Early days in the Sherlockian Canon as his son, August Lupa, serves as a spy in France during WW1. Characters not very well developed, particularly Lupa. He is more of a caricature than realistic,. Add a confusingly muddled plot and this series is off to an uncertain start.

I love a good mystery but this one did not cut it for me. I don’t know if it was because I had to read this book for work or if it was just the story but I found myself doing anything but reading it. I really didn’t follow where the author was going and felt like the mystery was solved on a whim. Not my cup of tea. 2.5-3?

My first Lescroart book. Son of Holmes has a very relaxed feel in reading. Even scenes of tension did not seem overly dramatized, felt comfortable. Comfortable as in easy and pleasurable to read. When the characters were having a meal or a drink it made me want to run to the kitchen to share in the moment. The tension was evident, not forced. The plot moved convincingly.

This has to be the poorest effort for a Holmes pastiche that it has ever been my misfortune to come across. (and that is really saying something) Only here at all because a. It was cheap and b. because I cannot refuse anything with Holmes associations. But I kid you not,it was a close run thing.

Sherlock Holmes connection is made. Prologue is boring. Then book becomes okay. Illegitimate son of Sherlock Holmes. Worst feeling cover ever! Hate the sensation of touching it.
