About this audiobook
A Wall Street Journal bestseller
Wildlife biologist Mac Barrett avoided his hometown of Scarlet Falls for years—too many bad memories. But when he receives the news that his father is dying, he rushes home only to discover he’s too late. Shaken, Mac retreats to his remote cabin seeking peace and solace. Instead, he crashes his jeep to narrowly avoid running over the naked body of a woman lying in the road. Even more disturbing, when he regains consciousness, the body is gone.
Police detective Stella Dane wants to believe Mac, even if his story about the vanishing body seems far-fetched. But when Mac’s description matches the missing woman she’s been searching for, it raises a disturbing question: How does a dead body disappear?
Mac and Stella will have to work together to find the answer and catch a psychotic kidnapper—and quickly. The killer has a deadly message to send, and the case is about to become personal…

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mac Barrett is back in Scarlet Falls because his father has died. He left the Amazon jungle with a bullet wound in his side and a dead partner. Besides the emotional stress of dealing with is feelings about his father, he also walks into a crime scene. While on the way to his cabin, he swerves to avoid hitting a naked woman on the road. When he regains consciousness, she is gone. Stella Dane believes him when he tells her about the woman. She had just that day been called in because a woman was reported missing. Someone is killing young women and leaving their staged bodies in public places. What they seem to have in common besides a general physical resemblance is that they were all dealing successfully with drug addictions. There are a number of suspects from the creepy guy who hangs around outside the church where Narcotics Anonymous meets to the husband of victim number two.Stella and Mac work together to try to find out who the killer is. Along the way, they fall in love. When a young friend of Stella's - another former addict - disappears, pressure increases to find the killer before he kills again. This is a very enjoyable romantic suspense series. It was good to catch up with Mac's brother and sister and see how the relationships that began in earlier books are progressing.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Mac Barrett has never spent much time at home. His current assignment has him in Brazil researching otters, however he has another job that he has been keeping a secret from his family. While in Brazil, his partner is killed and even though he is injured, he must return home to face his father's impending death. Stella Dane has been attracted to Mac since she met him, but his infrequent visits have made it difficult to connect with him, but this time he is home dealing with his past while Stella investigating the death of a local woman who was tortured before she was killed. When a second woman turns up dead, it becomes obvious that there is a serial killer in Scarlet Falls.Seconds to Live is the third book in the Scarlet Falls series and includes an interesting serial killer mystery as well as a nice romance between the two likable main characters. While there isn't a strong connection to the characters, we do get good development of their backstories and lots of clues and evidence to keep the plot moving forward throughout the book. The other Barrett siblings also appear and play a part in the story as well. Overall, Seconds to Live is an enjoyable entry in the Scarlet Falls series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the third book in the Scarlet Falls Trilogy and it is Mac Barrett's story as well as Stella Dane's story. Stella is a newly promoted detective and she is on the case of missing and murdered women. The first victim was a highschool friend of Stella's. She does not want the second kidnapped woman to become a murder victim, but time is running out. Meanwhile, Mac returns home from the jungles of South America after being almost killed by drug runners. He is also told that his father is dying and if he wants to see him one last time, he needs to get home. Stella and Mac begin to rekindle a friendship they started in the first book of this series and they begin to fall in love. As Stella finds herself in a rush against time to find the third victim, the Barrett family come to her aid in style.
Mac and Stella both have to deal with guilt and reveal secrets while working together to solve two murders and find their missing friend. Mac also needs to decide on whether he will stay in Scarlet Falls and live the type of life he never thought he wanted. The main characters are written with just the right balance of flaws and personal growth. This is a suspenseful story and it kept me guessing until the end when the culprit was finally revealed to the reader. hot romance and suspense that keeps you guessing. I have enjoyed this romantic suspense series. More suspense, with just enough romance to add to the story and not detract. I like watching the relationship between Stella and Mac grow amidst all the danger that surrounds them. This is a series, but this and any of the books can be read as a standalone, however I would recommend reading them in order. I enjoyed listening and reading along with this book from Kindle Unlimited. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I did not realize this book was part of a series (Scarlet Falls) when I started reading it. The book was not confusing without reading the other books. I can't wait to read the first two books in the series. I really enjoyed the writing style and was hooked as soon as I started reading the book. The story moves at a fast pace. I had a slight inkling on who the killer might be and I ended up being correct. I loved the main characters of the book Mac and Stella. I will say Mac had a strange upbringing, he was raised by a paraplegic father, The Colonel, who taught his children survival skills. Not normal skills, unless you count throwing your children into a pool blindfolded with their hands tied a normal family activity. Mac and his siblings always joked they would survive a zombie apocalypse. Mac returns home after studying river otters in the jungle and also happens to be a secret DEA Agent when he gets news that his father is near death. At the same time Stella is trying to solve the murder of a woman who also happens to be a friend from high school. Then another woman goes missing and Mac lends his help to Stella. A romance blossoms between Stella and Mac. Then another woman goes missing along with Mac. The question is will Stella be able to save them in time? I definitely recommend the book. There's suspense, some action and a little romance. I can't wait to read more books in the series and catch up on the ones I missed.
