About this audiobook

When mystery novelist Hazel Martin receives a secretive letter from an old friend who suspects her relatives have murderous intentions, she packs her bags and heads to the country.

Tampered medications, symptoms of poisoning, and suspicious accidents all add up to attempted murder, and it's up to Hazel and her siamese cat Dickens to sniff out the clues. But with a house full of relatives who all have a motive, will Hazel be able to unmask the culprit before things turn deadly?

USA Today bestselling author Leighann Dobbs brings back the spirit of the Golden Age of mysteries in this classic whodunit set in the 1920s.

I liked the premise of this book, the characters and the writing when describing the house, grounds etc. Where it fell down for me was the - who could it be this one but he wasn't there or maybe he was that one but then again- this made up about 75% of the book. I know this has to be the case in a murder mystery but it was too much. There were also a few mistakes where the main character Hazel, says she 'must remember to ask Hazel who inherits' She means she must ask Myrtle. I guessed straight away who it was and I'm usually not very good at that. I have to admit after chapter 9, I skipped to the end. I will give the second in the series a go and hope it's not the same scenario. I do however love Leighann Dobbs series The Mystic Notch Mysteries.

The word “twee” should be revived for use in describing fake vintage murder mysteries like this. Look it up and, if twee is what you like, listen to this book.

So, so. The book couldn't keep my interest and I don't think it was the story, which was OK as far as the genre goes, as much as the voice was so irritatingly chirpy I couldn't listen for more than a few minutes at one go. I may look for a print copy to see if that's any better.

Forgettable. The author tried too hard to make sure we all know that Hazel is wealthy! And a writer! And is not interested in getting married again! And that her cat gives her clues! The writing was repetitive, and used expressions and behaviors that didn't fit in context.
