for anything that she does or doesn't do. Everything is everybody ekses fault. Let me summarize for you. Here's what happened.... She lost. Because she wasn't a qualified candidate. Saved you hours. Thank me later today

Enjoyed very much. Wish she was our President! She would have been great!
Rating: 5Chetera Campbell
It is distasteful to hear her platitudes and insincerity in her push to make a buck off of losing the presidency. Sounds a lot like what we heard during the campaign, but it was sold as telling us how she lost.

It is so inspiring, heart melting and eye watering.Love you,Hillary

I enjoyed the book. It is part of a discussion about where we are and where we are going.

This book made me rethink about the effects of misogyny and sexism in my own and awakened my feminist. Hilary was witty and matter of factual I her reporting. Love all of it.
Rating: 5Tom Turner
This book was obviously ghost written. All she does is blame everything else besides herself. She chose not to campaign in Michigan and Wisconsin. Unlike the other comments say, she is not stable - on 9/11 before the election she had a seizure and was thrown into the back of a van like a side of beef. She is a liar. I really should give this 5 stars because I am so grateful this is what we got out of her running for president instead of something much more sinister. Trump could be the worst president in history and he would still be a better president than Clinton ever would have been.

The last chapter was uplifting. Gave me a feeling of hope
Rating: 4James Ang
Bad read she blames everyone except herself for her loss.
Rating: 1Howard Silvers
Great struggle and relegation, there was no way any candidate yet alone Hilliary could beat Trump and the Russians. A great candidate's relevation that history can repeat itself, and yet we can never learn from
it. We can only pray now together.
Rating: 5it. We can only pray now together.
