At the close of Peppermints in the Parlor by Barbara Brooks Wallace, it appears that everything is lost. In The Perils of Peppermints, Emily's aunt and uncle are off to India and she is stuck in New York, being sent to a boarding school. She's cast aside after the birth of her cousin.Although the setting is completely different, Emily recognizes the dreaded bowl of peppermints. She begins to suspect that the school's harsh rules and uneven treatment of its students is part of the same plot that left her family in ruin. With cunning and the help of her friend's cousin, she decides to get to the bottom. As last time I had trouble with the written dialect of the previous book, I chose to listen to this book on audio. The dialect problems are still there, although being now set in New York, I found them less of a distraction since I'm less familiar with the dialects of the Five Burroughs.
