About this audiobook

I Wasn't Strong Like This When I Started Out, a collection of true narratives, reflects the dynamism and diversity of nurses, who provide the first vital line of patient care. Here, nurses remember their first "sticks," first births, and first deaths, and reflect on what gets them though long, demanding shifts and keeps them in the profession. The stories reveal many voices from nurses at different stages of their careers: One nurse-in-training longs to be trusted with more "important" procedures, while another questions her ability to care for nursing home residents. An efficient young emergency room nurse finds his life and career irrevocably changed by a car accident. A nurse practitioner wonders whether she has violated professional boundaries in her care for a homeless man with AIDS, and a home care case manager is the sole attendee at a funeral for one of her patients. What connects these stories is the passion and strength of the writers, who struggle against burnout and bureaucracy to serve their patients with skill, empathy, and strength.

Fantastic story collection from nurses who practice in all kinds of different specialties. Many of these stories deal with how the nurses started their careers as novices and what helped them grow into the competent nurses they are today. A very encouraging read that reminded me of why I chose nursing. Highly recommended!

An excellent insiders look at what it takes to be a nurse. These are heart-felt stories, filled with uncertainty in the beginning, then ending with conviction. These stories helped me to see the dedication nurses feel toward their patients. It's not just a job, it's a calling.

A very good read from perspectives of nurses not just in the United States. I loved learning about the nursing customs of other countries

Validating, raw and real. A real look into nursing and how it impacts those who practice and the people around them. As a RN student, this was so interesting to listen to and hear from veterans in the field about how the craziness of the job is so rewarding, draining, amazing and heartbreaking.

This book validates every single feeling I had starting off as an ICU nurse I thought I was crazy but this book validates it’s only part of the job
