      Journalist Patrick Bannister’s mother has died, he is not sure why he decided to attend her funeral. There are references to child abuse – emotional and physical that he suffered at her hands. While at the house he sees a box of books he hasn’t seen before, so decides to take as a keepsake.When looking through the box he finds, information about a kidnapping, a disturbing letter from his Uncle Warren to his mother and a St Christopher’s medal. This discovery sets him on the path to research a 30 year old kidnapping.Excellent suspense, I could barely keep myself from turning to end before reading the entire story! You’ll find monsters, yes more than one! Lies. Fear. This is a new author for me, one I will read again.41

      I was told this could also be considered a psychological horror so I was really disappointed. This was just your basic mystery/thriller and was very predictable and I never figure these things out. I also found the back story to be irritating and whiny. Fast read.

      This book is considered in the genre of psychological thriller and might I add suspense to that. When you read this book, be careful to cement the character names and who they are in you mind as you read because it is easy to mix up the characters especially when one takes on the identity of another. My biggest beef about books is how authors choose to end them. Many times the endings are just not "satisfying." Andrew E Kaufman had the perfect ending; not one that meant everything was okay but it was just a good ending.

      Here is a snynopsis of the book:

      While going through his dead mother’s, (Jean), belongings, Patrick Bannister discovers shocking evidence that suggests she was responsible for the death of another of her children many years ago. Even worse, an innocent man might have gone to the electric chair because of Jean’s lies.

      This thrilling account is about a man who finds himself coming up against powerful forces that want the past to stay hidden. As Patrick tries to piece together the truth, he discovers that his own life is on the line. Can he discover the truth about who really killed the baby, and who helped cover it up and at the same time keep himself alive?

      Pretty good book, and I'll continue the series. Wasn't spectacular though and I guessed at the bigger reveals very early on, so it didn't pack the punch I think it was supposed to. Could have used a bit less of the back and forth between the present and back story. Back story was necessary, but it wasn't allowing the story to flow the way it could have. Still a good book and I'll see what the next one has in store.

      An engrossing first novel in a series of psychological suspense novels with an investigative journalist as the ain character. The plot here concerns his own family, as he uncovers a connection between a long-ago kidnapped child and his own abusive mother and politically-connected uncle.

      When I was about 2/3 of the way done with this book I started going back and forth on what I would rate it - sometimes, I think about this when I'm nearing the end of a story... However, you would think that I've read enough to know that the ending can make or break a book. I suppose you can take from my 5 stars that it ended pretty well.The story is told in alternating present and past chapters and it centers around an old, cold murder case. How it plays out will leave you stunned.And I love the whole storyline with the dog. <3

      The plot and premise of this book is good. It was entertaining and thrilling. However, it seemed that at times it was a bit...undeveloped. Parts of the book seemed not as well thought out and written than the rest of the book.

      Still overall it was a fun read that, while perhaps being predictable, was a good read. :)

      Who killed 3 year old Nathan. That's the questions Patrick Bannister, a crime reporter working for News World national magazine attempts to find out. What he uncovers is an intricate web of deceit, cruelty, and intrigue. I love how Bannister's own family history is woven so intricately throughout the story, and for good reason. I love his OCD - yeah I know, but read the book and you'll get it. I love the vicious dog he rescues. Actually, I loved everything about this book. Well written, intelligent and gripping.

      This book had my mind spinning from the very beginning. There are so many twists and turns along the way that it keeps you guessing. Patrick is a reporter for a nationwide audience. He eventually teams up with a local small town reporter in a quest to solve the decades old kidnapping and murder of one of the town's children. Leads are scarce, but every time they find something, witnesses and people who may have some answers are turning up dead. Somebody is also after him for resurrecting this case and now wants Patrick dead. It also seems like the murderer is always one step ahead of him. Finally, it looks like the mystery is solved, but Patrick and CJ may not live to tell it. Warning, this book will keep you up late at night. Highly recommended!       This book kept me grabbed me within the first couple of pages, and the riveting story line refused to let me come up for air. I finished this book inside of a day, and stayed up until after midnight to finish it. There is one plot twist that I guessed at early on, but there were many more that kept me guessing until the end. Even after this book concluded, I was still reworking all the nuances of the story for at least another hour, consequently losing even more sleep.

      Moves right along and has a plausible explanation at the end. Patrick Bannister has returned to his hometown for his mother's funeral. Having lived a cruel life with a psychotic mother, he discovers in her items a letter which suggests that she and his "uncle" had a hand in a kidnapping that took place more than thirty years ago. As he begins to unravel the mystery surrounding the young boy's kidnapping, he suddenly finds himself the hunted.

      I received this book from Librarything in exchange for an honest review.I have a backlog of books that I have to read and review and really was just trying to skim the first few pages of several books to see what I was in for. I started this novel and after about two pages, I was hooked. It is dark, many times frightening, crisply written and fast paced. I enjoyed getting to know the narrator, the other reporter that he meets, and the unveiling of his past at the same time as the mystery was unfolding. Well written and the pace never lets up.The reason I'm giving this book 4 and 1/2 stars instead of 5 is because after the mystery is introduced in the first two chapters, I knew the answer to the mystery. However, that didn't stop me from reading the rest of it! A must read for those who enjoy psychological thrillers!

      I hadn't read Andrew Kaufman's first novel, but I came across this one on Darcia Helle's blog and decided to check it out. I loved it from beginning to end and really had a problem putting it down. The action was fast-paced, the drama terrific, and the characters quite memorable. The twist at the end was unexpected and added so much to the entire story. Now I guess I've got to check out his first novel!

      WOW!!! This book is amazing. I could not put it down. I was drawn in from the moment it began and read it in 2 days. It is that good! I really like Andrew's writing style. The story progressed quickly with lots of twists and turns. It has been a LONG time since I have read something so good. I definitely recommend this and am going to read more of his writings.

      WOW!!! I started this book and was annoyed when I had to stop reading to sleep.A woman's child is taken out of his crib while she is getting the mail. A sex offender is tried and found guilty of his kidnapping and murder. The death of her son soon tares her sanity apart and she kills herself in the mental hospital.What if the man found guilty, wasn't? What if the child wasn't kidnapped? It seems that the more questions reporter Patrick Bannister asks the more danger he's in. He can't stop, he has to know what his family has to do with a murdered little boy

      Sometimes an author's first book is such perfection, you wonder if he/she is capable of creating another book that even comes close. Andrew Kaufman had no such problem with his second book. This novel of psychological suspense is a masterpiece. This story reached into the depths of my emotions, squeezed, and didn't let go. The main character is slightly damaged, fallible and lovable, with an inner strength that keeps him moving forward despite the challenges he faces at each turn. The plot moves at a good pace, with a few unexpected twists. While the subject matter is relatively dark and there is a bit of violence, there is not a lot of gore or strong language to make you flinch. The gasping you'll do will come from the way Kaufman steps into your mind and takes control.My only complaint is that it had to end.

      Incredible! I did not want to put this down at all and got annoyed when I had to. The family dynamic of the protagonist, Patrick, pulled me in right away and the mystery of their dynamic kept that pull strong. The characters were crisp and the dialogue believable. The pacing was amazing and I often found myself surprised by how much I had read without realizing it. I waited on pins and needles for this one to come out after reading While the Savage Sleeps. Mr. Kaufman has quickly become one of my favorite authors.
