Kayden and Jake soon realize that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is on to them. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5A bucket list trip to Alaska was in the works when I selected as reading “research” Silenced by Dani Pettrey. Her 5-book Alaskan Courage is a great introduction to Alaska for fans of romantic suspense. Silenced is the 4th book in the series and features McKenna sibling Kayden and Jake Cavanaugh, a man she once distrusted, but has growing feelings for. A death in the climbing community pairs the two in an investigation of a possible murder. As they get closer to the truth of what really occurred, threats dog their steps. While Silenced can be read as a standalone novel, the other McKenna siblings featured in the series play a part, both in the backstories as well as the current action. Pettrey has created a tight knit family of siblings and their significant others that readers will love. The action-packed plot kept this reader on her toes — I didn’t anticipate the many twists and turns Pettrey throws at Kayden and Jake. And as in all of her books, romance is a big part. That’s great news for those who love romance mixed in with their suspense. Faith plays a big part in the Pettrey’s books, and her characters reflect her worldview. God is in control, we have only to trust Him. The only negative was that I felt things wrapped up a bit quickly and neatly, but I loved the way that the case was resolved. The audio narrative was well done, with good pacing and tone.If you are looking for a fast-paced romantic suspense for a weekend getaway or staycation, Silenced is a great choice.Recommended.Audience: adults.(I purchased this book from Audible. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Book Four of the Alaskan Courage series by Dani Petri does not disappoint. Kayden McKenna’s rock climb turns into deadly intrigue as she makes a startling discovery. To solve the mystery, she engages love interest, Jake Westin, to figure it out. The dance around their romance is as compelling as their attempt to stay ahead of their pursuers. As you read, see if you can figure out these clues to the mystery:• Is there something amiss with the chalk the climber used?• Are we dealing with an accidental death or murder?• Is Stuart Anderson’s present merely to comfort Vivienne, the grieving widow?• In what way did the loss of Jake’s wife, Becca, affect his relationship with Kayden? This reader found it odd that Kayden, an expert climber, but not a policeman, was permitted to serve a warrant and interrogate suspects. There seemed to be a disconnect between the intrigue set up in the first half of the book and what ensued in the second. This reader was not acquainted with the three books that preceeded Silenced, but that did not diminish my ability to follow the story and engage with the characters. Jake, back in the saddle as a deputy, haunted by his wife’s death, and brimming with love for Kayden, is the strongest character.Dani Pettry is an established author of inspirational romantic suspense. This is light reading with minor flaws. If you like a good nail-biter with well-developed characters and a twisty plot that keeps you guessing, Silenced is for you.Bethany House Publishers supplied the advance review copy for my unbiased opinion.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This is another intense drama that captures your interest and makes it hard to put down once you start. I stayed up late to finish because I just couldn't put it down. It is book four in the "Alaskan Courage" series and although you could read it as a stand alone, I do not recommend it because the books preceding it are all just as good and you get to know and love the McKenna family so well by reading the other stories first.Kayden McKenna is an avid rock climber, but she wasn't expecting to find a dead body on the ledge she has climbed up to. Now the family, the Sheriff and good friend Jake Westin Cavanagh will need to find out what happened to this climber. Jake and Kayden have worked together before and although Jake has fallen in love with Kayden, he isn't sure how she feels about him. Kayden is a very independent lady who has real issues with letting anyone help her or get to close to her. The chemistry is there, but it will take time for them both to admit their feelings for each other. In the meantime they are searching for a killer, but will find that that isn't the real danger that threatens them. A story that is full of faith, love for family, danger, mystery and the realization that "God doesn't promise the way will be easy, far from it, but He promises to carry us through, to give us the courage and grace we need when we need it. He most often doesn't change the circumstances, He changes us." (A favorite quote from this story.)Sit back and enjoy catching up on all the McKenna siblings in this gripping story. You will be glad you did. A special thanks goes to Bethany House for giving me this story to read for my honest review.File Size: 4205 KBPrint Length: 336 pagesPublisher: Bethany House Publishers (April 29, 2014)ASIN: B00GHXROW6
