Descrizione

"Will remind historical fiction readers of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander and Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring…Lovers of meticulously researched historical fiction and time-travel narratives will be swept away by the spell of medieval Siena" (Library Journal, starred review).

"Winawer's debut is a detailed historical novel, a multifaceted mystery, and a moving tale of improbable love…Winawer has created a prodigious, vibrant tale of past and present that transports readers and fills in the historical gaps. This is a marvelous work of research and invention" (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

Equal parts transporting love story and gripping historical conspiracy, debut author Melodie Winawer takes readers deep into medieval Italy, where the past and present blur and a twenty-first century woman will discover a plot to destroy Siena.

Accomplished neurosurgeon Beatrice Trovato knows that her deep empathy for her patients is starting to impede her work. So when her beloved brother passes away, she welcomes the unexpected trip to the Tuscan city of Siena to resolve his estate, even as she wrestles with grief. But as she delves deeper into her brother's affairs, she discovers intrigue she never imagined-a 700-year-old conspiracy to decimate the city.

After uncovering the journal and paintings of Gabriele Accorsi, the fourteenth-century artist at the heart of the plot, Beatrice finds a startling image of her own face and is suddenly transported to the year 1347. She awakens in a Siena unfamiliar to her, one that will soon be hit by the Plague.

Yet when Beatrice meets Accorsi, something unexpected happens: she falls in love-not only with Gabriele, but also with the beauty and cadence of medieval life. As the Plague and the ruthless hands behind its trajectory threaten not only her survival but also Siena's very existence, Beatrice must decide in which century she belongs.

The Scribe of Siena is the captivating story of a brilliant woman's passionate affair with a time and a place that captures her in an impossibly romantic and dangerous trap-testing the strength of fate and the bonds of love.

An interesting story, some history, life in 1300 Siena, and a reader who can actually pronounce Italian correctly (there is a lot of Italian in the book)!

Love Italy and loved seeing it in the days of old

One of the best historical fiction I have ever read, there are many twists and turns. Can’t wait to see what Dr Melodie Winawer writes next!

Very entertaining historical fiction. I highly recommend it. I enjoyed the history and the story.

Marvellous book and well worth your time. Treasure of a story and the history feels so vivid in description.

This is the best book I have ever read! In fact, I listened to the audio version, and this made it even better. It’s beautifully narrated and the narration adds to the beauty. I felt as though I was living in 14C Siena and thought about the history, the events of the time, the art, the buildings even whilst going about my day to day. It felt particularly pertinent that it was during the Black Death, which of course threw reflections on our current COVID-19 experience.
The balance between historical fact and fiction is enough to enable suspension of disbelief and inspire fascination, both with the time slip story but also with reality. What was mediaeval life really like? What’s it like to be a neuro surgeon?
I struggle to find any criticism but if there is any, perhaps the very early chapters could be tightened up a little - I found myself getting a bit lost and having to re-listen in a few places., and it seemed to be slower than the rest of the book. But this in no way detracted from the novel.
Please write another one and use the same narrator!

WOW- This novel and her reader are so well matched it is uncanny. A brilliant mystery, beautifully balanced with historical descriptive, and interesting, credible characters. I wanted this to go on and on. Thank you for giving us this creation.

I loved the story! Yes, time travel is fantastical, but I allowed myself to be caught up in the beautiful love story set in medieval times against the background of the plague and antagonism between Florence and Sienna. Pertinent to all now with the world in panic and fear of the Covid19 Pandemic. The writing felt visceral, I could smell the woolen clothing, the wax burning, the hustle and bustle of the markets. Audiobook was well read and characters totally believable. Highly recommended

Interesting storyline but not one I found captivating. At times it felt rambling and repetitive, and at other times too unreal to maintain itself as historical fiction.
