About this audiobook

Dear Listener:

Lindsay Foxe is a successful model in New York, a woman who hides behind a new name to protect herself from a past of betrayal and treachery and a present that becomes fraught with danger. The product of old San Francisco wealth, the daughter of a man who despises her, her life is forever changed when she is brutally assaulted by her sister's husband, and then rejected by her family.

Lindsay is finally forced to face up to her past when she meets S. C. Taylor, a tough ex-cop turned private investigator and computer troubleshooter. He is hired to protect her; but can he both win her trust and discover who is trying to kill her and why? Is it her family? A supposed friend or colleague? A faceless sicko or perhaps a mad psychiatrist? Ah, it's a mystery to savor.

Extremely violent and graphic violence. It's not what I would categorize as a romance of any kind... not what I expect from a Jude Devereux book ... definitely not light reading

I recall reading this when it was first published (1992?). On second reading (or listening) I still think it's worth reading. The story has many strands, and it covers a long timeline. This is more of a study in human psychology, than a suspense - although there is also suspense. I like that while there's also an element of romance, it doesn't overshadow the other aspects of the book, and it never gets mushy.

This is not going to be a good fit for everyone. Some readers simply won't be able to relate to the main female character, Lindsay. She decidedly has a tough and unusual life, and unfortunately, some readers will simply write her off as weak. She can seem that way, no question about it. But she's so much deeper than that. To simply call Lindsay weak and say she needs to get over her unfortunate life and stand up for herself would be a cruel misunderstanding of her psyche. There's a lot more going on here.

Then there's the amazing Taylor, a former NYPD cop, now a private investigator who enters Lindsay's life as a bodyguard. This guy deserves a medal for patience and self-control. He's not perfect, but holy cow, he's fabulous at understanding the bigger picture and not just reacting to a given moment. This guy should be teaching life lessons.

Taylor and Lindsay are both dynamic characters, but they are by no means the most interesting people in this story. No, unfortunately, that title would go, collectively, to Lindsay's family who manages to cover nearly every mental health issue taught in Psych 101: narcissism, sociopaths, psychopaths, etc. These guys are cruel, controlling, bullying, vicious, conniving, lying, cheating, and awful excuses for human beings.

These compelling characters drive a plot full of emotional pitfalls that grips the reader and doesn't let go until all is resolved. Sensitive readers should be aware of potential plot triggers for violent rape.

Not as good as her FBI series. The weak woman lens does not appeal to me.

Can see her skills developing here to what she shows us in her FBI novels, good ending

Realized I had read this before and it was either much better the first time around or I've become a bit more discriminating in my reading style over the past 15-20 years.

Total crap. It read like it was written in the 1970s when romance writers got away with murder in terms of details and authenticity.

How do you move on with your life after a tragic event? How do you recover when your family doesn't support you? Emotionally riveting and deeply intense. This is my first Catherine Coulter book and I was very impressed. With each page, I began to truly appreciate just how much it means to have a family who loves you and supports you.

Quirky and independent, but haunted by a horrifying episode in her past, the model known as Eden isn't thrilled to be assigned a bodyguard. Especially not one as masculine and viral as ex-cop S. C. Taylor. For his part, Taylor's not that struck by his new assignment. Not that is, until her gets to know Eden a bit better.Told in a series of vignettes and flashbacks, the suspense builds as it becomes clear that someone is trying to maim or kill Eden. But who? Suspects range from her seriously dysfunctional family to the mob bosses her manager owes gambling debts to. Or could the villain be someone else entirely? This is vintage Coulter, a bit rough and violent at times, but surprisingly not that dated. And given the recent popularity of top model reality shows, I'd say it has a fairly wide appeal.
