    On special assignment from Rome, Detective Nic Costa, along with his partner, his boss, and a dogged pathologist named Teresa Lupo, is getting in the way of progress, Venetian-style. They know that Uriel Arcangelo and his wife were murdered. They know that a predatory Englishman must be a suspect, as is the family of the murdered woman. And while everyone wants the Roman cops to give up and go home, they can't - because a matter of desire, death, and lies has just turned murderously on one of them...

    Former Sunday Times journalist David Hewson is well known for his crime-thriller fiction set in European cities. He is the author of the highly acclaimed The Killing novels set in Denmark, the Detective Nic Costa series set in Italy and the Pieter Vos series in Amsterdam. The Killing trilogy is based on the BAFTA award-winning Danish TV series created by Søren Sveistrup and produced by DR, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation. While he lives in Kent, Hewson's ability to capture the sense of place and atmosphere in his fiction comes from spending considerable research time in the cities in which the books are set: Copenhagen, Rome, Venice and Amsterdam.

      I enjoyed this book. Easy to read, likeable characters and a good ending. Another great from Mike Gayle.

      Dave and Izzy are in their early 30s, happily married, living in London, and both working for different magazines. They hadn't planned on having children now, if ever, but when Izzy turns up pregnant, they are shocked, then thrilled. What follows is a roller coaster of events and emotions which leave both of them reeling. I can't say much more than that or I will spoil the book for those who want to read it. It is an original story with good writing, but I felt it got a little bizarre and unrealistic in the second half of the book so was somwhat of a letdown.

      One of my favourite authors, but definitely not one of my favourite books of his. I still read it in a single day. It's easy, fast-paced and natural-sounding. I just didn't connect well with the characters. I would have loved a bit more surrounding than there was, but everybody felt very real and there. Highly recommended.
