About this audiobook

That Kevin Smith? The guy who did "Clerks" a million years ago? Didn't they bounce his fat ass off a plane once? What could you possibly learn from the director of "Cop Out"? How about this: he changed filmmaking forever when he was twenty-three, and since then, he's done whatever the hell he wants. He makes movies, writes comics, owns a store, and now he's built a podcasting empire with his friends and family, including a wife who's way out of his league. So here's some tough shit: Kevin Smith has cracked the code.  Or, he's just cracked.

Tough Sh*t is the dirty business that Kevin has been digesting for 41 years and now, he's ready to put it in your hands. Smear this shit all over yourself, because this is your blueprint (or brownprint) for success. Kev takes you through some big moments in his life to help you live your days in as Gretzky a fashion as you can: going where the puck is gonna be. Read all about how a zero like Smith managed to make ten movies with no discernible talent, and how when he had everything he thought he'd ever want, he decided to blow up his own career. Along the way, Kev shares stories about folks who inspired him (like George Carlin), folks who befuddled him (like Bruce Willis), and folks who let him jerk off onto their legs (like his beloved wife, Jen).

So make this your daily reader. Hell, read it on the toilet if you want. Just make sure you grab the bowl and push, because you're about to take one Tough Sh*t.

Author

Kevin Smith

I was born when Winston tasted good , like a cigarette should. We ran across a baseball field with my Dad to watch Jack Kennedy's motorcade . We were offered protection underneath our desks from Soviet warheads. A couple of years later, the motorcade made the fatal mistake of slowing to a crawl in Dallas . They got him. They. Anyway, I grew up a normal ,conflicted youth. I had the ability to go so deeply into a book, that it was real, it was a variation of the fugue state I entered when playing sports. The British Invasion blew my mind and saved me. Every few years they cook up a new excuse to slaughter young men and civilians. This one they called Vietnam. I thank God that I got a high number in the lottery and I thank and honor those who went and those who didn't return. The conflicted kid , became a conflicted adult . Fifteen years later , the grace of God pulled me from a booze and drug laced spiral. I married a sweet , sweet woman and we were blessed with a beautiful boy and a beautiful girl. I lucked out and ended up as a conductor on the railroad. Twenty-eight years and out. Now , I want to wrassle all those fragments of stories that have spun through my brain for years.

As someone who loves Kevin Smith, it's no surprise I enjoyed the book. He's a great storyteller and this translates well to books. It's a very interesting read, funny, uplifting and sad at times. He never shies away from being himself and it's nice to feel like you are being included on his journey in life. And as a dad, it's heartwarming to hear how he gushes about his daughter. One of my favorite parts of the book is the essay from his daughter. Why should the man ever care about critics again after that review?

One night, before going out, Kevin Smith asks his wife "Can I stare at your asshole while I jack off?"So depending on your reaction to that line, you can judge your potential interest in this tome.Kevin Smith is, uh, an interesting fellow. Well, what I can I say? He was one of the voices of a generation. You look at the nineties and people think Quentin Tarantino, Spike Lee, and Kevin Smith. The guy is, at heart, a storyteller. I could listen to him talk about Superman and the Giant Spider all day.And that's what this book is. You get to hear how he met his wife, the making/publication of Red State, the Southwest "too fat to fly" fiasco, the up and down relationship with The Weinstein Company. The nice thing about Smith is he's able to admit his wrongs and justify his rights. He never assumes he's the smartest guy in the room and always gets feedback on if he's showing his own ass (because that's easy to do when your content consists of stinkpalming stoners and Carlin-esque religion satire). The book is equal combinations of crudeness and heart, black humor and childlike wonder. It's a good book for insight on the Hollywood scene, especially for potential indie film-makers. And it gives more inspiration that "you can make it" than "this is how to make it" (which is really all luck more than anything).

    Read this in two sittings--

Behind the vulgarity, there's a sincerity in the writing that drew me in, as well as the view(askew) of a intelligent writer who really just puts it out there. Enjoyable read.

I’m a geek, a comic nerd, I love pop culture and so does Kevin Smith. Having grown up about the same time Kevin Smith did I can relate to his movies and many of the stories he wrote in this book. Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good is a glimpse of where Kevin has been and where he is going while also passing along so great advice for anyone that wants to enjoy life. That advice is simple, do what you love and enjoy yourself. It was also fun to read about the movies Kevin has made and how why he stopped making movies and turned to podcasting instead. Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good is a short and easy to read book that will make any geek or nerd smile a little and relate to the stories within.

This book was AWESOME!!!! I have always enjoyed Kevin Smith as a filmmaker and have watched a few YouTube videos of his Q&A's. So, I kinda knew what to expect. I decided to take the lazy route and listen to the audio book which lucky me was narrated by Kevin Smith! And he is awesome!! It is like having a little chat with him, sure you don't get to talk, but it is a great convo!

Who knew Kevin would be so insightful? Made me want to get off my duff and do more work with my art mostly because I do not have much of an excuse for not doing it. I feel anyone in the arts should check this book out because it is a rather inspiring kick in the pants from an unlikely source!

I loved the honesty and the general FU to the corporate machine that is the entertainment industry. It is great to hear someone else with the view that it is more important to share the art than fill the coffers.

I may have to add Kevin to my list of Directors I not so secretly crush upon. He may even be tied with Quentin Tarantino! Well, a close second cause really who can compete with QT?

Silent Bob always prolific when he chooses to use his words! It will be a sad day when he finally does hang up his director's cap!

Kevin Smith does not disappoint with his narration of his book. He talks about how he was able to get Red State green lit and how his idol Harvey W. turned out to be a giant a**hole. I always wanted to know more about the To Fat To Fly incident on Southwest Airlines and it did not disappoint. Give it a listen.

It's been 10 years since I watched my first Kevin Smith movie. Since then, I've seen all of his films, read all of his books and graphic novels, listened to hundreds of episodes of shows contained on the SModcast network and taken in two live shows. Therefore, it's fair to say that I'm a pretty big fan of his. With that information, it's hard to feel like I'm really reviewing this book given my massive bias. I'm going to give it a shot though.

I knew that even before I picked up this memoir/motivational book, I was going to be confronted with stories and events that I already know a great deal about. If anything, Smith is known by his fans for being incredibly transparent. So much so that no aspect of his life ever seems to be off limits for discussion (look for the chapter when he discusses - in detail - his sexual exploits with one Jennifer Schwalbach, his wife). Given that I generally enjoy going for long walks with my iPod (which I've renamed iSMod - I know, I know), I spend the majority of those long walks listening to him talk about everything from his recent physical (in incredible detail, mind you) to his life-altering obsession with Wayne Gretzky.

I already knew all about topics like the Red State development, the incident on South West and the story about his Dad's passing but he makes it all seem fresh. There's something to be said about his writing - it's pretty effortless.

Despite the fact that with the exception of a few select films in Clerks, Clerks 2, Chasing Amy and Red State, he's usually publically lambasted by critics for his poor efforts. When facing those oh so important opinions whenever he approaches a new direction in life, he often needs to find a way to remain positive.

After answering several questions on Twitter, he had the idea to write a full book dispensing his advice for those who seek it. A self-help or motivational book makes perfect sense for Smith, so it's a wonder he hasn't done this already. Granted, he'll be the first person to tell you that he certainly isn't perfect but he'll also let you know that if he can achieve his dreams then so can you.

    Listening to audiobook.

This book is a group of stories that Kevin Smith tells about different parts of his life and what he has learned from these experiences. I've been a huge Kevin Smith fan from the first time that I watched Clerks many years ago. I've continued to watch the majority of his movies, some I liked more than others. I've never attended any of his Q&A sessions and have rarely listened to his podcasts, so this is really my first experience with Kevin Smith besides movies. I will have to say that I'm impressed. I've always known he is smart and funny, but I never would've dreamed at the insight that he has on his life experiences. He has done a lot and met a lot of people and with that, brings some pretty good stories.

Kevin waxes philosophically as he chronicles his journey from Clerks to Red State and even the married state all the while taking note of our more base selves. A few of the nuggets found within the dung that is slung are the following: 1st start with the idea I can do this. 2nd surround yourself with Why Not people. 3rd nobody is allowed to tell me who I am and what I'm worth.

I've been a fan of Kevin Smith (of Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Red State fame - just to name a few) for a long time so when I saw this book I was excited to read it.

First, let me say, if you don't know Kevin Smith be prepared for swearing and some crude humor. If you are offended by that kind of thing don't read this book. But then, if you're offended by that kind of thing you're probably not a big fan of Kevin Smith to begin with.

There's also quite a bit of information about the movie biz that I found quite intriguing and it was fascinating to hear from the man himself about some of his biggest "flops" (and why they were) as well as about his more popular works.

This book was laugh out loud funny throughout. Kevin is a hilarious guy and the same type of tone that is carried throughout his scripts and podcasts is evident here as well. But within the wrapping of humor are truths that bring a poignancy to the book.

This book was well-written and very entertaining. I would recommend to any fan of Kevin Smith or humor in general.

Utterly charming, and full of very-true-truisms. If you listen to Kev's podcasts or have seen his Q & As, you know these stories already. You've never heard them fully fleshed out, though. The chapter about what we've all come to think of as "The Southwest Incident" is particularly poignant in written form, whereas he tends to play it more for laughs when spoken. If you're someone who avoids Kev's work because of language, I urge you to look further than yur initial, knee-jerk reaction ti what he's trying to say. You might find that somewhat easier in written form. Excellent book. RECOMMENDED.

Love it when he takes a break just to chime in some extra thoughts during the read. touching, funny, and so very entertaining. I especially love how he is continually expressing his devotion to his totally awesome wife, Jen. Honestly, it made me want to be a better spouse and do all I can to make sure that when we hit 14 years, we can rave about each other like he does his wife. and now, I'm going to go youtube me some George Carlin.

Excellent inspirational real relatable I've got about 100 other adjectives I can put in to really say how much I enjoyed this book and I'm not a fan. I enjoy his work but I'm not a fan. this was an amazing journey. It answered a lot of questions for me from rumors that I've heard over the years and I really got a full dose of his experience in it.

I remember watching Kevin Smith’s Clerks and Chasing Amy back in the day – I was big into slacker movies in the 90s. I think those are the only two of Smith’s movies I’ve seen – now I’m more of a romantic comedy kind of girl. Still, I remember the two films fondly; they introduced me to Smith’s humor, and in turn led the way to me listening to this audiobook. Now I know Kevin Smith more as a personality, as well as an annual public speaker at Hall H at Comic-Con. Based on all this I knew I was sure to be entertained and amused with Tough Sh*t.

In Tough Sh*t: Life Advice from a Fat, Lazy Slob Who Did Good, Smith talks about his movie career and his influences from George Carlin to Wayne Gretzky to John Hughes. He dishes on which actors impressed him and which actors pissed him off as he takes you behind the scenes of his movies. Smith also gets the infamous “too fat to fly on Southwest” incident off his chest. Smith acknowledges his family by including a loving recognition of his wife Jen and compares his first date with Jen to Lloyd Dobler asking out Diane Court. Behind it all is some good career advice to get paid doing what you love to do.

Kevin Smith’s story is inspirational – he fell in love with film and followed his dream to be a filmmaker. From his first visit to New York’s Angelika theatre he knew he wanted to follow in the footsteps of Slacker’s Richard Linklater and make films. In fact I learned in this audiobook that Smith made his mark on cinema by creating the bromance film genre. Interesting, right?

The part of me that loves Hollywood gossip ate up Smith’s celebrity stories, from Bruce Willis’ on set bad behavior to his falling out with mentor Harvey Weinstein. Smith also gives a fascinating look at filmmaking when he decides to self distribute his Tarantino-esque film Red State. He also gets some jabs in to the movie critics who love to hate him.

Who better than Kevin Smith to narrate his story? It’s his life and his stories and you can hear the passion and enthusiasm in his voice. His story is very personal, and like his films potty-mouthed at times, and I can’t imagine anyone else narrating the book. Smith is a professional podcaster so is obviously very comfortable behind the mic, and the six hours I listened to this audiobook flew by. His sharp humor, intelligence and knowledge of pop culture made for an entertaining listening experience.

This book is for Kevin Smith fans, those who love movies and pop culture, and those looking for some creative inspiration. If you have six hours to spare and are not easily offended, check out this audiobook.

The Good Stuff You can see the man loves Canada (And mentions us a couple of times and you know us Canadians love that shit - think we have adopted him as one of our own -- and really the guy was on Degrassi a couple of times -- how cool is that) Really knows how to make you laugh your ass off at his expense His obvious love for his wife, child and family is so very beautifully (and often extremely colorfully) written Honestly discusses how lucky he is to have gotten where he is today Down to earth and straight to the point (the man says it like it is) - read the chapter on what happened to him on Southwest airlines and you will see what I mean. So horrible that this sort of thing can happen to ANYONE Quotes John Hughes (last part of book is worth the price of the book alone) His advice is brilliant and actually helpful Not afraid to give his opinion and he never pretends to be something he is not Loved the paragraph on The Tenets of Buellerism Um Hello it is written by Kevin Smith - that is all you need to know people - and quite frankly if you don't have mad respect for this man -- I quit you!The Not So Good Stuff Man if I was his wife I would kill him for his description of their first sexual (and another one) encounter Would have liked some pictures includedFavorite Quotes/Passages"To me, the Angelika Film Center is what Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto or the Forum in Montreal were to Canadian hockey fans of old: a magical structure were the impossible happened every night.""Whenever something got me down, or whenever someone tried to make me feel I was less than someone else (or in the case of one classless piece-of-shit airline, more than someone else), I'd look at at is a reminder that nobody is allowed to tell me who I am and what I'm worth.)"This book is not a blueprint: It's just some funny and bittersweet stuff that happened to me that I feel shaped me into a more well-rounded person - so round, in fact, that a major airline gave me shit about it. But Tough Shit is not the Necronomicon. It will not raise the dead."Who Should/Shouldn't Read So very much NOT FOR the prudish or those easily offended by colourful language (But if you are reading my blog - you OBVIOUSLY are not easily offended) If you are a fan of Kevin Smith than this IS the book for you kids -- this is primo Smith Also thinking this would be an awesome audio book4.75 Dewey'sI purchased this from Indigo -- well because it was written by Kevin Smith people, and I love him (Still ticked at hubby for moving me to Calgary before Fan Expo where I could have meet him!!!) I don't usually read biographies let alone autobiographies, but Kevin Smith is my hero, and so I had to buy his book. It was not a philisophical, how too, self help, or learn by my example type of read, which I was happy to discover. Told in a series of anacdotes, Mr. Smith spins a yarn embodying every geek boy's wet dream. It really was just a collection of happenstances much like a series of short stories, but instead it was all factual.Besides what I learned about Kevin, there was so much more to be had about what surrounded him. The people, and places, and situations that brought about his success. The best part is, this didn't take place in Middle Earth, or Naboo. With this comes an asolute sense of possiblity. Of what can be accomplished in THIS world. Every page is an encouragement to that struggling artist, or hopeful dreamer, that maybe, just maybe, what seemed impossible isn't quite. This book will leave you thinking, if that fat, lazy slob can do it why can't I? Now thats a train of thought I can certainly take comfort in!

Raunchy, unruly, and everything that any Kevin Smith fan could expect. From the story of his latest super-indie film, Red State, to his opinion of Bruce Willis, love for podcasting, the 'too fat to fly' embarrassment, and somewhat disturbing infatuation with his wife; Kevin holds nothing back. There are few biographies that will have you smiling and shaking your head like Tough Sh*t.
